    2. Hi Judy, Yes I believe thats what I am looking for. I am thinking that Thomas Warren's father came from Ireland and was a indentured survant, so he should be listed in the census living with another family on a farm or plantation or etc. An old aunt said she remembered stories from her father that his grandfather had to work for 3 yrs to pay back for bring him here to Ireland. I spent the day today in Jefferson City looking thru all of the MO census again. There is no sign of Thomas Warren (born TN) in MO before 1870 . So off to searching now in all counties of TN looking for them! I have a fealing I will be one of those 30 yrs gen. people looking for Thomas Warren! Thanks for the information. 1. Re: [BRIDGES-L] Slave schedules no-indentured servants
    2. Many people came to this country as indentured servants. They were not slaves--it was more like a work contract. In the 1600's there were even blacks who came as indentured servants. You served a specfic amount of time to repay the cost of your passage or perhaps an apprenticeship. Except for convicts the indentures were voluntary and a means to get ones passage over. As to where to search it depends on when they came. Some indentures are recorded in the courts but usually only if the terms of service were disputed--some are noted in various shipping records etc. or as part of records of a government program. Since most indentures were private contracts however most of them are not recorded.--Nancy Harvey

I am not an expert in these matters...but as I recall there were indentured servants who were caucasion...they worked off their ship passage and sponsorship in the manner you describe...betty.. 2. Briggs/ Brigs/ Briges/Bridger/Bridges are all forms of the same name. Spelling tended to evolve over time. Even if family did not change spelling clerks and census takers often did. 3. Guess what, Patty? That would be me, whose Bridges ancestors also ended up in Dunklin County, MO! Walter Bridges was next to two other Briggs surnames in the Christian County/Logan County, KY tax lists from 1792-1806. (I need to go find those in my notes). I've also wondered if he could have been a Briggs. However, all other Walter Bridges, that I am assuming could have been his descendants, did use the Bridges spelling. Dawnene
