Hi to everyone, It's me again David Brimson. I am after some info on the Brimson's in the USA, well one branch anyway. There is one branch or person that I am interested in, amongst others. It is a James Ashton Brimson who was born in Arkansas in 1891 & who is also buried there in 1967. There are not very many Brimson's in the USA so you will have to look hard to find any. I only know of 2 Brimson family Branches in the USA but there are others which are unknown. One branch comes from Tiverton in Devon (1860s), which are related to my family. The other branch are newer & come from (1920s) Merton, South London originally Maiden Bradley in Wiltshire. I have copied all the Brimson's from the social security death index. If anyone could get info next time they are in an archive doing research, as census data using the SOUNDEX system say for James in 1900 I would be very greatful :-). However the above are a mystery to me. Those of you with FTM on CD-ROM may have seen all the Brinson's listed in the Family Tree Finder Index & there are quite a few. Have you got this on your edition on yours ?. It's useful in finding that elusive Brinson. It's only an index & is there to prompt you into buying the additional CD-ROM with the info on that person such as a census for MA or KY etc. There are also Brimson's that I don't know anything about but these could also be Brinson's so look under this name & any other when searching as I have said in my previous little message's :-) It helps to use the SOUNDEX system which I did when looking for the above James Brimson when I was in Boston in July. I spent all day but couldn't find him :-( & ran out of time. The USA census's are better organised than over here & you have access to more. Here in England & Wales a census has to be 100 years old before it can be viewed & then it's not indexed. The last census we can look at is 1891 :-O which is not indexed. One would have to know where a person was living to find him. The 1881 census was indexed by a huge team of volunteers which took some years to do. The info was organised by the Church of Latter Day Saint's of Utah & is now on computer & fiche. The fist census of any value was taken in 1841 though the place of birth of a person is not indicated just whether he/she was born in the county. Our counties are the equivalent of your states but probably the size of your counties. The census is taken every 10 years here & the last one was in 1991 but a lot can happen in 10 years !. I was able to look at later census's, 1920 I think. It's a pity that I cannot look at later census's here as it would put some pieces of the jigsaw together so ,to speak. It looks as I have gone off in another direction again !. I seem to do this in family history & I'm sure you do to. Looking for that elusive ancestor something else crops up which you find interesting as in a news-paper etc. By the way if anyone has details in any census after 1890 of this chap could they let me know as I don't know anything of his family descent. He was born in Tiverton, Devon, England & emigrated with his parent's. The town of Brimson, MI is named after him. Thanks. I can trace the family back in England but know nothing in the USA or wher he lived or children if any. Some of the above may be his descendant's.
