    1. James Sanks letter to VA Governor
    2. Anne Futch
    3. Jackie - Thanks for all the census records. History of the War, Chapter II Robert Reid Howison May 1862 Page 277 Virginia loved the Union, which had been constructed under her fostering care - to which she had given seven presidents, and under which the country had grown great and prosperous. She desired, if possible , to preserve it, but her determination was steadfastly fixed, to require from the North a guaranty of Southern rights and abstinence from hostile acts against slavery. Her earnest efforts to save the Union, were misunderstood by many Northern people. On the 15th of November, a Pennsylvanian, calling himself JAMES S. BRISBIN, wrote a letter to Governor Letcher, of Virginia, stating that the movements of South Carolina for secession, were to some a matter of amusement - to others of alarm - that disunion should not be tolerated - that twenty-eight millions of freemen in the North would crush it - that if worst came, brother must march against brother, and concluded by saying, that two hundred Virginians had tendered "him their command", and he was ready to give his life to maintain the Union. To this effusion, Governor Letcher replied in a tone of stern rebuke, remarking upon the excited state of the public mind, and the necessity for measures of conciliation to restore, if possible, confidence and good feeling between the two sections; censuring the denunciatory spirit of Brisbin's letter, which as far as it could have any influence, would only add fuel to flame, reminding him that his own State Of Pennsylvania, was implicated in the crime of breaking the Constitution, by laws to resist the return of fugitive slaves, and informing him, that he was certainly in error, supposing that two Hundred "Virginians" had called him to their command, as the Governor could not believe that native citizens of the State, would ever invite a Pennsylvanian to command them, even should they be willing "to aid in the ungracious work of reducing a Southern sister State to the abject condition of a conquered province of the Federal government. (b) This letter from her Governor, probably represented the feelings of a majority of the people of Virginia at that time. They knew they had been deeply wronged by the North - they were resolved that redress should be obtained and their rights secured by guaranties adequate to the end, they unalterably opposed to coercion of Any Southern State, by the Federal government, but they earnestly desired to exhaust every honorable means to preserve the Union. Their error was in cherishing any longer the idle hope of finding honor and good faith among a people, a large majority of whom were given up to the dominion of avarice and fanaticism. This error was grave, and cost Virginia dearly: it induced her to delay taking possession of the strongholds on her soil, arming her peiople and uniting at once with her more Southern sisters. 1. Territorial Papers of the United States
    2. Anne Futch
    3. Hi all - the following I dl from the Univ. of FL library catalog. I can't vouch for all of the territorial books but I have spent a lot of time in the FL territory books. There are 4 of them and each is indexed. I have found them to be a big help in my FL research. Many of the early petitions to the US govt. are listed in them telling where the petition was signed, by whom and what the petition was for. You can send to the archives in DC for a copy of the petition. There are 28 volumes to the set which include all the territories. Major universities and large libraries should have all the volumes. You may even be able to get them on interbrary loan. I could not find what each vol. was for in the UF catalog but if someone found that at some library it would be most helpful to us to know which territories are in which volumes. 1. Making of America site
    2. Anne Futch
    3. Hi Ken & all - Thanks for your sites. The main reason I sent the other site is because it is a search for antebellum books & periodicals and shows the actual pages of the old article. Most of what I found for Brisbin was for James Sanks but pretty interesting. The site is called the "Making of America". You can't print from your pages at the site but in Internet Explorer if you right click the page and save it to disk you can open it as a .gif file later in your browser and print it. It was late last night when I found it. Should have been more specific. Following is from the site: Making of America (MOA) is a digital library of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction. The collection is particularly strong in the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology. The collection contains approximately 1,600 books and 50,000 journal articles with 19th century imprints. The project represents a major collaborative endeavor in preservation and electronic access to historical texts. The Making of American collection is made up of images of the pages in the books and journals. When you find something you want to look at, you will see a scanned image of the actual pages of the 19th century volume. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) has been performed on the images to enhance searching and accessing the texts, but because we are concerned about the reliability of the OCR, we have chosen to present the page images -- for more on the OCR process see About MOA. A small, but growing, group of texts has also been fully processed and can be viewed either as page images or electronic text. Making of America is made possible by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Making of America is best viewed with a frames-capable browser. http://www.umdl.umich.edu/moa/ Anne Futch

