It also seems a long time after the marriage for the couple to have three children - unless, of course, they had others elsewhere and then moved back to their home parish. Indeed, entering William Pearce and Elizabeth as the parents, choosing Somerset as the county and using 1800 +/- 20 years (do not enter anything at all in the first name and last name fields) produces a total of 16 entries (a couple are clearly duplicates). There are, of course, two Wraxalls in Somerset but I take it the one to which you refer is the parish near Bristol? The other Wraxall appears to be/have been in the parish of Ditcheat. -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 3. Hi Sandra, Thanks for replying but I can't see any links at the moment. On the 1841 census your family - with Elizabeth STOKES as a 4 year old daughter are at Branston in Leicestershire and her parents are said to have been born in county i.e. Leicestershire. I see that the whole family were on board the Randolph when it arrived in Lyttelton. I also see on Familysearch - the beta site - that a William STOKES married a Sarah WARD 13 April 1835 at Croxton Keyrial, Leicestershire. There is a place called Croxton Kerrial which is not very far from Branston in Leicestershire so this does look like a possible marriage for the parents of your Elizabeth. >From the same site I see that a William STOKES was christened in Branston 24 Aug 1817 s/o Thomas & Sarah Leicestershire is out of our area and STOKES is a relatively common name. My family appears to have been in Somerset for quite some time so I think it is fair to say that I would be surprised if there was a connection between out families. Hope you find time to unpack your boxes soon! 3. The baptisms for Christ Church, Bristol are included on Bristol Diocese Baptisms The Index & Transcripts 1754-1812 Vols11 to 14 available from the Bristol & Avon FHS but there is only one entry of a BALLARD and none of a BULLARD in Christ Church. The entry on the new Beta Familysearch certainly gives the christening as the 8th Feb 1772 but there is no christening listed against this date on the CD. However there is a slight discrepancy in that there is a christening listed under Christ Church for 1st Nov 1786 of a James Reed BALLARD s/o John & Ann BALLARD that does not appear in the alphabetical index. Perhaps someone is visiting the Bristol Record Office who could check the 1772 date for you. 3. I've lost a relation! Elizabeth STOKES was born in Portbury on 3rd Feb 1848 - she had a twin sister, Ann, who died shortly after their birth but they were both christened as soon as they were born. Their parents were Charles & Lavinia STOKES. The family is on the 1851 census of Portbury but by August 1852 they had moved to Wraxall where my great grandmother, another Ann, was born. I know a great deal about my great grandmother but not so much about Elizabeth and I am trying to fill in the gaps. In 1871 Elizabeth was a general domestic servant in West Hill Portishead and I know she witnessed Ann's marriage to William PINNOCK in Reading in 1878 where both Ann & Elizabeth were by then in service. On the 1881 census she is a cook at 17 Russell St., Reading - giving her birth place as Bristol. But after that I find it difficult to find her. By 1891 Ann was widowed and had moved back to Bristol settling in Bedminster with her children. Jumping forward some years - my mother told me how at about the age of 10 (in about 1920) she stayed with her great aunt Lizzie (the Elizabeth I am searching for) at Wraxall so presumably she had moved back to be near members of her family. I omitted to ask whether Lizzie had a husband or when she died so and that is all I know! If anyone else has researched this STOKES family I would be delighted to exchange information. Elizabeth had many siblings so perhaps someone else has looked at the family of Charles & Lavinia STOKES. With thanks Pat
