I have thought that John might be his father, but I haven't been able to find a Daniel in any of the records for john or as a sibling to bennet or joames or thomas. Also, William L. Fowler was living with him in the the 1860 census and noted as Daniel being his "step-father-in law." I'll try to follow the john fowler line again more closely and see where it leads.