    2. Jacqueline Marshall
    3. Hi Jackie, Yes, you may post my note to you a few days ago. I was interested in knowing if you were looking for the William in Hempfield Township. My personal research has not gone back beyond 1758, although we have collected copies of documents. Putting the pieces together has been challenging. This William's decendents later moved to Iowa. I understand that possibly two uncles moved to Oregon in the 1800's. So far, I have not seen any information or requests of information concerning ancestors in the Iowa area. I would love to make connections to my line of Brisbines. Karol Hi Karol and Anyone who can shed light on the Westmoreland family! Karol, even though I am not a descendant of your William Brisbine of Westmoreland County, I feel that it is really important that I learn about him. If he is the son of Capt. John Brisbin, then my William in Centre County was not. You hold the key!!! Please tell me more about him. Who was his wife? How did you link him to Capt. John? I have some information that I'll paste below. I got it from Muriel Brisbin Morrison who now lives in Oregon. She isn't doing genealogy any more because her husband is very ill. Is this William yours? I have run across two Brisbine men in Oregon. I have a copy of the estate probate of a William Brisbine. John Brisbine of Yamhill County was appointed administrator of the estate of William Brisbine of Clackamas County in Dec 1852. I have always wanted to identify these two. I believe John Brisbine had a Donation Land Claim too, and I could easily get that for you if you'd like. There are a few Iowa Brisbine families on the 1850 Census Index CD. A William was in Iowa twp, Cedar County, Iowa. I'm not finished with this list yet, will work on it today. Then will post it. Here is what I have on William Brisbine of Westmoreland Co., PA. Please feel free to make corrections and additions. Thank you for your help! I can think of a lot more questions, but will restrain myself for now. :) Jackie 1 William Brisbin, Pvt. b: 1758 d: 20 Dec 1836 Hempfield, Westmoreland, PA .+Jennet Moore m: Aft. 1778 d: Aft. 24 Oct 1836 ..2 Peggy Brisbin b: Aft. 1779 .... +John Loughery ...3 William Loughery ..2 Jane Brisbin b: Aft. 1779 .... +John McDowell m: 20 Dec 1798 Mt. Wasson NOTES: I have a photocopy of this William Brisbin's will, sent by Muriel Brisbin Morrison. He is also listed in the DAR lineage records. Could this William be the son of James Brisbin who died Westmoreland Co in 1779? James' Will went to probate 25 Aug 1779 and his oldest son William was appointed administrator.

    3. HI Everybody, I'm pasting correspondence here, with Karol's permission, that we recently had about the Brisbine family of Westmoreland. I have some more questions Karol! I'll post this, anyone who can help with information about the Westmoreland families please do! Hi Jackie, Nate Zipfel found a query we posted on the Brisbine name and sent me the address to subscribe to the BRISBIN_L list. After I subscribed Nate forwarded notes from you which I find extremely informative. We have been trying to locate documented information on this family for a long time. We made a trip to PA last fall and tried to copy mateial that we felt would be appropriate. At the end of one of your notes you asked "Where is our William?" Are you looking for the William that was born around 1758? If so, he is the first William on our line of four generations of William Brisbine. We have an e on the end of Brisbine but I think it is the same family. My 1758 William lived in Hempfield township in Westmoreland Co. Chuck Snyder and I recently started comparing notes on this William and I suggested that he also subscribe because he knew that Capt. John was the father of this William and he was apparently also a Capt. in the Revolutionary War. Let me know what you think. Karol Bruechert Hi Karol, Thanks for writing about the Brisbins. ...Just today I decided to sort William Brisbins. And was wondering again about William in Hempfield, Westmoreland Co., PA. He has perplexed mefor years! The question I asked, 'Where is my William?' is refering to a list (a stray scrap of paper really, not published) that Carlene Cohn found in a book at a Pennsylvania Historical Society library. Children of Capt. John Brisbin were listed on it, but not a William. It seems to be commonly accepted, but I can't prove it with primary documents, that William Brisbin of Centre County was a son of Capt. John Brisbin and his first wife Elinor