    1. Re: [B&D] Searching MARTIN with Canadian Connections
    2. Hello Evelyn Don't know if you are aware the MARTIN family are farmers at Almondsbury, Gloucestershire which is just north of the city of Bristol in the 1881 census. Your Robert Osborne Martin (23) and wife Eulalie (24) nee Robertson are living with Eulalie's 10 year old younger sister next door to Robert's parents at Rookery Farm, Almondsbury. Robert is a farmer of 25 acres and his father is a farmer of 80 acres. Robert's younger brother John Osborne Martin (21) a farmer's son is still at home with his father John (46) and wife Mary Martin (44). She was born in Kegworth, Leicestershire. Both Robert and his father John Martin were born at Chew Magna in the county of Somerset which is just south of the city of Bristol. Robert Martin married Eulalie Robertson in the June quarter of 1879 in the Barton Regis registration district of Bristol. There is a Frederick Martin born in the March quarter of 1885 and a Charles Martin born in the December quarter of 1886 both in the Barton Regis registration district. I am sorry but I don't know anything about the family in 1911 or when they emigrated to Canada from South Wales. Hope this helps. Bernice in Bristol

    1. [B&D] Birth certificate for a surrogate child
    2. liverpud
    3. Wikipedia: Surrogacy is an arrangement whereby a woman agrees to become pregnant and deliver a child for a contracted party. She may be the child's genetic mother (the more traditional form of surrogacy), or she may, as a gestational carrier, carry the pregnancy to delivery after having been implanted with an embryo, the latter being an illegal medical procedure in some jurisdictions. Quite a topic, must depend on the jurisdiction..... 3. Hi all: Robert Osborne MARTIN b. 1858, somerset married Eulalie Mary ROBERTSON b. 1852, Bristol. They had 7 children that I know of. Two of the sons were Fred MARTIN b. 1885 and Charles MARTIN b. 1886. Both were born in Gloucester Co. I have a Charles MARTIN and Fred MARTIN in New Brunswick, Canada. So far I haven't found anything in Immigration records and wondering if anyone can connect this family who lived in Cardiff in 1911 with the sons in Canada about 1920. 2. Charani
    3. We're all well aware there's going to be a big gap from now until the 1921 census is released in 2022 and an even bigger one until the 1951 census is released in 2052. In the interim, due to the efforts of Guy Etchells, we have the next best thing to a census: the 1939 National Registration, albeit at a price. However, I discovered yesterday (via the Lost Cousins newsletter, http://lostcousins.com/newsletters/latemay10news.htm), there was a survey of 10% of women who were or had been married carried out in 1946. The information is limited, only asking for marital status, DoB, date of marriage and, if applicable, the date the marriage ended, DOBs of every live birth, the number of children under the age of 16 and the husband's occupation. The children's names aren't given but it should be possible to identify them from their DoBs. This survey is in the National Archives under reference RG67 but is subject to a 75 year closure. <www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=12236&CATLN=3&Highlight=&FullDetails=True> Did anyone know about this survey? Has anyone actually seen or used it? And, if so, was it useful if a sought entry was found? -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk

    3. Hi Janet It happens even today. I dread seeing the antique programmes where someone is selling the family heirlooms with the comment, "none of my children are interested" - that might be at that time but in a few more years they would very probably be interested by which time it's all gone and, for what, under £100 for a mug with names and dates on, a piece of jewellery which is "out of fashion" and will probably come back into fashion in 10 years time. My gran met my grandfather up on The Downs in Bristol. She was already engaged but this man came up behind her and pinched her bottom and that's why I'm here!! I often wondered about the man she was engaged to who gave her a beautiful gold cross with ruby in and a chain. Fortunately I have it today and I treasure it. It's been round the world with me and rarely gets worn but I would not be without it. I also have a small photo frame - smaller than a farthing - with a photo of King Edward VII on the front and his wife Queen Alexandra on the back which I also have from my gran - it was always in her button box. What is even nicer is that I have a photo of my 2xg grandmother with a large gold chain around her neck with this photo frame attached, it's in a fine gold circle with a loop at the top to hang it by. I often wonder whether this was a Coronation presentation. I've never seen another like it. Do other members of B&D make a note of all the samplers we see on those programmes and then decide to trace the families? I just can't resist tracing them. There is a lady in the US who always buys up bibles when she sees them in the hope of returning them to their rightful families or at least putting the information on the internet. I've been fortunate to find one that she had and received all the very useful information. 3. Hello Charani, I think we should take some consolation that they do not (yet) require a man with a red flag to walk in front! In many parts of London roads around schools have a 20 mph speed limit (around school start and end times). I understand it has reduced the number of child-related accidents quite considerably. Plus, during the rush hours one cannot get up to 20 mph in many parts of the country. Even the M25 orbital motorway (or car park!) grinds to a halt in many parts despite having been widened to 4 or 5 lanes each way in many parts.. An expansion perhaps of Parkinson's Law that road usage expands to fill any new lanes built? Phil Orpington (within 4 miles of Junction 4 of M25!)

