Author: dldove22 Surnames: Mercier Nipissing Maniwaki Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.researchresources.brick-20-walls/121.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My favorite trick to see how many people there are with the same last name is to search on Rootsweb and Familysearch to see how many others there are listed. It gives you an idea how difficult it will be to research a family. I don't know how common the last name Mercier is. The only Mercier I know is Abenaki Indian. I know there was a migration of Native people between Nipissing and Quebec and visiting Native relatives may be why Emile was there. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: KristaRiedel Surnames: Mercier, Rollin, Brouillard, Clement dit Lariviere Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.researchresources.brick-20-walls/121/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have only been researching my Fiance's family tree for the past 4 months. I have been breathing genealogy since I began. I have traced the family back to the 1490's from Quebec and into France and now I am trying to put some "meat on the bones" I guess you could say. I found my Fiance's grandfather, Emile Mercier in the 1901 census of Canada living with his mother and father in Maniwaki, Quebec. I was unable to find him in the 1911 census until I decided to put boundaries aside and open my mind to the possibility that he may not have always lived in Maniwaki like his children say he had. I discovered an entry in the 1911 Census that has his name and his brother's names as Lodgers. The birthdate for him seems to be a year off but the birthdate for his brother is spot on. What are the chances that there are 2 Merciers living in the same place as lodgers with the same birthdates and names as what I have in my records? With further research I have come to the conclusion that they may have been part of the Porcupine Gold Rush in Northern Ontario where I found them in the census. Now my question is, do you think these are the same people I am looking for and what should be the next step to find out more about why they had taken a trek all the way from Maniwaki, Quebec to Nipissing, Ontario? Also, in Emile Mercier's WWI records he was enlisted in Port Hope, Ontario which is not too too far from Nipissing. Anyways, I would appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks! I am looking for any information you may find on Howard Ball b.1890 in PA moved to Boston in 1891. On the 1910 census I have living with his sister in New haven connecticut. He Moved back to everett, MA Married Ruth Walker in 1913. On his WWI draft card also on the 1920 census he is still in Everett, MA. From there I cannot find anything else on him or his wife Ruth. On his sister Elizabeth Buttrick obits in 1934 there is no mention of Howard when her obit does list his other Brother Harry and John collins along with no mention of her other deceased sisters. This makes me think he may have died between 1920-1934. Howard is the son of Caroline and Henry Ball. Anything you could find would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again for your time and help. I cannot find my grandfathers father and mother . I went to the 1881 brit records and got the family then , basically missing a generation [ definite strike ]. Fred and Elizabeth SMITH [ born 1845 and 1845 respectively , I know this because my fathers great uncle was F E Smith [ Lord Birkenhead ]and he is also listed as a son. F E Smith has 2 brothers one who must have been my grandfather Frederick Sydney Leslie Smith born 1897 , Birkenhead , Cheshire. The 2 other sons were Sydney b 1875 and Harold b 1874. One is these is the right one !!! However cannot trace either of them forward to having F S l Smith born 1897 in Birkenhead. In the 1881 census they were living in Birkenhead , Cheshire , England . Hope this isn't too complicated , sometimes it is great to have someone take a fresh look at things... Author: dklart Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.researchresources.brick-20-walls/119.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Matt, You're a newbie searcher, correct? New searchers get frustrated and confused because they lack the basics skills to research, these things can be learned. In short course you can get up to speed, but learning basic skills can't be skipped. This is a basic: Start with what you know and HAVE documented, and work backwards documenting as you go along. You learn by doing, do have your grandparent's marriage, death, birth, baptismal records? Start with the easiest generation first, because as you go back, the paper trail becomes thinner. The census records are indispensable to rough out a time-line and assess locations but will never give you all you need to successfully research your ancestry. The documentation you need to be looking (at the very least) for are BMD records, and you're not going to find it all on the internet. The data you find in other people trees is not documentation, use it with caution and as a guide only. The best thing new searchers can do is read a "how to" genealogy book. It helps understand all the different resources, where to find them, and how to EVALUATE the information you find in them. Taking the time to learn the basic skills will make your journey less confusing and much more enjoyable. Your local library probably has a good selection to choose from and other resources you'll find very handy in the future. Good luck. I have back to Robert and Anges Lipsey. My name is now Lipsie however, i and i believe i found when the name change occured. in 1880 the census read lipsey by 1910 it read lipsie. The children from both records are the same so i assume the Agnes is the same as well. SO what i need help with is finding more info on Robert Lipsey. I have a couple concerns, first off a 1880 census puts his birth at 1853, however i have found another source dating it at 1848 and his death 1900. They year of his death would match a 1900 census i found in which Agnes is labled as a widow. ANY help on figuring out the info on RObert would be huge help.