Adcock. There are so many John Brisbins and Williams that the field gets CROWDED! I have 23 William Brisbins in my database and know that there are more. I won't even count the ones named John. I am certain of my descent from Frances Ann Brisbin b 17 Oct 1728. She married Morgan R. Savage on the plains 18 Jun 1846 and lived a long life in Oregon. Her father was John Brisbin. He died 1846 in the Cow Creek Canyon in Southern Oregon just short of their destination. John was a widower at the time. His descendants in Oregon left behind information that he was b 18 Feb 1781. He married Mary Miller in about 1803. He was a teacher, a judge, and a legislator. There are records of his work in Illinois. At least 3 of his children were born in Centre County, PA and we cannot find his marriage record. William Brisbin and his wife Sarah Moore appear to have been his parents. They lived in Centre County, PA and both named son John in their wills. Sarah named a granddaughter, Sarah dau of John, in her will, leaving them both something. Therefore John was not deceased, and our John Brisbin's first daughter was named Sarah Moore Brisbin. Later he named a son, William Moore Brisbin. So, the circumstancial evidence seems to point to these parents for him. William Brisbin of Centre County was born about 1757/58. Perhaps in Lancaster County. He died in Centre County in 1809. He had 11 children, and I have found out at least a little about most of them. But, things break down when it comes to proving that he was a son of Capt. John Brisbin. I have seen it in many genealogies, but not on a primary document. And, I don't have a long list of supporting evidence like I do connecting his son John. Every Brisbin family I have found named sons William and John, then Samuel and James! The girls were mostly Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth. Not the least bit helpful! Where are names like Irijah and Zithiry, like in my Byars family?????? Guess you can only get lucky once! Below I am pasting my notes for the William and James Brisbins of Westmoreland County. Can you shed any light on them for me? I just recently got the Census Index CDs from Family Tree Maker and will be looking them all up, but it takes a lot of time. Do you know how a Hiram Brisbin b abt 1815 in PA ties in? He could possibly be a descendant from the below James and William. Do you know how Arthur Brisbin ties in? I have notes on a couple of Arthur Brisbins too. The little note list is the only place where I have seen Arthur connected as a son of Capt. John Brisbin. Then there is Capt. William Brsibin m to Elizabeth Watson who is thought to be the brother of Capt. John. I have a lot about this family too. I am going to be posting to the list one day soon, I hope, the lists of all the Brisbins (of any spelling I can find) from the census CDs. There are three John Brisbins in the 1790 from PA. I'll be happy to forward any of my notes to you too. If you'd like we can talk about this on the list. That way others may have their memories sparked, and write in with little bits of information they have picked up too. When it is all compiled then we may get a better picture of how things were. All for now. It was nice to hear from you. Jackie Descendants of James Brisbin 1 James Brisbin b: Bef. 1739 d: Bef. 25 Aug 1779 Westmoreland Co., PA ..2 William Brisbin b: Bef. 1760 Westmoreland Co., PA ?? d: Unknown JAMES BRISBIN On 25 Aug 1779 William Brisbin, eldest son of the deceased, James Brisbin, was appointed administrator of the estate of his father. This was in Westmoreland Co.. William was ordered to make an Inventory of the personal estate and file the same in the Registers office at or before the 25 day of September next. He was ordered to make a calculation and reckoning of his administration on or before the 25th day of Aug. next. Publications of Genealogical Society of PA Vol. 6; Abstracts of Administrations of Westmoreland County found in will book #1, James Bristin Aug. 25, 1779 to eldest son William Briston. This James Brisbin died during the Revolutionary War. It would be interesting to find out of he died in the service of the Army or of other causes at home. It might also help to see if there was a will listing other family members. It seems to me that if William was made administrator of his father's estate and given these responsibilities, then he must have been an adult. Assuming he was at least 19, then he was born before 1760. James was an adult with an adult son when he died in 1779. He must have been at least 40 at the time of his death. He would have been born before 1739. I wonder what his relationship is to Capt John b 1930 and Capt William b 1728? Could he be another brother or a cousin????? Could this be William Brisbin b 1758 found in the DAR records (pvt. PA) who is married to Jennet Moore? That William d Hempfield, Westmoreland Co., PA, 20 Dec 1836 leaving in his will (written 24 Oct 1836), wife Jennet and children; Jane w of John McDowel, Rebecca w of Joesph Blackburn, Peggy w of John Loughery, Jennet wife of Robert Mitchell, William Jr., John, and James who died before 1836?

