Legacy have started doing webinars which, for the uninitiated, are seminars via the web. These seem to be the lasted "in thing" :)) They cover some interesting subjects. Legacy are an American company so there is an American bias to the subjects and they are done American time. For that reason they may not be possible for everyone. I haven't watched any so can't comment on them. If anyone does participate, please let us have a review. There are a couple of previous webinars available via their site but they do require Media Player. http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/webinars.asp -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk http://www.savethegurkhas.co.uk/

Hi Joy, I was sorry to miss the Bunfight again this year. Sounds like you had a great time. With regard to your DANDO/COX problem, I would search at FreeREG to find a sister to Maria of Maria marrying a COX. Alternatively, with the designation 'nephew' being one of those vague ones, it might be the son or daughter of Maria's sister with the surname COX. The only way to find out is to expand the family. Hope this is helpful. Regards, Nancy Frey Newcastle, Ontario, CANADA OPC for Ansford & Castle Cary, Somerset Moderator of Yahoo! Catsash Hundred Group Moderator of Yahoo! It was good to meet everyone at the Bunfight. We thought the meal was excellent, too. Many thanks for arranging it, Liz. It proved a relaxing end to our family history trip, as earlier in the week, the day after we arrived at my 4GGF's Cornish farm, there was a murder in the village! We never dunnit - honest! Our B&B host in Pensford surprised us by saying he knew descendants of my Stanton Drew COX family. By the way, does anyone know which Maria (b about 1808, Pensford), married George DANDO (b about 1801, High Littleton)? Maria, a widow of 83 is staying with her nephew, Edwin William COX,at Box Bush, Stanton Drew, in 1891, and I'd like to find out how the DANDO and COX families are linked. Kind regards Joy
I've had a number of mails purporting to come from members of this list claiming they've been mugged and their embassy and the local police aren't helping them. The mails then go on to request money be sent to them to settle bills. Some of these are now reaching list members as well. If the list member was genuinely in trouble, their embassy would help them. Sadly these mails are FAKE. The alleged senders are NOT in any kind of trouble and are not even away from their own homes. Please do NOT reply to them or send any money which would only end up in a fraudster's pocket. This is a particularly nasty scam that's been resurrected. See: http://www.snopes.com/fraud/distress/family.asp Some of you may recognise the wording in the second example. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk http://www.savethegurkhas.co.uk/

