Hi Leslie: I thought so, but our DNA's don't match. My Bridges DNA DOES match the DNA of the Sisk family of Hopkins,KY -- and they lived next to the mother of my James S. Bridges. I'm wondering if the Bridges child was really a Sisk child, and she was pregnant when she married William Bridges?? Or do our DNA's really match exactly those of other lines? -----Original Message----- From: ~~Leslie~~ [mailto:Aug67@cox.net] Sent: Monday, January 31, 2005 1:52 AM To: BRIDGES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [BRIDGES-L] Wm BRIDGESS (1805-1857) TN & KY Hello Everyone, I always get such a kick out of seeing the various spellings of my ancestors' names. So, I have just revisited the 1850 Robertson Co, TN, census, for my GGGgrandfather, who was listed as William BRIDGESS. He was born in 1805, and every census I have ever checked says that he was born in TN. He lived in Crittenden Co, KY for about 2 years following his marriage. Then he went back to Robertson Co, TN. Dawnene, isn't this man's siblings where our lines connect? Leslie (Bridges) Kohler
Dawnee, I think you just may have discovered one of the possible upsetting things about DNA and genealogical research being combined. You can find out of wedlock and illegitimate births. One question I would ask is did this birth come from a premarital relationship or an adulterous relationship. Not that it makes any real difference. It seems clear to me that this is not a Bridges child but a Fisk one biologically. Now for the truly important question: How is this knowledge to be handled genealogically? As a genealogist, do you trace the biological ancestry (Fisk) or the cultural, adoptive ancestry (Bridges)? Or maybe you trace both?
