    1. Re: [BRIDGES-L] Bridges in VA-Westmoreland
    2. I do not know if anyone is sure what Bridges, Bridges creek was named after--it is usually assumed it was Hercule Bridges who held an early patent near the creek. Someone may know more but I think the only mention of Hercule is the patent and it is thought he left no family. A William Bridges married an Elizabeth Pierce (Vaughn) about 1680 and claimed land formerly claimed by Vaughn plus additional land he got patents on. This was also near Pope Creek. He and his only known son William Bridges held the land. (He also had a daughter Mary-don't know what happened to her). The son sold all his Westmoreland land by the early 1740's and moved to what became Prince William. His only known children were William and Mary Bridges both underage when he died in mid 1740's. The Bridges Westmoreland land was sold to Augustine Washington and to Daniel McCarty. ---Nancy Harvey a descendant of John Bridges b. c. 1745 probably in Westmoreland-mother Martha unknown surname (Bridges) (Brown)--father unidentified.