This may be of interest. Of more interest to our list BathBMD is also complete: http://www.bathbmd.org.uk/ -------- Original Message -------- Subject: FFHS-NEWS UKBMD indexes Date: Mon, 4 Oct 2010 21:14:30 +0100 From: News from the Federation of Family History Societies Following my recent emails about indexes on websites such as CheshireBMD and CumbriaBMD (due to go live on 15 October) I have been asked to clarify the difference between the indexes on these websites and the indexes on FreeBMD. The answer is on the home page of the UKBMD.org.uk website: "There are two sets of Birth, Marriage and Death indexes in the UK; the original indexes held by the local register offices and a secondary index created by the General Register Office." FreeBMD.org.uk holds the GRO's indexes and their volunteers are doing a fine job of transcribing the GRO data accurately, but as the GRO indexes are well known for their errors and omissions, then FreeBMD will have these errors and omissions too. The websites such as CheshireBMD.org.uk hold indexes based on the original data held by the local register offices. Although no index could ever claim to be 100% accurate, the local BMD indexes by virtue of being based on the original registers are more complete and with less errors. In the vast majority of cases the marriages are paired fully and also they tell you the venue for the wedding. Where the registrar has allowed it, the birth indexes also contain mother's maiden name for all years, and the death indexes have age at death for all years. The UKBMD website was set up to provide links to all known BMD websites, hence its menu contains "Local BMD" and "GRO BMD" pages to steer you to appropriate BMD websites. When sites such as Cheshire BMD are completed it could be argued that the GRO's flawed indexes are redundant... For example, here's the result of a search for Mary Carr in 1842 in Yorkshire, showing her spouse and also the second marriage on the same register page: From FreeBMD.org.uk Surname First name(s) District Vol Page _____ Marriages Sep 1842 (>99%) _____ CARR Mary Pickering 24 393 TAYLOR Elizabeth Pickering 24 393 WALLS Charles Pickering 24 393 From YorkshireBMD.org.uk Marriage Indexes Surname Forename(s) Spouse's Surname Spouse's Forename(s) Year Church / Register Office Registers At Region Reference CARR Mary WALLS Charles 1842 Middleton St Andrew, Ryedale Harrogate Yorkshire C42RY/1/49 <http://www.yorkshirebmd.info/cgi/pma.cgi?date=1842&county=yorkshire&referen ce=HE%3AC42RY%2F1%2F49&file=C&pos=3970&surname=WALLS&forename=Charles&area=H E> HOGGARD Thomas TAYLOR Elizabeth 1842 Middleton St Andrew, Ryedale Harrogate Yorkshire C42RY/1/50 <http://www.yorkshirebmd.info/cgi/pma.cgi?date=1842&county=yorkshire&referen ce=HE%3AC42RY%2F1%2F50&file=H&pos=29229&surname=TAYLOR&forename=Elizabeth&ar ea=HE> As you can see, the indexes based on the originals tell you more and are not missing names for partners. The database does make it easier for the Town Council to search their records (which are in multiple books) and for them to more easily answer queries from family historians. The Council has given us access to their records and has been very supportive of the project, but it has taken many years to complete. We've added a survey of the surviving MIs to the Burial and Plot Records maintained by the Council and the whole database gives an overview of the Cemetery. See www.wsmfhs.org.uk for more details and how to obtain a copy. It's under "News" and "Society News" As all churchyards in Weston were closed to new burials when the Milton Road Cemetery opened it has been the resting place for the majority of Weston's residents from 1856 until it outgrew the space available and the new Crematorium and Cemetery at Ebdon Road was opened in the 1970s (I'm not 100% sure of that opening date) For more details about the Cemetery see http://www.weston-super-maretowncouncil.gov.uk/milton-road-cemetery/friends-of-the-cemetery.aspx Pat ----- Original Message ----- From: "Charani" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, October 04, 2010 4:21 PM Subject: Re: [B&D] PRICE (c1890-c1980) > Pat Hase wrote: > >> The Weston-super-Mare FHS had published a CD with 17,000 burials and MIs >> in >> Weston Cemetery from its opening in 1856. > > This is the CD you were talking about at the Bunfight that you've (WsM > FHS) given a copy of to the council so they are as well informed about > the cemetery as the FHS? :)) > > -- > Charani (UK) > OPC for Walton, Greinton and Clutton, SOM > Asst OPC for Ashcott and Shapwick, SOM > http://wsom-opc.org.uk > http://www.savethegurkhas.co.uk/ > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' > without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

Pat, Glad you saw the SAGE - makes me realize how important it is to look for all these "incidental" connections... (such as servants; witnesses on marriage certificates; informants on death certificates...) Re HANCOCKs at Salt House: Robert John Hurley HANCOCK was my great-grandmother's brother. He seems to have worked his way up.... In 1851 census, his address was Albion Dock, Bristol; occupation "Clerk to shipbuilder". In 1861 census, his address was 1 Albion Park, Redcliff, Bristol; occupation "Cashier in shipbuilding yard". In 1871 census, his address was 2 Bagdad Terrace, Redland Park, Westbury on Trym, Bristol. His occupation: "Shipping manager". In 1881 census, his address was Salt House, Clevedon, Somerset; and his occupation: "Ship owner and shipping manager". In 1891 census, still at Salt House; occupation "Ship builder and ship owner." He died in 1900. (there's a memorial plaque to him in St Andrews Church, Clevedon.) [I didn't yet find the 1901 census record - I guess his widow Martha?] I don't know the circumstances of his move to Salt House: did he simply buy it? (as a more prestigious move on his upward path: Albion Dock to Westbury on Trym to.....). did he have family connections in Clevedon?? [I believe there were other HANCOCKs living in Clevedon...]. His younger sister Mary migrated to St Louis Missouri USA, where she married my g-grandfather Albert James HOME in 1873. I also have a little information about Robert Hancock's father John HANCOCK [1802 - 1841], and his mother Mary Morgan JONES [abt 1803 - 1886]. If any of this is of particular interest to anybody on this list, please let me know.... Have just had a look at the 1881 census for the Salt House at Clevedon and realised that the choice of meeting place was well made - not only were there connections with the HANCOCK family within the group but also a Martha SAGE was a servant there - any connection Ian? The HANCOCKS were there for many years - members of the family were resident in 1881, 1891 and 1901 - They must have been very settled there.
