Even if they civilly married, it may have been "blessed" at a later, and if the were Catholics, whether on not they were married in the Catholic church, it's highly likely their children were baptized in it. How to find that church? You search the city directory for where they were living and find the closest Catholic church, and one that served the Italian immigrant community. These are records you should try and find. You may find associated family members within them, ie, as godparents. This helps create a cohesive family to work from.
