    1. Re: Joseph Brimer
    2. Martha... I don't know which Joseph Brimer married Betsey Willett, or if there was more than one Joseph. There is a recording of a Joseph Brymer/Brimmer who married Celia Heard, Feb. 1780, in Abbeville District, SC at a village called Ninety Six. Joseph and Celia (Heard) Brimer/Brymer had a son by the name of (William) Nelson Brimer. This Joseph is believed to be the son of Benjamin Brimer of the Last Will and Testament that you referred to. The first son of Joseph was also named Benjamin. Joseph and Celia moved from SC to Hall County, GA in 1808 and lived there until their deaths. There is no relationship mentioned in regard to the William Brimer and James Brimer in the will. There is also no information that they were minors at the time. Also, there is a good indication that Joseph Brimer was a son, and likely the eldest son of Benjamin Brimer. I cannot answer your questions as to the relationships of those mentioned in Benjamin's will. However, I do have a comment as to the reference that 1/3 part was left to "Jessey Brimer". With a copy of the original will in front of me now, the name could just as easily be interpreted Josey Brimer, and more likely Josy. (This document is extremely difficult to read.) I do not believe that we can be sure that it says "Jessey" or "Josey". It looks to be a 4 letter name, beginning with "J". Josy could be a nickname for Joseph. Joseph is strangely not mentioned anyplace in the will, unless "Josy" could be referring to him. This is just my personal observation. FYI...Rebecah Brimer, the widow of Benjamin Brimer, married Van Davis shortly after the death of Benjamin. Hope this helps....Marjorie =========================================== In a message dated 4/12/01 5:28:14 PM Eastern Daylight Time, Martha007803@cs.com writes: > > > As I was looking for information on Joseph Brimer , son of Benjamin, I ran > across a marriage of a Joseph Brimer to Betsey Willett, 15 December 1801 , > in > Accawmack. Database: Virginia Marriages, 1740-1850, search results off of Ancestry.com. Does anyone know if this is the son of Benjamin? Also while researching Benjamin Brimer, came across " The Will of Benjamin Brimer, in the Pendleton District and Anderson County, SC Wills, Estates, Inventories, Tax Returns and Census Records. One third to Betsey Lenard. $50 to Caty Gober. 5 sterling to Rebecah the child of Samuel Brimer deceased. Five shillings apiece to William Brimer, Polly Haney, James Brimer. Desire William Leonard see to the business. Dated Jan. 13, 1803. Proven 30 Sept. 1803. Is Samuel a son to Benjamin or a brother ? Any help would be apprecaited with this family since I am knew to researching my Brimer line. Martha

    1. Re: The best Poem I have ever read................
    2. TODAY I VISITED YESTERDAY By Pat Conner Rice Today I visited yesterday, And walked among the graves Of family and friends from long ago. Whose memory had begun to fade. The graves were unattended As were my thoughts of them When a vision of the ages past Brought back my sense of kin. The vision showed the church lawn On a crisp summer day The table spread, the food prepared And friends who would break bread All my relatives were there. Both young and old Grandma and I walked hand and hand Sharing stories never told We laughed and cried and Shared our thoughts. And I found the friend I thought I’d lost. As the sun began to fade… The church bell rang out clear Grandma and the others slowly disappeared Today I visited yesterday And now the memory is strong Of the family from which I came AND NOW BELONG…