    3. Dear Listers Is anyone visiting Canford Cemetery & might be able to take a digital photo for me please? Explanation:- I visited the cemetery after visiting Arnos Vale on their 'open day', but arrived at Canford after closing time!! As it was a bank holiday it closed earlier than the normal Monday 7pm time - yes- I should have known better! Even though I have the grave location it would have been helpful to have direction to the location as it was not clear to me. I searched in the area I thought was relevant. I have a 1934 photo of the grave & inscription but I wondered if anyone else was added to the inscription as I cannot find the partner. Details:- In Loving Memory of  MY DEAR HUSBAND  HENRY W. J. MORGAN who passed away Nov 9th( i think) 1934 AGED 68 YEARS 'Till death do us part' Wondering if Henry's wife is buried with him & added to the inscription. The grave location is 151 (Pink ? I think this must be the colour of the paper work in the office) CC. Many thanks to anyone who might be able to help Best wishes Pat

    3. If this is "central" Bristol then I have to agree with them. In fact you can't really go faster than 20mph these days because there is just so much traffic. The suburbs are a different matter. When our ancestors first had cars I doubt they would have gone much faster than that and there weren't many people around...the roads just weren't made for cars and comfort in those days. Perhaps we could go back to Rickshaws (like NY) provided they were only around the central area and not going up and down the 7 hills of Bristol. I certainly found traffic was so slow when I was there in December and I think I could have walked faster. So, going back to Mid-Victorian times - how would our ancestors have got around Bristol? I imagine they just shopped within a short distance of their homes. My family lived in and around Bedminster/Totterdown at least from 1877. Prior to that my great grandfather boarded in Horfield - he moved in from Street, Somerset presumably for an apprenticeship as a Print Compositor. At some time between 1901 and 1911 they bought a house at 21 Longfield Road and the extended family lived there until 1972. I imagine that as he had lived in the area in 1877 he already knew the area so that's why he moved back there. Can anyone tell me when the area around Horfield was built? Their house was near Gloucestershire County Cricket ground and my great aunt always went to see the games. The houses are typical Victorian terraced homes with small front "areas" and back gardens. Right up to the death of my great aunt nothing in the house ever changed - there was always the aspidistra in a huge green put, the beautiful musical box which my great aunt sadly sold to a man who came knocking. That really upset me as I had told her I was happy to buy it off her, it was a really beautiful one with at least 10 tunes and in immaculate condition. A lovely little Davenport with a secret drawer that held all the family documents - births, marriage, death certificates, Wills and her father's bible with all the names and dates of birth and death in. What happened to all that? She wasn't married and everything went to her niece who was known for throwing everything out. 3. Have just been in Somerset, researching COOK mainly in Clutton. Happened to stop for a while in Radstock, and found their excellent museum. What a find, anybody with connections in that area a visit there is a must, especially if you have mining ancestors. The staff we very helpful, producing some copies of previous editions of their in house Magazine 'Five Archves'  We purchased three back editions, which included wonderful articles detailing the lives of some of my husbands ancestors. They have a well stocked bookshop for Somerset and local books, a little tea shop with homemade cake. Whilst there we were told about a fantastic website they have been involved in establishing, 'Somerset Coalfield Connections' It features families based in or connected to the parish of Midsomer Norton and the surround parish of North Somerset, which lie in the main on the Somerset Coalfield. Information obtained in the main from Parish or Census Records. Other contributors are quoted as sources. Not sure if this is the offical way into the site, but this is the one I used. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SRCH&db=pjc4axsurname=A or you can Google rootsweb Somerset Coalfield Connections. I have just spent a wonderful evening looking at this site, once you have found an ancestor, do click on the headings - Index, Individual, Descendancy, Pedigree, Abnentafe, and you can also download a GEDCOM. The information they have on individuals and families is incredible. Their index has 66856 entries. You may have already found or heard of this site, if not, please have a look, some of the information extends into Bristol. Pat in Grimsby, Lincs
