    3. Hi Lawrence My Garland family were in Mangotsfield from the late 18th century. I am trying to find out whether they were there before that or how they are linked to the other Garland families in and around Bristol. So far without success. At the moment I don't have any link to a William - Clarissa marriage although I think there may have been a possible link between my family and Winterbourne. Grateful for any Garland information. Best wishes Leonard -----Original Message----- From: bristol_and_district-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:bristol_and_district-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of LawrenceLowe Sent: 19 February 2010 11:00 To: bristol_and_district@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [B&D] GARLAND Hi Leonard, I see you are interested in the Garland family. 3. Hello Kathleen, Thank you for your kind offer! Is there anyone with the surname ODY in the book? The earliest ODY I have traced is John ODY born about 1765 in Mangotsfield so it would be interesting to know if the family was there 70 years earlier. 1. [B&D] FamilySearch Indexing: Bristol Parish Registers Project
    2. Kathleen Craine
    3. Some of you may be familiar with the FamilySearch Labs Pilot Project (http://labs.familysearch.org/). This is a massive project by the LDS Church to index all of their films and make the images available online. Volunteers do the data entry from images of the films, and later these images will be made available for searching on the FamilySearch Labs Record Search site. Software is downloaded to your computer to access the images. You then choose which project(s) you wish to work on and download up to 5 "batches" to complete. One of the current projects is the Bristol Parish Registers 1837-1900. I have found this indexing project to be simple, and each batch has 8-10 records per download, making it easy to complete. I've also found that the title is misleading, as I have done records for the 1820s, as well as later records. If you are interested in finding out more about this project and volunteering, see the FamilySearching Indexing website at: http://indexing.familysearch.org/newuser/nuhome.jsf Kathleen Craine Chicago

    3. Roy.Ive got some LEMON's in my Bristol Lot. My Great,Grandmother's-Brother in law was Charles Egbert Lemon JENNINGS who when he was Enumerated in the 1851 census when he was aged just a Nipper at 2 years of age,had a LEMON Living with him. And on the Occupation of this Female LEMON it had:- "Said to be a Drunkard!" Charles JENNINGS Ran a Timber Yard at 487a Gloucester Road Bristol. I am given to understand that Descendants of his Still Run that Business Today,or did up to quite recently? But they Were in the Paint/Wallpaper Trade now or then? Talking of HEAVEN? There's a House around the corner from me Named "EVANS Above!" But I do not know if they are refering to a Family of EVANS Living Upstairs, Or they are just a religious Bunch? My Bristol Family of The WHITE's Married in to some GREEN's,and also some BLACK's over on this side of the Bristol Channel. Also a BROWN Connection buried amongst another Branch. I also have some WHITE's who married in to the WHITEHOUSE Gang in Cardiff. In my Somerset Gang,Ive got "NORTH" which over a period of 300 years turn in to "WEST". I made up a family Tree of them all,and Called it:- "NORTH by NORTH-WEST!" Obviously after that Splendid 1959 Film by Alfred HITCHCOCK. Cheers Graham. -- Graham Williams.of Canton,Cardiff. 1. [B&D] BRINDAL and Variants
    2. Jill Forster
    3. Hello Di My family too was adamant about the spelling of their name!! In every generation however there was a change right back to the 1600s. In the early 1700s I had 7 children in one family baptised and every one had their name spelled differently in the register. This didn't resolve fully until the late 1800s when many more people were literate and made the decision on spelling based on family lore & custom. I have Grenville, Greenville, Greinville, Granville, Grenfell in my mum's family. I ignored a Leng in the right area in Durham for years - to my peril. They were Laings I thought and the local dialect would make that sound like Leng to the clerk! My husband even went to primary school as Foster and when he was to go to high school in England his dad said he had better put an r in it as he had found it on his father's birth cert! The clerks just wrote down what they heard so while your dad may have been adamant about the spelling of his name, the further you go in family history the less sure you will be. My ancestor too was a school master but not until the mid 1800s when they were all trained and certified through National Examinations and most training schools were Anglican in England and Presbyterian in Scotland. Before that there were only very limited educational qualifications for teachers. The churches often ran Sunday Schools and the military had some organised education for children. There are some good small books on the subject - one by Colin Chapman, "The Growth of British Education and Its Records" ISBN 1 873686 05 6. It should be available in genealogy libraries in Perth. Hi Jim, I thought that was them, John & Mary BRINDLE, because my great great grandfather was a Samuel, but seeing this Samuel died when he was 15, it couldn't be, but then you never know my great great grandfather could have been named after this Samuel. It has given me a few things to think about! Lots more research to be done! Thank you so much for all your help, I love this list! :) Cheers Di Haywood Fremantle Western Australia.
