Thank you Jeremy. It certainly sounds possible. I would need several older children if William and Ann married in 1797 as Hannah wasn't born for another 25 years....just about possible if she was the youngest. I had just browsed the 1841 and 1851 censuses to see which GALLOPs were born in Chew Stoke and apart from William and Maria there were no others around in 1841 who would be old enough to be Hannah's parents. There are always more important closer relatives to look for when I get the occasional visit to the Record Office. GALLOP is certainly a Lakes name. Hi Liz, Those names looked familiar but I have none of them in my tree. I think they look familiar as you may have asked of them before. I don't have any Hannah as daughter of William and Maria... Hi Kathleen, Again sorry for bringing this post back from the dead... Hi Charani, Sorry to bring this post back to haunt you, but could you kindly check if there are any GALLOPs listed. Also TRENT if you have time. Volume one is the extant Hearth Tax records for Somerset for 1664-65 and is indexed by place and name. It makes for interesting, and slightly amusing, reading. It's not as good as a census but does give a good indication of who was where and how many hearths they had. It doesn't just name men. There are plenty of women listed too. There are a number of entries that state a resident had declared one or even two hearths less than they had and one chap declared two MORE than he had. There are also a number of entries annotated with "one hearth dug up" or "one hearth stopped up". Finding ways not to pay tax was as alive and well in the 17th century as it is today <G> Volume two contains "the names of all persons paying taxes or exempted from payment". There's a note that some hundreds are missing as well as parishes and tythings. The bulk of the volume deals with exemptions for 1670 and 1674. This volume is not indexed. Both volumes are arranged by hundred. Hi All, I've taken a break from my family research for a while, (waiting for 2011 to become more "freely" available). I'm still receiving emails from the list and trying to keep up with reading them all. Next week however I will be visiting Chew Stoke area for two days. Mainly just for a few days away from London, but I want to visit the church in Chew Stoke, some streets where I know my families lived and then also be a tourist and visit Cheddar Gorge, Wells cathedral, Glastonbury Tor to name a few things. I know this is quite vague and slightly off topic, but I'm looking for any other tips and tricks of places to see (maybe with historical value.. things my families would have seen in their day) I've been to Bristol so rather just sights in the country? I would love to go to the archives and do some work.. but do not think I'll have the time. Plus need to do lots of homework before a trip like that. Thanks in advance. Regards Jeremy

Some while ago sks was good enough to look up Sarah Mortimer's date and place of baptism for me. In changing over my laptop I seem to have lost some information and these details are amongst the casualties. From memory her baptism took place abt 1833/34 at a chapel in Bristol. Hi Dale I would be happy to share my Beese/Bees family information with you. Beese Descendent Chart sent off list. Leonard
Oh my goodness, that is such sad news. Thank you, Charani, for letting us know. Lee was my first cousin - our grandmothers were sisters - hers being the 4th of 12 siblings, and mine the last. I found the family connection with Lee almost as soon as I started looking into my family history, through her wonderful posts here (thank goodness for the Rootsweb search facility). She had done so much research into the various branches of her family tree that she already had me on it! So, when I contacted her, it was perhaps not as great a surprise for her as it was for me to discover I had a cousin on the other side of the world... I am so pleased now that we met in person soon after that, at the 2008 Bunfight, and I took her back to her hotel after the lunch so we were able to have a long chat, as if we'd known each other for years. We kept in regular touch since then, and I was a little concerned when I didn't hear anything from her after the end of October last year, until January when she explained that she'd been in hospital for 6 weeks and had several operations to remove a tumour, but those seemed to have been successful and she sounded very cheery. My last email from her was exactly a month ago and she didn't mention any recurrence, so this news is somewhat unexpected. I had only known Lee a short while but she was a really lovely person and will be sadly missed. It was a privilege to meet her at the Stanton Wick bunfight (and the late Hugh Watkins too). Please pass on my condolences to her family. Bernice
