I read in county history that he was from Augusta County, VA but have never been able to find record of him there. According to the historys he came to Dayton about 1809 when he would have been about 28 years old. I researched their children to see where his children said he was from on the census. They listed VA, PA and KY on census. A number of people have written his parents were John and Elsie Oliver but I don't see any thing to back it. I did find a marriage record for John and Elsie at St James Church in Lancaster PA Aug 20 1765. I contacted the church but they have no other records for them there. I am on e groups for Lancaster Co PA, Augusta Co VA, and Virgina hoping for leads. I don't think he was in War of 1812. He and his wife Mary Hardman had children by then. I have checked through the Chalkley records with nothing solid. It is hard with names like John and James! I visited Dayton library and looked through papers left by his grandson, James Oliver Arnold, and found reference to brother in Illinois, found record of him but nothing of parents or where he was from either. Any ideas on what else I might check. I have also considered hiring a professional but worried about the cost and if it would be worth it.
