Both parents should be listed on that. Iowa has birth records back to 1880. See this website re: information: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/w2w/Iowa.htm You could also try his marriage license. That might have his parents' names. Since his daughter was born in Iowa, it's likely that he was married in Iowa. According to beta.familysearch.org, his wife was Leona Gertrude Crowley. Another resource would be his Social Security application. I believe this is him in the Social Security Death Index BUT I'm not 100% sure: Name: AL Kelchen SSN: 484-42-9707 Last Residence: 52310 Monticello, Jones, Iowa, United States of America Born: 8 Sep 1888 Died: Apr 1970 State (Year) SSN issued: Iowa (1955) If this IS him or if you have his death date from another source, then you could also order his death certificate -- which should have his parents' names, too. I think his parents are Katheirne GEORGE (mother) and John P KELCHEN (father), but I can't find any diffinitive proof of this. His paternal ancesters may have had the surname KLASSEN, or surnames that are similar to it. Either way, I can't find out much more than that, other than Katheirne and John probably immigrated to the USA from Germany, and that they were born in 1843 and 1837, respectively. Mistake?? Have found no trace anywhere.Might have more success with one of the girls certs. If you search for Llewellyn Eastwood on Ancestry, in the Historical Records and Family Trees, you come up with a few hits which I guess will be your man, as the only Family Tree which brings up his full name is yours (born 1878 in Retford). There is a death index entry which looks likely, so he may have come back to live in the UK later in life: Death 1944 Apr-May-Jun EASTWOOD, Llewellyn J, aged 66, Bridge, 2a 1504 You could try ordering the death certificate - if his wife survived him, she could well be the informant, but it's a bit of a gamble. Another couple of search results are for UK Incoming Passenger Lists, and I suspect they're both for your man. One is 1925, and shows Llewellyn with Catherine Eastwood, aged 42, and Kathleen Eastwood, aged 18. The other is 1927, and shows Llewellyn with Kathleen V, aged 44, and Sheila, aged 17. Whether Catherine and Kathleen V are the same person, I don't know, although it seems reasonably likely. However, you could try ordering one of the birth certificates of the two girls, who were presumably Llewellyn's daughters, and that would tell you the name of their mother. So from the above, Kathleen was born approx 1907 and Sheila approx 1910. Their birth index entries are both on the same GRO Overseas index page: Consular Births 1906-1910 EASTWOOD Kathleen I, Consulate: Tantah, Page: 1289 EASTWOOD Sheila, Consulate: Tantah, Page: 1295 or 1296 (could be either, it's not very clear) Christine Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Anyway, GRO indexes before 1912 didn't have the surname of the spouse included, and I guess that goes for the GRO Overseas indexes too, so you will only ever get one of the two names you're after until these index images are transcribed and cross-referenced. However, just one name will be enough to order the certificate, if your relative hasn't already definitely got it.
