Can some VKS tell me "what death by consumption" means?? thanks

What is a VKS? I don't know that but i do know about consumption. Consumption was an old word for tuberculosis. People used to die from tuberculosis. They would be sent to a sanitarium. ...given fresh air....and whatever they had at the time...remember penicillin didn't come until I think 1941.
