HI Everybody, I'm pasting correspondence here, with Karol's permission, that we recently had about the Brisbine family of Westmoreland. I have some more questions Karol! I'll post this, anyone who can help with information about the Westmoreland families please do! Hi Jackie, Nate Zipfel found a query we posted on the Brisbine name and sent me the address to subscribe to the BRISBIN_L list. After I subscribed Nate forwarded notes from you which I find extremely informative. We have been trying to locate documented information on this family for a long time. We made a trip to PA last fall and tried to copy mateial that we felt would be appropriate. At the end of one of your notes you asked "Where is our William?" Are you looking for the William that was born around 1758? If so, he is the first William on our line of four generations of William Brisbine. We have an e on the end of Brisbine but I think it is the same family. My 1758 William lived in Hempfield township in Westmoreland Co. Chuck Snyder and I recently started comparing notes on this William and I suggested that he also subscribe because he knew that Capt. John was the father of this William and he was apparently also a Capt. in the Revolutionary War. Let me know what you think. Karol Bruechert Hi Karol, Thanks for writing about the Brisbins. ...Just today I decided to sort William Brisbins. And was wondering again about William in Hempfield, Westmoreland Co., PA. He has perplexed mefor years! The question I asked, 'Where is my William?' is refering to a list (a stray scrap of paper really, not published) that Carlene Cohn found in a book at a Pennsylvania Historical Society library. Children of Capt. John Brisbin were listed on it, but not a William. It seems to be commonly accepted, but I can't prove it with primary documents, that William Brisbin of Centre County was a son of Capt. John Brisbin and his first wife Elinor Adcock. There are so many John Brisbins and Williams that the field gets CROWDED! I have 23 William Brisbins in my database and know that there are more. I won't even count the ones named John. I am certain of my descent from Frances Ann Brisbin b 17 Oct 1728. She married Morgan R. Savage on the plains 18 Jun 1846 and lived a long life in Oregon. Her father was John Brisbin. He died 1846 in the Cow Creek Canyon in Southern Oregon just short of their destination. John was a widower at the time. His descendants in Oregon left behind information that he was b 18 Feb 1781. He married Mary Miller in about 1803. He was a teacher, a judge, and a legislator. There are records of his work in Illinois. At least 3 of his children were born in Centre County, PA and we cannot find his marriage record. William Brisbin and his wife Sarah Moore appear to have been his parents. They lived in Centre County, PA and both named son John in their wills. Sarah named a granddaughter, Sarah dau of John, in her will, leaving them both something. Therefore John was not deceased, and our John Brisbin's first daughter was named Sarah Moore Brisbin. Later he named a son, William Moore Brisbin. So, the circumstancial evidence seems to point to these parents for him. William Brisbin of Centre County was born about 1757/58. Perhaps in Lancaster County. He died in Centre County in 1809. He had 11 children, and I have found out at least a little about most of them. But, things break down when it comes to proving that he was a son of Capt. John Brisbin. I have seen it in many genealogies, but not on a primary document. And, I don't have a long list of supporting evidence like I do connecting his son John. Every Brisbin family I have found named sons William and John, then Samuel and James! The girls were mostly Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth. Not the least bit helpful! Where are names like Irijah and Zithiry, like in my Byars family?????? Guess you can only get lucky once! Below I am pasting my notes for the William and James Brisbins of Westmoreland County. Can you shed any light on them for me? I just recently got the Census Index CDs from Family Tree Maker and will be looking them all up, but it takes a lot of time. Do you know how a Hiram Brisbin b abt 1815 in PA ties in? He could possibly be a descendant from the below James and William. Do you know how Arthur Brisbin ties in? I have notes on a couple of Arthur Brisbins too. The little note list is the only place where I have seen Arthur connected as a son of Capt. John Brisbin. Then there is Capt. William Brsibin m to Elizabeth Watson who is thought to be the brother of Capt. John. I have a lot about this family too. I am going to be posting to the list one day soon, I hope, the lists of all the Brisbins (of any spelling I can find) from the census CDs. There are three John Brisbins in the 1790 from PA. I'll be happy to forward any of my notes to you too. If you'd like we can talk about this on the list. That way others may have their memories sparked, and write in with little bits of information they have picked up too. When it is all compiled then we may get a better picture of how things were. All for now. It was nice to hear from you. Jackie Descendants of James Brisbin 1 James Brisbin b: Bef. 1739 d: Bef. 25 Aug 1779 Westmoreland Co., PA ..2 William Brisbin b: Bef. 1760 Westmoreland Co., PA ?? d: Unknown JAMES BRISBIN On 25 Aug 1779 William Brisbin, eldest son of the deceased, James Brisbin, was appointed administrator of the estate of his father. This was in Westmoreland Co.. William was ordered to make an Inventory of the personal estate and file the same in the Registers office at or before the 25 day of September next. He was ordered to make a calculation and reckoning of his administration on or before the 25th day of Aug. next. Publications of Genealogical Society of PA Vol. 6; Abstracts of Administrations of Westmoreland County found in will book #1, James Bristin Aug. 25, 1779 to eldest son William Briston. This James Brisbin died during the Revolutionary War. It would be interesting to find out of he died in the service of the Army or of other causes at home. It might also help to see if there was a will listing other family members. It seems to me that if William was made administrator of his father's estate and given these responsibilities, then he must have been an adult. Assuming he was at least 19, then he was born before 1760. James was an adult with an adult son when he died in 1779. He must have been at least 40 at the time of his death. He would have been born before 1739. I wonder what his relationship is to Capt John b 1930 and Capt William b 1728? Could he be another brother or a cousin????? Could this be William Brisbin b 1758 found in the DAR records (pvt. PA) who is married to Jennet Moore? That William d Hempfield, Westmoreland Co., PA, 20 Dec 1836 leaving in his will (written 24 Oct 1836), wife Jennet and children; Jane w of John McDowel, Rebecca w of Joesph Blackburn, Peggy w of John Loughery, Jennet wife of Robert Mitchell, William Jr., John, and James who died before 1836?
