Use the search field find particular surnames, topics, or locations. Click on a letter of the alphabet to drill down to surnames. The "Find a board about a specific topic" and "Names or keywords" search fields are also found on all board screens. Below "Find a board about a specific topic" you'll see "Localities Categories." Click on United States, then the folder that says States. Scroll down to the state you want and click on that. You'll then see several choices, including Unknown (if you don't know where in the state your ancestors lived), and the names of counties. Click on the county of relevance. If you know the county name, you can just enter it into the "Find a board about a specific topic" field. Supposed your ancestors came from Cumberland County, NC. Enter Cumberland into the field and you'll get Localities > United Kingdom and Ireland > England > Cumberland Localities > North America > Canada > Nova Scotia > Cumberland Localities > North America > United States > States > Illinois > Counties > Cumberland Localities > North America > United States > States > Kentucky > Counties > Cumberland Localities > North America > United States > States > Maine > Counties > Cumberland Localities > North America > United States > States > New Jersey > Counties > Cumberland Localities > North America > United States > States > North Carolina > Counties > Cumberland Localities > North America > United States > States > Pennsylvania > Counties > Cumberland Localities > North America > United States > States > Tennessee > Counties > Cumberland Localities > North America > United States > States > Virginia > Counties > Cumberland Click on the correct Cumberland -- Localities > North America > United States > States > North Carolina > Counties > Cumberland -- and you'll be taken to that board. Get a book or two from the library, local LDS centre, or local family history society on beginning family research. >From your tree on Ancestry.com it appears the majority of your family lived in North Carolina. His death certificate could have his parents' names on it. Have you located his will/probate records? Those probably won't have his parents but they may have his siblings -- which could help you piece together the family later on. How about published biographies and local history books? Those often had the person's parents in them. Do you know where he is buried? I found my ancestor's mother this way -- she was buried in the same plot! Where did he live most of his life? If you give me more re: the geography then I'll scout around re: what's available.... Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: back_to_adam Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.researchresources.brick-20-walls/201.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Ancestorville is not a "research site," it is a genealogy community--social networking--page on Facebook, hosted by the owner of a commercial enterprise, Ancestorville.com (you should check out the website). Lots of work is done there to identify strangers who are being added by dedicated volunteers to sites such as Find a Grave. It's in keeping with the spirit of volunteerism and collaboration in genealogy, similar to years ago when the censuses were not yet online and people emailed each other to ask for lookups. It is a place to come and enjoy yourself and ask for help on some sticky item or two or where to look for things you need. If you come there asking for independent, ground-up verification of what you already know and have published somewhere on the internet or in a book, it is highly likely that you will fairly quickly be BUSTED. Have you checked out familysearch.org? Many databases are available on-line on that site. Also you can search the library catalog on the site and see what films (church, vital, land records) are available for your area, and if there is a Family History Center near you, where you order them (for a nominal fee) and view them. A Genealogical/Historical Society in the area might be of help, you can google and see if there is one. Google the name of the county, state, and genealogy. Finding siblings is a way of discovering who the parents were, since they shared them. I would research every same surnamed individual in the areas he lived in, and see if they are connected somehow. The bap records for his children might have family as witness/godparents, Do you have those? Check out other marriage records that occurred in the same place within 10 years on either side of his first marriage, you might turn up some witnesses that relate or are him. Author: scottjritchey Surnames: Ritchey Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.researchresources.brick-20-walls/201/mb.ashx Message Board Post: So here's the deal - I've hit a brick wall with finding my ggg grandfather's parents. What I know: ggg Grandfather: David Preston Ritchey born Feb 11 1808. His obit lists the birth place as Blount County TN, however he lists his birth place on censuses alternately as TN or NC. He lists his parents birth place as NC on multiple censuses. He was a blacksmith by trade and a Cumberland Presbyterian Minister. He served in the civil war for the Confederacy as a Chaplain. He died in 1891. He was married twice: To Stacy Brown in 1829 in Marion County, TN and to Catherine Mitchell. Here's my question...what are some sources that I can use to find his parents? The early 19th century censuses do not list the entire household only the head of household. His marriage record does not list parents. His obit lists no parents. If there are birth records of that era I don't know where or how to find them. As a amateur researcher I am not yet aware of all the avenues to check. The man lived for 80 years...I'm sure that there is some record somewhere that lists his parents names...so what would that record be? PLEASE HELP!!!