    1. Letter; James Sanks Brisbin 1861
    2. Jacqueline Marshall
    3. Hi Margie! (and Everyone), [Lyn, I see where you got your info now!] I have been thinking about you and wondering if you were still on the list! Glad to hear from you. I've been going to write you a 'real' letter in case you weren't on line, but just haven't gotten to it. I think spring has come to New Hampshire. The maple sugar people all have their cans out on the trees. Always a good sign! I just read Anne's note too. She is right. Unfortunately we don't really have any good primary documents with proof beyond a shadow of a doubt linking William Brisbin (with wife Sarah Moore) as the son of Capt. John. And the marriage in Maryland of Elinor Adcock & John Brisbin could be any John Brisbin. I recently received a copy of a letter written by James Sanks Brisbin in 1861. IF it is true, or even the general gist of it, then our William may have been an immigrant and he may not have been a son of Capt. John. This is all pretty unsettling! Previous genealogists seem to have made the decision that William was John's son and they published the information. But, where are their proofs? I have always accepted it too, up to now. We have had a message from some folks who found that William Brisbin of Westmoreland county was a son of Capt. John. This is possible. Arthur is in Westmoreland county, and he looks like he may be a son of Capt. John's too. There are many problems with this letter, I might add. William and Sarah (Moore) had more children than he lists. And I don't even agree with all the information he gives on them. I feel like James Sanks Brisbin didn't really know his family very well. But, he was the youngest son of a youngest son, so a lot of time had gone by. I sure do wonder who the 'Mr. Brisbin' was that he was writing to! I have never heard the story of a William Brisbin fighting at the Alamo either. He is not on any official list. This may be pure family lore! But, again I have lost the William who was my John Brisbin's brother. He could have gone to Texas. Wish some of his descendants would show up on our list! I'll copy & paste the letter below. All for now. Hope you have something that can help. Jackie The following was sent to me by John Lyon Brisbin, Jr. (Feb 1998) His copy says that this letter was written August 1861. The original is located at the Montana Historical Society Archives, Helena, Montana. I have copied it exactly as it was sent to me. Special Statement Mr. Brisbin DrSir [sic] Feeling confident that a statement relative to our family will be highly satisfactory to you I beg leave to communicate the following information which I have from time to time gathered from many sources. So far as I can learn there was originally but one family of the Brisbins who dwelt in Ireland near Dublin City. From this stock all the Brisbins now in America have descended One branch of the Brisbin family in Ireland lived in Cork. My great grandfather lived in Dublin and was engaged in one of the Irish Rebellions. My grandfather was a citizen of Dublin also and to [sic] part in the rebellion of 1798. The rebellion failed and he was compelled to leave Ireland. He escaped from the Irish Coast by being put into a Hogshead and rolled on ship board in the night. In thus he remained until the vessel was three days at sea and clear of the English Cruiziers [?] It is said to be a fact that the British officers actually boarded the ship on which my grandfather was and that one of the British officers actually rolled over the Hogshead in which my ancestor was concealed. After coming to this country my grandfather first settled in West Chester, Pennsylvania but afterwards removed to Boalsburg Pennsylvania in Centre Co. His family joined him soon after coming to America and he lived for many years at Boalsburg and finally died there. He left to my knowledge five sons and one daughter Amos, William, Joshua, Samuel and Ezra and Mary Amos was out in the War of 1812 and died soon after the close of the war William fought in the War of 1812 and afterwards removed to Texas He was also engaged in the ______ Texan War and died at the fall of the Alamo. He is said to have been one of the seven who when all their companions had fallen were asked if they would surrender They said No and died fighting The wonderful David Crockett the world wide known Mike Fink and the brave and celebrated James Bowie the inventor of the Bowie Knife were among the seven who refused to surrender William Brisbin has now a son William living in Lower Texas who is a sheepherder My Uncle Joshua was out in the War of 1812 and died on his way home after its close He is said to have been a powerful man measuring four feet across the shoulders and six feet four inches in height My Uncle Samuel lived for many years with my father but afterwards went to Arkansas where he had a son and daughter living. Soon after arriving in Arkansas he died. My father still live [sic] as Boalsburg in Centre County on the old family homestead of his father. Mary married a man by the name of Boal and removed to Clarion Co. Pennsylvania where she was living a few years ago a widow my father married a lady by the name of Packer They had eleven children of whom eight are living Joshua, Ellen, Eliza, Sarah, Bethsheba, Charlotta, Isabella & James. Eliza married a man by the name of Jamison and resides at Blainsville, Pa Ellen is married to Dr. R. Hunter a man of celebrity Isabella and Charlotta married two brothers Jesse and John Morgan the [sic] reside in Centre Co Bethsheba married to Col. Wm W Brown a man of some note. They also live in Centre Co Joshua is married to a lady by the name of Neil and lives in Center Co Sarah the youngest daughter is unmarried My wife's name was Wagner a daughter of David M. Wagner's formerly of the firm of Wagner Thomas & Sons I was born at Boalsburg Centre Co. And brought up on a farm I read Law with Bro-in-law [sic] Col Brown and afterwards brought and printed a paper in Centre Co I recd an appointment of 2d Leiut [sic] in the Regular Army soon after my connection with the newspaper I retired from the paper and soon after engaged in the war I was at the Battle of Bulls Run and twice-wounded in that engagement I was promoted a Captain on the 5th of August 1861 which position I now hold If you will desire it I can furnish you a sketch of the people by the name of Brisbin that I have met at different [sic] times and places. I will be glad to receive any information concerning our people and will feel truly greatful [sic] if you will write out what you may know about them. Very Respectfully Your obt Sevt James S. Brisbin Capt 6th Cavalry US Regular Army
