I agree they were purely for statistical purposes, nevertheless, it's good that we can see them although lumping various occupations under a group heading is not especially helpful. Whilst they have a limited use as far as occupations go, the info on family groups, esp in the 1911, is helpful. BTW, you aren't suggesting family historians are obsessive, are you? ;)) -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk

    3. Hi Mike, Thanks for posting the information. I see on the website that "Articles from the service have been harvested and are available from the Google News Archive Search". I hadn't come across that in Google, despite being a keen user of Google Maps, Books and others. It offers another way to search the newspapers, and the timeline facility is especially good. The link is: http://news.google.com/archivesearch I hope other newspapers will be made available in this service - it could become an extremely valuable resource for family historians. Best wishes, Mike Gould Leicestershire -----Original Message----- From: bristol_and_district-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:bristol_and_district-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mike Powter Sent: 02 May 2010 00:24 To: BRISTOL_AND_DISTRICT@rootsweb.com; BRITISH-MARINERS@rootsweb.com; ENG-LIVERPOOL@rootsweb.com Subject: [B&D] News from downunder Hello friends, I don't know if this is news, or is of interest, but Australian newspapers are being digitised and made available for searching. 3. Hi Charani Yes - it was a useful bit of publicity for this weekend's celebrations of the completion of the restoration project at the cemetery. If anyone lives locally, today would be a good day to visit and enjoy the events taking place - including tours and singing in the Anglican chapel this afternoon (details on www.arnosvale.org.uk) ... or on Sunday afternoon when there a service with more singing. I am ambivalent about the new increased charges which have been announced for record searches, although I understand the need for the Trust to raise money to support the cemetery. If any 'lister' decides to pay up for a search and gets a positive result, I would be very happy to volunteer to help them locate the grave - or even find it myself, photograph it and email the result - just email me the plot number, names and known dates off list.
