I read in county history that he was from Augusta County, VA but have never been able to find record of him there. According to the historys he came to Dayton about 1809 when he would have been about 28 years old. I researched their children to see where his children said he was from on the census. They listed VA, PA and KY on census. A number of people have written his parents were John and Elsie Oliver but I don't see any thing to back it. I did find a marriage record for John and Elsie at St James Church in Lancaster PA Aug 20 1765. I contacted the church but they have no other records for them there. I am on e groups for Lancaster Co PA, Augusta Co VA, and Virgina hoping for leads. I don't think he was in War of 1812. He and his wife Mary Hardman had children by then. I have checked through the Chalkley records with nothing solid. It is hard with names like John and James! I visited Dayton library and looked through papers left by his grandson, James Oliver Arnold, and found reference to brother in Illinois, found record of him but nothing of parents or where he was from either. Any ideas on what else I might check. I have also considered hiring a professional but worried about the cost and if it would be worth it. I have their wedding certificate and Agnes's death certificate. I also found the death of her mother, also Agnes, who died in 1849 @ GREENLEES, BLANTYRE. She left her 3 year old daughter and her husband Cornelius. I have found a death of a Cornelius Kelly who had been married to 2 other women, but no mention of his first wife. what makes me continuously go back to that death is the fact that the witness on the death certificate is his daughter Agnes McVay. His 2 wives on the certificate are; Nancy McAllion... & Dorcas McIlroy I can only find one of those marriages.. The problem is trying to prove that he is the one! Cornelius Kelly is such a common Irish name of those times, it is like searching for a John Smith.... as I have said many times. ;-0) Anyway Brian, thanks for helping me, but I have to hand the computer over to *number one son* for a while... Using Scotlands People... Mark McVay married Agnes Kelly at Rutherglen, Lanarkshire 13th Jan 1864(GRO 654/00 0018). Agnes was only 17, and he was 20. Cornelius Kelly married Catherine McGarry. This is an OPR look-up. Cornelius Kelly married Catherine McGarry on 24th April 1853. ...Their was a wedding ceremony in the Catholic church, dated 30th Apr 1853. This was at St Johns, Barrhead. You can get this on Scotlands People too, although I didn't open it up. I discovered a Cornelius Kelly died in 1868 aged 45 at Auckinleck, Ayrshire. (GRO 577/00 0008) and on the cert, it says he was married to Catherine McGarry, so this is good verification of the above. There is a death for an Agnes Kelly in 1855 at Dundonald in Ayrshire but it is a substitute of the original that Scotlands People shows you and not a very good one either. (590 1855) Will you see if you can find it anyway? Something bothers me though... If this is her true death in 1855, then how could Cornelius have married Catherine McGarry in 1853. Everything seems to fit in except for this! Can you figure it out? Or have I got mixed up somewhere? It's late. Let me know what you think sometime. Brian, Glasgow. P.S. Haven't yet found the first marriage for Cornelius, but I'll have another look tomorrow. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am with Scotlands people and have found the death of his wife Agnes Campbell, mother of his daughter Agnes Kelly. His wife died only 3 years after having her daughter and it took me a few years to find that information too. She was buried in a common grave poor woman. Do you have proof of her marriage then? I have a death for Cornelius Kelly whose daughter Agnes McVay was the witness on his death certificate. That intrigued me since his daughter Agnes married Mark McVay and they then had Their children, one of whom was my granddad John. So, if you have any records of the marriages or deaths, could you please let me know and I would then be able to order a few certificates. These are the FIRST breaks I have had since I found the wedding certificate of my G.Grand parents in JUNE 2005..... Then it took me until a couple of weeks ago to find the death of Agnes Kelly nee' Campbell. After all that time, I now have two people willing to help me. Thank you, and hope to hear from you soon. I'm stuck. For weeks now I've been trying to trace the parents of my great great grandfather Charles Copestake born 1851 in Hulland, Derbyshire. The 1851 cenus lists him (just 6 days old) as an 'add on' to another family. I'm assuming this is because of his age - perhaps he wasn't born when his parents completed theres??? Another Ancestry member found there to be 3 familys living in Hulland at the time, the best possibility being a Hannah and Thomas Copestake, both 27. After this census there is no mention of Hannah or Thomas again (not with the birthdates given of 1814). In 1861 there is a Hannah born 1806 living with 2 sons - charles and George. She is listed as 'wife' so I'm assuming the husband is not dead. In 1871 she is listed as living in a work house in Derbyshire. Her sons are now in Lancashire. The only Thomas I can find is a criminal record in 1853 aged 45. He was sentenced to 15 years hard labour in Australia and sailed in 1855 (the year George was born).! Could this be him? How will I know? Is this why Hannah was listed as married, but no sign of William??? If anyone with more experience can help me I'd be so pleased. Thank you.
