Hi Mike, The Tichborne story was well-covered at the time in the Wagga Wagga newspapers, and gets a rerun every now and then. If you write to the Local Studies Officer at the Wagga Library, you may be lucky - alternatively, try the Wagga FHS. http://www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/www/html/391-collection-highlights.asp http://www.waggafamilyhistory.org.au/ I would have helped you a couple of years ago when we were still living in Wagga.......... Yvonne Scrivener Canberra ACT Australia -----Original Message----- From: bristol_and_district-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:bristol_and_district-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mike Powter Teresa was an illiterate girl by all accounts and one of four children. Her sister Mary Ann Bryant was born in 1844 in Goulburn, NSW. In 1864 Mary Ann and her family move to Wagga Wagga and on January 29th, 1865 Mary Ann Bryant marries Thomas Castro (aka Arthur Orton) in Wagga Wagga, NSW. Thomas / Arthur In August there are advertisements in local papers about the missing heir to the Tichborne Baronetcy. The heir, Sir Roger Charles Tichborne had been a passenger on a ship which had been lost at sea. Though most believed the heir had been drowned, his mother believed he had been rescued by a passing ship and was living somewhere incognito. She advertised in newspapers worldwide hoping to find him. In January, 1866 Castro answers one of these advertisements and claims he is Sir Roger Charles Tichborne and that he has been living in Australia as Thomas Castro. To cut a long story short, on September 2nd, 1866 Sir Roger (or Tom Castro) with his wife leave Sydney on the Rakaia bound for London. They meet Lady Tichborne who says that he is her long lost son - the rest is history. Needless to say Frederick Ewen led an exemplary life as a Trooper, Constable and retiring as an Inspector of the NSW Police Force. I am sure he wouldn't have put up with any hanky panky from his sister-in-law.

Charani. Many thanks for the information on Box Tunnel. Many was the time I had gone through that 4444 yard long Tunnel when I worked for British Railways,Between the years 1962 and 1981. Once when we worked a train of "Bricks"From Swindon to Bristol, about 35 years ago,We "Ran-Away"with the Train coming out at the Bath End of the Tunnel,Due to the Weight of our Train,With the Brakes full on the whole length of the Train,The Wheels all white hot, glowing like "Catherine Wheels"in the Pitch Darkness,We Shot through Bath Spa Station doing about 50 m.p.h; Only when we got on to the Flat Part of the Tracks did we slow down! We found out Much later,That our Little Diesel Locomotive was grossly Overweight! Still,I am now here to tell the Tale. "Box Tunnel"A Marvelous bit of Engineering. The whole railway Line from Bristol to London known as "Brunel's Railway". Known to me at that time as "Graham WILLIAMS's Railway".Or "G.W.R;" for short. Cheers Graham. -- Graham Williams.of Canton,Cardiff. Chairman,"Canton Historical Society". Glam;FHS;#551.
For those on budgets wanting to track down Bristollian rellies who went to the United States, there is a great sale now at http://footnote.com, but be forewarned you will need to be able to run the most current free version of Adobe Flash, which is available for most but not all systems. http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about Full subscriptions are temporarily available at half the normal price for a whole year, but they do not say when the sale ends from what I could find. This is a really great deal for what one gets if need city directories, naturalization records for areas covered or 1930 census. They have many more databases, but these are the ones I personally find to be most valuable in my research. Their city directory collections are fantastic, relatively full runs from usually the mid 1800's into the early 1920's. But check out what databases they have before you sign up, not all big cities are covered. http://www.footnote.com/documents/_2/ The same is true for naturalization records. They have great coverage, but only for certain states. http://www.footnote.com/documents/_24/ Of course, if you want to see the results in all collections, you can always do a global database search from their home page. They take an asterisk * as a wild card: http://www.footnote.com/ Enjoy!
Archive CD Books (Ireland) have just published The Woman's Book, edited by Florence B JACK and originally published in 1911. The full title of the publication was "The Woman's Book: Contains Everything A Woman Ought to Know". The ACDB blurb goes on to say "Containing more than seven-hundred printed pages this self-help manual for household management was, in its day, at the forefront of advice for women. Although the advice given is now, in the main obsolete and even offensive, books such as this brought into the open many subjects that had been hidden away in Victorian Britain. Appealing to the middle-class woman of a certain means, The Woman's Book, provides details on every aspect of household management, from money, to childcare, illness and entertainment." Further details from: <www.archivecdbooks.ie/acatalog/New_Releases.html?utm_source=Archive+CD+Books+Newsletter&utm_campaign=b02995b9a6-100527_ACDB_Newsletter&utm_medium=email> Amongst the contributors is a Miss FEDDEN who I believe belonged to the FEDDEN family of Bristol. I especially like the observation "[...] although in truth much of what appears in the publication appears to be about how to manage a husband." I am making NO comment on that! This might be a bit of a long bow but..... One enduring mystery in my family tree was anything to do with my Mother's father's mother T(h)ersa Mary Agnes Bryant. She had married in a small country town in New South Wales a boy from Prospect Place, Cotham Brow, Bristol by the name of Frederick Stanley Patterson EWEN [the Patterson was his maternal grandfather William Patterson, builder of the SS Great Britain among other great ships]. A recent chance find on the www solved the mystery and revealed another tale that I was unaware of. Teresa was an illiterate girl by all accounts and one of four children. Dear Listers, If anyone of you also has problems getting the activation emails from rootschat.com, please contact me privately off list instead of giving up. I have been trying to help Caroline and rootschat has never before heard of anyone not getting the activation emails. But they give no way to report such problems until after one gets the emails. We are trying to get them to rectify that problem, but if you also had the same problem, it would help us to get them to do so if we could report other folks who have had the same trouble. If you are reading this post online and do not belong to the list, you can email me via the contact page on my genealogy site. Not posting my email addie here so as to avoid triggering spam. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thecohens/ Thanks!
