It can't ever be presumed that a family attended the closest parish to their home. I have a similar quandry, needing church records, and trying to figure out which church was attended in the mid-to-late 1800s. It can be frustrating. Hopefully, the church where your Grandfather was christened will have some small bit of information about his parents that they noted in their parish register books. I wish you luck in pursuing the information! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Everything you would like to find is not on-line. This means you need to study how to research in order to understand where the resources are to find what you're looking for. You mention you been here: A super-site for Jewish Genealogy: http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/faq.html Reviewing the FAQS periodically might help you understand what should be your next steps. ================================== If you can't find the manifests on Ancestry & Ellis Island check NARA. All sites have different search tricks. Learning the tricks particular to every site to find records of mangled names. Start with the wife and daughter's entry. ============================= >>I'm not sure how to find the Declaration of Intent or the Original Documents, I can't find it online, but I found this and this is a match. << Yes, that INDEX appears to be a match, I confirmed the address on the index card with the address in the 1911 Chicago City Directory. [I suggest you "mine" the City directories, both Chicago and New York. This will hone your timeline.] Some States have full naturalization data on-line (fold3.com), but Illinois is not one them. Read here for how to obtain a Declaration of intent "first papers": http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.eb1d4c2a3e5b9ac89243c6a7543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=d21f3711ca5ca110VgnVCM1000004718190aRCRD&vgnextchannel=d21f3711ca5ca110VgnVCM1000004718190aRCRD =============================== You have naturalization index records linked to Bessie and daughter Lizzie. Before 1925, wives and minor children were automatically naturalized at the same time as the husband/father. They would not have applied on their own. We do have a baptismal record for my Grandad, but his parents' ages are not listed unfortunately. However, we do know the name of the church in which he was baptised, so that may have more information. The trouble is there are quite a lot of churches around the area, as inner-city parishes are all very close to each other, so there are about three others I can think of that are connected to my family. A baptismal record might list the ages of his parents. That way you can at least obtain the approx. birth year for George Stacey to see if you may have the correct person in the census. Is there a nearby parish church located in the area of the 1939 address you found? It could be a possibility they attended there. If so, they might be able to provide further information about your Grandfather's family. Best wishes in your research! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: sarah_stacey92 Surnames: Stacey Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.researchresources.brick-20-walls/435/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm having difficulty finding information about my great-grandfather, George Stacey. He was my grandad's father, and all I really know for definite is that he was born in South Dublin City and that he was a wire worker. I believe I may have found him and his family on both the 1901 and 1911 census. On the 1911 census he is 36 and a bachelor, but I know that at some point in the years ahead he married a woman named Catherine Scully and had three children, one of whom was my grandad (Stephen Stacey, born in 1923). Both George and Catherine died when my grandad was quite young, but I have no idea when this was because he rarely mentioned them. According to the 1901 census, George's parents were Joseph Stacey and Bridget Hand, but trying to find a birth record has been confusing since the ages don't match up to the census, so there must be a transcription error somewhere. I did find both George and Catherine on the 1939 electoral register for Dublin City, where they were living at 19 Great Longford Street. That is as far as I have got. I would love to find a marriage record and find out when they both died, but I haven't been able to find anything online, and unfortunately no one in the family has any idea where either of them are buried. My grandad died in 2002 so it's a shame nobody thought of asking him while he was alive. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful. I know the rest of the Stacey family would love to have more information on my grandad's parents. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: EricaHersh Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.researchresources.brick-20-walls/434.