I have the books, not Bernard's CDs :)) I do have a number of his CDs though, which are currently buried due to work being done on the house at the moment. I'll have to see if I can find book versions of Stoate's work and the exemption certs. Bernard's CDs are very reasonable and an excellent resource (Invoice is in the email - again! <VBG>) Look ups from CDs are the bane of the producers lives. They aren't allowed, as you say, but it still happens. It applies to the majority of websites as well. > And yes, there are SAGEs in the 'exemption' sections! 3. Many thanks for looking at the SAGEs, Charani. Your message reminded me that I have Bernard Welchman's CD which includes the Hearth Tax returns, the Hearth Tax exemption certificates, and Stoate's completion of the exemptions and index. And yes, there are SAGEs in the 'exemption' sections! We obviously were no better off in those days, than I feel now. Very glad to hear your daughter is OK after her misadventure. I would be interested to know where the BALCHs in your book were living as I haven't been able to find any other than Mary BALCH in the parish register there, so they likely came from elsewhere, >From Jenny http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~becher/index.htm >> Mr BALCH of Stanton Drew > > See above re: Stanton Drew. 3. Thank you Charani. Will have to check them. I am curious to know - what is the maximum number of hearths anyone had? The Hearth Tax ceased in 1689. It seems the Window Tax started in 1696 so how did they get money from the population between 1689 and 1696? I suppose these taxes were like our Council Tax!
