    1. [BRIDGES-L] Oglethorpe Co. GA Cemeteries
    2. Another "for what it's worth" posting...just in case it helps someone out there! I don't have access to this book anymore, but here are all of the BRIDGES that I do show on the pages I copied, complete with whatever birth/death dates were given. If any of you have a "hit", let me know and I'll give you the exact location of the cemetery. **************************************** >From the book "Cemeteries of Oglethorpe County, Georgia" by Historic Oglethorpe County, Inc., Lexington GA, 1995: (pp 50-53) SANDY CROSS BAPTIST CHURCH BRIDGES, James Ed (b. 12 Jul 1905, d. 17 Aug 1985) BRIDGES, Elease Paul (b. 21 Jun 1910) (p 68) HARRIS/BRIDGES BRIDGES, Helen Irene (b. 23 Dec 1895, d. 5 May 1940) BRIDGES, Lula H(arris) (b. 30 Jun 1861, d. 3 Jun 1931) BRIDGES, Richard M. 1. [BRIDGES-L] Oglethorpe Co. Georgia BRIDGES
    2. Thought I would post some information that I have run across in my research of Oglethorpe County (GA) BRIDGES. It's a little long, but does hold some good info. Before you can ask :-) ... --It gives no middle name or initial, so I cannot verify which WILLIAM BRIDGES this is. --While "Oglethorpe" designates his county of residence, the book is not clear on what "Green's" refers to. --Unfortunately, I don't have the whole book (I only copied the pages pertinant to my search for *my* William), so I'm not able to do look-ups for other BRIDGES who may have participated in the land lottery. Sorry! So, for what it's worth (I hope it helps someone out there!), here goes... ***************************************** >From the book "The Cherokee Land Lottery - Containing a Numerical List of the Names of the Fortunate Drawers in Said Lottery" by James F. Smith, Harper & Brothers, NY, 1838: Exerpted from the foreword: "The last, or 1832 Land Lottery of Georgia, made available for distribution and settlement that part of the Cherokee Indian Nation which was in Georgia. This was a large area generally north of the Chattahoochee River in the north west and north central parts of the state...While the surveying was being carried out, those persons who had lived in Georgia three years immediately prior to the Acts of the General Assembly, registered to draw in the Lottery in their counties of residence...a person knew which lot he had drawn and if he subsequently paid to the state a grant fee of $18.00, a grant was issued to the lot he had drawn. This grant from the State of Georgia was his title to the lot and from that time he could do whatever he wished with his property, although the state did not require that he live on it or cultivate it...Immediately after the Lottery of 1832 was held, the whole area of Cherokee County was divided into ten counties, i.e., Cass (which was renamed Bartow in 1861), Cherokee, Cobb, Floyd, Forsyth, Gilmer, Lumpkin, Murray, Paulding and Union..." Exerpted from the winning lottery drawers lists: (p. 190) "27th District, Second Section, Cherokee/Lot 217--William Bridges, Green's, Oglethorpe" (p. 273) "16th District, Third Section, Cherokee/Lot 157--William Bridges, Green's, Oglethorpe" ******************************************

    1. Re: [BRIDGES-L] Susannah Bridges m Zachariah Robertson
    2. Hi Sheridan, There are at least two others working on Bridges in this area of Georgia, myself and Julia. Julia's Hardy Bridges (b. ca 1801) was in Greene County, GA as early as 1830 and probably the part of Greene Co. that was once part of Oglethorpe before that. My Ezekiel J. Bridges was not in Greene Co until 1850 but was probably in Newton Co. at one point. There was a Wiley Jones Bridges in that area who had a daughter named Martha b. 1801 who md. a Thomas Bowling GAY in Newton Co. and lived on the Newton / Jasper line. I believe this Wiley Jones Bridges was the father of my Ezekiel but am just trying to prove it. A family Bible stated his father was Wiley J. Bridges. There was also a Thomas Bridges and a Benjamin Bridges in early Greene Co. Wiley Jones Bridges' father was a Nathaniel Bridges (d. 1809 Oglethorpe). Could you please, please tell me what you know about Susannah? I would be happy to share anything I have on the Bridges families in this area and I know Julia would as well. Thank you, Anne Wise (WiserM@aol.com)