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank you so much for your reply/help..... My Aunt Toni Miller/Donnell and I have been working on my Family Tree for years. So far this is what we found, in addition to the US Census' all 1910-1940 I have everyone's address/locations for almost all the Census. Everyone is Jewish. I have searched JewGen.org, NY Sites, Nassau/Suffolk/Kings/Cook Counties, can't find too much, other than what is attached to their names. I searched all the manifests to find Philip Shapiro, I can't find his name for the Date/location-I did check Ellis Island/Castel Garden/PA/Boston/Canada-Nothing. ____________________________________________________________ Philip Shapiro: WWI Draft: Can't find YET. Searched IL and NY/NJ - there is no match for year of Birthdate. Philip Shapiro: Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa > Soundex Index to Naturalization Petitions for the United States District and Circuit Courts, Northe. > S-152 H. through S-166 > 4992: Form S-160 Family Name and Given Name: Shapiro, Shapiro 6109 Wentworth Ave, Chicago, IL Cert # CN 145267 P-538 US Circuit Ct. Born: Emp of Russia on Jan 8 1875 Arrival July 13, 1897, NY, NY Date of Naturalization May 17, 1910 Wittnesses: Harry Northway 6109 Wentworth Ave, Chicago, IL B. POmarantz 17 W 47th St. Chicago, IL I'm not sure how to find the Declaration of Intent or the Original Documents, I can't find it online, but I found this and this is a match. Philip Owned a Hotel On Wentworth Avenue, Chicago, IL- he was indicted for running Speakeasy's/Prostitution Rings with Minors, and got off on a plea bargain. From what we have been told, both Philip and his Son, Jacob/Jack J. ran with the Jewish/Italian Mafia in Chicago. Jack would never speak of it to his wife or daughters, or the rest of the family, again. __________________________________________________________________ I know you attached the 1925 census you found. This would be a huge surprise that Bessie Shapiro was remarried. No one ever mentioned it, nor are there photographs of her a Husband at all. We do not have any documents, other than what we found online for Bessie and Philip Shapiro. In a way this would make sense on the name change to Miller. But, the Birthdates for everyone don't match their actual Birthdates, but I know Janice/Clara/Claire and Jacob/Jack J. had celebrated their birthday's on Sept. 9, so it was easier for them, per Clare's Daughter, Phyllis. So I decided to search for a marriage in NY for Bessie and this Harry Miller: To find out marriage years: http://www.italiangen.org/ : Surname Given Name Month of Marriage Day of Marriage Year of Marriage County Certificate Number Soundex: NO MATCH: Harry Miller to Merkin Bessie May 17 1925 Manhattan 13263 M625 Berg Bessie Jul 3 1927 Kings 9621 B620 Harry Kessler to only match.. The 1910 Census had everyone living in Chicago, The 1920 Census, everyone Moved to the Bronx, 1930 Census states that Bessie Miller is a Widow. I have all of Jacobs/Jack J. Shapiro/Miller's Chauffeur Licenses from 1927, and he always lived with Bessie until he got Married in the 1940's. No match to the street that is on the 1925 Census, but it still could be a possibility. Benjamin Shapiro/Miller was married by 1925 and lived upstate, NY. That is all we have so far. I know Toni and I are missing pieces....we are just trying to figure this all out. Thank you so much for your help again! We do appreciate it! ~Erica Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. His WW1 draft registration. He would have been obliged to register, unless he chose to sign up. His age would make it most likely he registered in 1918. That will help you pinpoint the move to NY. His naturalization "first papers", the Declaration of Intent. These can have very detailed data of origin and other data. Google how to obtain a copy. You know where he was living at the time, more than half the battle to obtaining a copy. The 1925 NY State Census is on-line. Find the family in it, further narrowing a death or "departure" time frame. It appears Bessie remarried to a Harry Miller, hence the surname Miller; and now you have a narrow time frame (1920-25) to search for a death or divorce record. New York, State Census, 1925 [ACOM Transcription, look at the original document] Name: Bessie Miller Birth Date: abt 1875 Birth Place: Russia Age: 50 Gender: Female Residence Place: New York, New York Relationship: Wife Color or Race: White Number of Years in US: 25 Assembly District: 04 House Number: 345 Line Number: 46 Page Number: 11 Household Members: Name Age Harry Miller 56 Bessie Miller 50 Benny Miller 21 Clara Miller 20 Jack Miller 19 Have you or your "we" actually searched for a death cert in NYC? Check the index on this site (not just Italian) and see if something doesn't match. http://www.italiangen.org/ He's specific on his date and year of arrival in the Naturalization index, have you checked for ships that entered port of NY on that date? We these individuals Jewish? There is a huge resource center in NYC for tracing Jewish ancestry. Google for it. If you're not directly related, you might not be able to get a copy of her death record, but try. Google "vital records Nassau New York genealogy".