    1. Re: A letter to my ancestors................
    2. I thought maybe some of you could use this when you get stuck or run into a brick wall...looking for your ancestors. It has been on the TENNESSEE-L@rootsweb.com list for some time now............................. LETTER TO MY ANCESTORS After spending a frustrating evening pouring over illegible handwriting in badly damaged and out of focus parish registers - and still NOT finding my relatives, I thought it was time to send an open email (at www.ofcoursethereisaHeaven.com) to all my "Upstairs" relatives who have gone to Heaven (99% of them) or the Other Place (1%). The text follows. (Feel free to insert your own relative's names where appropriate.) "Dear __________________: I am your _____________ and living in the early 21st century here in___________, ______. I am sitting in front of a microfilm projector (I'll explain what that is in a later email) in a special library run by the LDS (nice people, but later on them, too) trying to decipher the small and shaky handwriting of your parish's minister/vicar/curate (choose one).He must have been either vertically challenged or had palsy - because it's unreadable! At least I think it's your parish! I'm not even sure of the decade. Thanks for leaving such a good paper trail! (Sarcasm intended.) According to family legend, you and your wife ___________ had _____ children, some of whom lived beyond infancy. Yet not a single one was recorded in the parish records! I can't even find your marriage certificate. You two WERE married, right? Didn't you know that there would be legions of people like me fanatically spending their waking hours and small fortunes looking for any and all traces of your lives? Were you just stubborn, couldn't afford the fees, or not members of the Established (or any) Church? You're wondering, "What's all the fuss, we're dead as doornails?" We're not sure, but I think down here we're infected with the same disease:Rootsus obsessionus. Of course, WE are going to leave better records for our descendants! Anyway, I'm glad I was able to vent my frustrations upward. If I couldn't do that, I'd have probably popped the obnoxious researcher next to me who is right now translating an old parish records in German - and out loud, for Pete's sake! I have an idea.... When I'm "dead-on" (pardon the expression) to finding the correct record, give me some sort of sign. Make the projector bulb flicker twice. Or, if it must be done in the privacy of my home, I have a Labrador Retriever. Talk through her. That will get my attention for sure. Thanks for listening. I'll be better in the morning..... I'll be back at the library tomorrow night for Round 14, so catch me there. Sincerely, Your ________________, Author Unknown to me

    1. Re: The "Smock Wedding"............
    2. The following message was received today and I thought it would be of interest to someone on the genealogy lists......... Hello Everyone: I recently came across the following genealogical tidbit from a family history book that had come into my possession and thought I would share it with the list. The source will follow the text. THE SMOCK WEDDING “One of the more unusual customs that came to America was the SMOCK WEDDING. Under English common law if a widow remarried and brought any of her late husband’s property to the marriage, the new husband became liable for any and all the debts of the previous husband. Women owned nothing in their own right, and this included their clothing. So it became the custom for indebted widows to get married in their underwear, or smocks.” “The SMOCK WEDDING was tripple-fold. It was a bankruptcy proceeding; it was a marriage ceremony; it was an investiture because the bride then got a new wardrobe from her new husband”. “In theory the ceremony was held for all to see, on a public highway. But in practice many smock weddings were indoors.” “When Major Moses JOY married Widow Hannah WARD of Newfame, Vermont, in 1789, she was stark naked. She was in a closet, her hand extended through a hole cut in the door. Then she put on a fine set of clothes and emerged from her closet in style, to the general admiration of the assembled” Source: Ancestors and Descendants of LEWIS ROSS FREEMAN with related families By Patty Barthell Myers Penobscot Press 1995. 1. Re: Jesse BRIMER [1770--1814] Military Record Info..........
    2. Received the followinig from National Archives in response to order for copy of Military Record of Jesse BRIMER [1770--1814]. Dear Researcher: Prior to 1912, the War Department did not maintain individual personnel files for Regular Army enlisted men. At the time of enlistment, the recruiting officer completed an enlistment paper. The information on that paper was then entered in a large bound volume called an enlistment register. These registers identify the unit to which the soldier was assigned, and include a "Remarks" column. This column sometimes contains information regarding the soldier's service, but in most cases provides only the basic details concerning his departure from the Army, such as by death, desertion, or discharge. (In the case of discharge, a single discharge paper was prepared and given to the soldier. The War Department did not retain a copy.) We are enclosing copies of enlistment papers for (NONE EXTANT): Jesse BRIMER The following information is taken from the enlistment register: Unit in which soldier served: 7th U. S. Infantry Remarks: Company Commander - Captain Jas. DOHERTY Physical Description - 5' 10", blue eyes, fair hair, light complexion Age - 43 years Where born - North Carolina Enlisted - 14 June 1813 in Tenn for 5 years by Capt. DOHERTY Company Book 1813 & 1814, present at Dandridge, 14 Jun 1813; at Knoxville, 06 Oct 1813; and at Highwassee, 07 Nov 1813; died February 10 or 11, 1814 at Highwassee Garrison, Tennessee - see Pension Case (Book 668) This leads me to believe that a Pension was applied for by either his wife or children. I have ordered a copy of a Pension File on him and was told that there was NONE by an archivist on 27 Aug 1999. Why would a reference be made to a PENSION CASE in "Book 668" if none existed?????? The Archivist did NOT look in Book 668 and give that information. I hope this will be of use to a family researcher on one of the genealogy forums. Jesse BRIMER was the father of Sabra BRIMER who married Peter CARWILE on 17 Nov 1830 in Jefferson Co, TN. Peter CARWILE was my 2nd Great-grandfather. Bobby G. Carwile