    2. Gil & Sonia Murray
    3. Hello Joyce, Your information may be a breakthrough for us! I think your Moses Bridges Sr. was Moses, the brother in law of our Alexander Davidson b. ca. 1744 Gloucester Co. VA, orphaned 1748 Spotsylvania Co VA. Alex's first wife, according to family histories, was a Miss Bridges. In 1769 Moses Bridges witnessed in Orange Co NC when John Bridges of Prince William Co VA bought 340a. In 1772 John Bridges sold to Moses; Alex Davidson witnessed. Same year, Alex bought land there. John , James , and Moses Bridges were in Nash District Orange Co. near the Granville Co. line, in the area which became Caswell Co. in 1777. In 1771-5 (no date) Alex Davidson, John Davison, and Moses Bridges were among the inhabitants of the north part of Orange Co. who signed a petition to divide the county. Moses Bridges and Alex Davidson were on the 1777 tax list in Nash District. Both sold in Feb. of that year. In Dec 1777 Alex Davidson bought 150a. in Tryon Co. and in Jan 1778 Moses Bridges bought 50a. adjacent land. This was in the western area which was later divided off, becoming Rutherford Co. NC. In 1779 the Samuel Bumpass estate paid cash to Moses Bridges (Caswell Co.) In 1784, cash to Moses Bridges. In 1786 Granville Co., Alex Davidson sued Stephen Merritt. Same man??? In 1782, Alex Davidson, Isaac and Moses Bridges were on list of members of the Sandy Run Baptist Church in Rutherford Co. In 1782, Benjamin Bridges bought from Moses there. Sep 1783, Moses was bondsman when Alexander Davidson remarried (his first wife died during or shortly after birthing their youngest child in Feb 1783. James and Thomas Bridges were in Rutherford Co. in 1790. In 1797 Alexander Davidson sold his land and moved to Warren Co. KY by 1798, settling inthe area which became Barren Co. in 1799. In 1802, Moses witnessed in Rutherford Co., his mark a square. The will of James Bridges of Warren Co. KY was proved in Barren Co. KY in 1802 by Moses Bridges and Jonathan Cox. Tell us about William Bridges Sr. If he was Moses Bridges Sr.'s father, he was probably the father of Alex Davidson's first wife, Miss Bridges, our line. What do you have on him? What records do you have on Moses Sr. and Jr. and the other Bridges who tie to him - James and John? 3. This is my contribution on the Moses Bridges I have researched. I have some info on a Moses in Franklin Co., TN and will post it later. I would like to know if the Moses in Oglethorpe Co., GA in 1830, Dekalb Co., AL in 1840 and Choctaw Co., MS in 1850 are one and the same Moses. Also, is the Moses who married Elizabeth Yarborough in 1826 in Lincoln Co., NC the same Moses living with Elizabeth in Choctaw Co., MS in 1850. Apparently Elizabeth died between 1850 and 1860 and he was married to Martha Jester (?). Moses Bridges married Elizabeth Yarborough in 1826 in Lincoln Co., NC. 3. How did the Moses Bridges who was in Oglethorpe Co., GA in 1830 connect to the William from Ireland? Is this the same Moses Bridges who was in Dekalb Co., AL in 1840 and Choctaw/Webster Co., MS in 1850/60? May I suggest that since there were so many Moses Bridges each of us post what we have on them and maybe we can straighten them out. Glenda

    3. Hello! Moses Bridges, we believe the brother in law of Alexander Davidson, bought land next to Alexander in Nash District Orange Co., area that became Caswell Co., in 1772; they sold in 1777 and moved to Tryon Co., area that became Rutherford Co. NC. Moses was Alexander's bondsman when he remarried in 1783 following the death of his first wife, ---- Bridges. In 1798 Alexander Davidson removed to the area of Warren Co. KY that became Barren Co. Moses Davidson joined him there. We've been told where Moses went on to - have it in the file, will try to find it.
