    3. The Canadians held a wonderful bunfight for me when I went over there 3 years ago. Twenty of us met for a fantastic day in a lovely restaurant in Merrickville. I'm coming to Australia straight after the Bunfight in Clevedon and will be going from the West Coast to the East Coast and various stops in-between. Staying with distant cousins - some have visited me in the past - and some friends who I've been emailing for the last 10 years and helping with their UK research. It is always great to put faces to names and share research. I've invested in a Computer Notebook as I went to the US last year as I was invited by the National Women's Hall of Fame for the induction of the daughter of one of my Somerset ancestors - I realised then that laptops were getting too heavy for me! Various Rootsweb lists hold Bunfights and they are very well worth attending as Charani said. We try to organise Bunfights early so that members can start planning holidays or research trips around the function. There is no charge made for the bunfight - you just pay for your lunch. We start around 11am and usually start splitting up around 4pm when groups have been known to go chasing their ancestors in cemeteries or looking for the streets where they lived Liz www.btinternet.com/~e.newbery OPC for Street, Somerset

A bunfight is a get together of like-minded people to discuss, in our case, family history and genealogy, work together on subjects of interest and/or problems before, during and after a very enjoyable lunch. Buns are not thrown though! <BG> Alternative names are meet, gathering, get together. It's a great deal of fun and a lot of useful work gets done too. It's also good to meet some of the people who you've "talked" to on the list, put faces to names. Maybe you'll be able to join us too at some time. Year before last Lee joined us from Australia and Nancy from Canada. Last year Bob joined us from Germany. There may have been others as well in the past. I hope we'll see more list members from overseas as well. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk

    3. Hi Jeff You ought to come to one of our bunfights one day. It's always worth making the trek...I go from Penzance all the day to Derbyshire for similar functions. I haven't been to the Salt House for over 50 years. I used to be a pupil at St Brandon's and we walked passed the Salt House every week to St Andrews Church on the hill. I know nothing about the photographs yet - age, people etc but I've no doubt someone in the group will try taking photographs of the photographs and let people know afterwards. I wont be me as I will be en route to Australia and wont be back until December though I will probably remain on the list in case there is something that needs attention while I'm in Australia. Someone on the list might have an old telephone directory or an old Trade Directory of Clevedon so it's always worth asking on the list...someone just might know your relatives who ran the Salt House in those days. 3. Posted with the kind permission of the Listowner. You are cordially invited to visit www.familynotices.org, a totally non-commercial & privately-owned site. Following the death of a close family member, I was surprised at the charges levied by the local newspaper for posting just a small obituary. The same applies to birth, engagement, marriages notices et al. It made me think through the whole 'public notices' thing and I created FamilyNotices.org which is an on-line repository for all such, with no fees or charges to view, search or post. Unlike a newspaper this has the advantage of being world-wide, free and doesn't get thrown away! Please feel free to help yourself and post anything which is relevant and appropriate - and it doesn't have to be current. Details of 'Auntie Millie born in 1896' is just as relevant as a modern-day wedding notice. If you like it, please tell your friends, for anyone is welcome to post good news or sad news. .........& if you don't, just tell me! 3. Hello, My name is Kevin and I am from Minnesota , USA I am trying to find the baptism of Jane Tremlett who married Samuel Hissett in 1803 at Shebbear , Devon. In both the 1851 and 1861 census it says she was from Bristol. Her age varies somewhat but it appears she was born between about 1777 and 1781. I Have looked at several films of church records from churches in the Bristol area but have failed to find her. The only references I have found to the name are: 1)marriage of William Trimblett to Mary Gibbs on 7 April 1765 at St Philip and Jacob Church 2)Hannah baptised 27 Dec 1768 dau of William and Mary Trimlett at St Mary Redcliffe 3)William baptised 3 Feb 1772 son of William and Mary Trimley at St Mary Redcliffe Any help would be most appreciated! 3. Hello everyone...I hope you've all had a good Easter break and are now getting back to research. While trying to find another interesting location for a bunfight, I decided to try the Salt House at Clevedon. This is an ideal location with masses of car park...I should know, I was at school only yards away! As I'm hoping to go to Australia in October, the weekend that best suits me for a Bunfight is 2nd October. October can be beautiful weather, an Indian Summer, the kids are back at school, students are at Uni so it should be lovely and peaceful. The restaurant/pub are very happy to accommodate us, they have free WiFi for us and I'm assured that mobile phones (if necessary) or dongles will work indoors. I was a little concerned about that as they are so close to the coast. They have also told me that they have a large collection of historic photos adorning their walls and they have had members of the public recognising relations on the photos. Please let me know if there is any interest for this particular weekend so that I can go ahead and plan. If you would prefer a different date please let me know - I can't attend if it's any earlier but that doesn't mean it can't be organised. We've had Bunfights at the Warwick in Clutton, Hunters Rest very close to Clutton, Carpenters Arms at Stanton Wick and The George at Abbots Leigh. I think it's good to find different locations so that you can all experience other areas where your ancestors lived. I know there are people on the list with family from Clevedon and also from the Gordanos. My 2xg grandfather built an organ for Christ Church in Clevedon. I'd be happy to take you on conducted tours around Clevedon afterwards if anyone is interested. There are also plenty of hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs in the town. Best wishes to you all. 2. Mike Gould
    3. Hi Ian, > How do you cope (if you do) with the multiple spellings > of a single name typical of old records? I agree that we should transcribe the names as written, so that does mean manual correction of the voice recognition output. It's still quicker than typing the whole thing, at least at the speed I can type ! In principle, if there are only 2 or 3 variations, it should be possible to speak them differently and train the software to distinguish how you say them, but I haven't tried that yet. > My current practice is to begin a list of names, kept > alphabetical and added to as needed. Then as I work down > a page, I append that page number ... Using MS Word, that final list of names of yours would be saved as a file and used to tell Word how to index the transcription. All you have to do is make sure that you put a page break in the transcription when you go to a new page in the original document. I'm still trying to evolve good techniques for transcribing old documents, so I'll be interested to hear how you get on and what tips you pick up as you go. Best wishes, Mike
