    3. This is a quick dip in the pond with a fishing rod! Has anyone got FISCHER ancestry in the 1700s? I don't have a specific person, just scrawled notes on a roughly drawn family tree mentioning that the next generation back was a FISCHER. Since Ive been stuck on this generation for years, I started to wonder if it might be worth a stab further back. I did find some FISSCHERs in the Bristol Calendar of Wills in 1400s so they were about, but haven't quite got that far back yet!!!!! LOL It looks to be a German variant, does anyone know if this perhaps was the accepted spelling much earlier? Amanda Kerby Christhcurch

    3. Hi Amanda: This is probably not relevant to your quest but I have 5 generations of Fishers (sometimes written Fysher) Many of my ancestors hailed from the Bristol area but the only birthplace designation I have for the Fishers is "England" Emlyne Fisher c1666 m. John Eastmond of West Antsey, Devon Emlyne's father was John Fisher c1639 m. Emlin Edward Fisher c1620 Edward Fysher c1596 John Fysher c1575 The above summary is all I know. It is a forlorn hope but if you see a connection please let me know. Thank you. 3. Hi Amanda, I would conjecture from the contents of his Will that Thomas VOISEY was a "Privateer" which was a legal profession at the time his Will was written. He is bequeathing "all my prize money" (not proze money) which is the payment a Privateer would be entitled to. It was his share of the profits of intercepting ships of foreign nations at war with England, and selling the goods and often the ship. If he was in my family, I'd consider him a very interesting man, with an occupation which is often equated with that of a Pirate, but Privateering was legal. He was probably at sea more often than at home, hence his description of a "transitory life". Had he lived long enough, he would have been involved in the American Revolution in 1776 capturing the US ships for which the English Privateers were amply rewarded by George II. But I assume he died in 1763. I wonder if he died a rich man and Elizabeth CLARK and her husband became wealthy? Finding the inventory that went with his Probate would be my first objective. 3. Hi Ian Delighted to have you join us. Yes, October might be a long way away but I will, hopefully, be very busy twix now and then as I need to earn some mega bucks for my trip to Australia. Which reminds me...if any of you are in Cornwall over the summer, you are welcome to call in. We hold a family history morning every Tuesday from 11am. It costs you nothing and you even get a cup of tea or coffee. Just let me know in advance - I do have a business to run so need to be organised. We have access to so much stuff here and we are always happy to share. Ancestry, Findmypast, National Burial Index Version 3, 2003 Electoral Register, Somerset & Dorset FHS magazines ie The Greenwood Tree, Cornwall Family History Society magazines, Cumberland FHS magazines, various other magazines, numerous CDs...enough to keep you occupied for hours. Just please don't ask me for look ups as life is hectic enough. Sorry about that. 3. Hi Peter That is great. I am sure planes will be flying by October...I will be flying to Australia a couple of days later so I too hope the present problems will be over and done with. Don't worry about missing me when I was in the US. My trip was so very hectic. Which reminds me - I will bring the Medal and other memorabilia that I brought back from the National Women's Hall of Fame and tell everyone about it if they are interested. Of course, there are many other women whose families have settled in the US and who deserve the accolade I obtained for my ancestor, Rebecca Talbot Perkins. For those of you who don't know about Rebecca, her father (Joseph TALBOT) emigrated from Somerset in 1855, he died in 1890 from an attack of influenza which developed into pneumonia. Rebecca was his eldest daughter and she took over running his real estate business and became one of the first women to be Licenced to run a Real Estate Agency. She met the Pankhursts when they visited the US, she was a suffragette, she supported women's rights, she was what they call a "Club Woman", i.e. she did a lot of charitable work and was president of several women's hospitals and refuges. In 1921 she was asked to find a home for an "out of wedlock" child. As a result she started an adoption agency before adoption became a legal requirement. The adoption agency was non-religious, non-sectarian but every family had to go through strict interviews to ensure the child they were having would be happy and well cared for. Eventually the agency closed down in 2002 but not before they handed over some of their archives to me. Rebecca married Agar Luglow PERKINS who had been recommended to come from Canada to work for her in 1895 and she died childless in 1956. She had two sisters and only one niece who she put through law school, she was Reba Talbot SWAIN - the first female Deputy Attorney General for NY State - she sadly died in 1930 from cancer and so the line died out. There are only 260 women inducted into the NWHF so I feel highly honoured that Rebecca's name will live on. It was through one of the Rootsweb sites that I heard about the NWHF and decided to put Rebecca forward but I certainly didn't expect it would leave to an extensive journey and such a welcome from everyone I met. ROFL Of all the local attractions there are to visit only this one could be of interest to family historians and genealogists :D Reminds me of an echo from the past: whenever we went passed a village cricket match whilst on a day out somewhere in the car when I was a child, my sisters and I would sing out "drop mummy there, drop mummy there". Now when we're in the car and we pass a cemetery, my dau sings out, "drop mum there" or asks if we might have anyone buried there. There's a growl from behind the wheel "we are not stopping". My husband really can't understand the interest (or pleasure) in wandering through a cemetery or churchyard <VBG> At least my father shared my mother's interest in cricket <G> -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk

    3. What a frustrating time for you! The Cottage Homes at Downend were indeed set up to provide accommodation for children who would otherwise have been in a Workhouse (in this case 100 Fishponds Road - the Eastville Workhouse). It is entirely possible for one (or both) of their parents to still be alive but for a number of reasons unable to cope with their children. >From A2A you can see that Bristol Record Office does hold a Register of births and deaths at the Eastville Workhouse - so you might find the parents in that (the death register) [no title] BCC/D/SS/2 1898-1943 These documents are held at Bristol Record Office Former reference: 30105/2 1 vol Contents: Register of births and deaths: 5 April 1898-6 Oct. 1943 3 April 1898-22 Jan. 1907 Registers of deaths BCC/D/SS/3 [n.d.] These documents are held at Bristol Record Office Former reference: 30105/3 [no title] BCC/D/SS/3/4 4 Jan. 1889 - 15 June 1898; 1898 - 1907 [no title] BCC/D/SS/3/5 23 Jan. 1907 - 30 July 1914 [no title] BCC/D/SS/3/6 5 Jan. 1924 - 30 Sept. 1928 [no title] BCC/D/SS/3/7 2 Oct. 1928 - 10 Jan. 1933 [no title] BCC/D/SS/3/8 10 Jan. 1933 - 24 Jan. 1937 [no title] BCC/D/SS/3/9 24 Jan. 1937 - 29 Dec. 1939 [no title] BCC/D/SS/4 6 Feb. 1907 - 6 Aug. 1931 These documents are held at Bristol Record Office Former reference: 30105/4 1 vol. I see that there is a family tree on Ancestry which has actual birth dates and places of birth for Frank, Mabel & George Bertie - it looks as if the owner might have seen certificates for these. The eldest son William does not have an actual birth date nor is there an address for his place of birth. It might be worth contacting the owner of that tree. 3. Hi Hilary Thanks for your thoughts, but I think that in this case it probably stands for Sodbury Registration District as this was the basis that the Enumeration was organised on, and not on the basis of the council districts - which is what Rural and Urban Districts would have referred to at that point. But it does illustrate the fact that they should give some guidance as to what it does mean - also as Adrian said it would be nice to have some indication if there were other people at the address whose details they cannot divulge because they do not know them to be dead. I found it most frustrating that I was asked to complete a survey and the only answers were already given, none of which were really apposite in this case, and there was no-where one could add comments or suggestions. Kind regards Polly
