They lived in Arad, Hungary, today in Romania. They were both of Greek Orthodox faith, of Romanian nationality and language. I've discovered the marriage record of my maternal grandmother's parents recently and this is how the name Fondok came to be known to me. Before I just had the first name Eufimia, but not her last name. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The Ohio one married Margaret (mine's wife was Maria) and had children with very different names from my great grandfather and his siblings. The connection between Mathias and William Dennis is father and son (William Dennis was my great grandfather and Mary Elizabeth Weston was my great grandmother). Samuel Beamer is a likely suspect for Mathias' father, but I'm at a loss as to proving it. That would definitely put me back on track! Mathias would have been the eldest (according to the 1850 census, where Samuel and family were in Taylor, Centre, Pennsylvania) I think I'll research Samuel a bit more to see if there were any other children... maybe a John or three just to keep my head spinning! Thanks again for the renewed hope and information! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It doesn't help that every single generation (including my own) has at least one John Beamer and they all lived in the same basic area of the country during the early 1800's. I'll keep looking at parish records, perhaps there's a John I've overlooked and I can trace the other families to see if Mathias fits in with them somehow. Thanks for confirming I'm on a good track. Yes, the name variations will remain a challenge - LOL I've tried to search with wildcards but ancestry.com seems to choke on them a lot (I'll try the other databases you suggested - thank you). Example, I can leave everything on the search screen blank except town and sex and it will show me every male living in town. If I do the same thing with a wildcard in the name field it tells me there are too many results to display - weird. The Martin in New Jersey - I found the census record (thanks) and a lot of it seems to fit but I have trouble making the "leap of faith" that its him. On some message boards people will say that unless you have high-def video of them filling out the 1910 census form with one hand while their other hand is on the Bible then you can't even suggest that it might be a relative; other people say "Hey, they have an "E" in their name just like me! Must be grandpa!" What criteria do you use to take leaps of faith as to who someone is? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Have you been researching parish records in this area in this period? Family members typically stood as witnesses to marriages as well as godparents. This can help you connect them and get some clues you'll need to move back. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You'll never find the one true spelling, but you have a good idea of what it was at the time of immigration. Do you know how to wildcard search? That's how I'm finding data. Here's a possibility for Martin in the 1900. This data fits the rest of the story. He's married, but without his family, a boarder/hired man in the household. That puts him in the vicinity of the port of New York, narrowing the db's to start drilling down for the manifests. I don't know what set of db's you're searching in, but you should try all of them. NARA, Ancestry, Ellis Island, familysearch.org. ======================================================== 1900 United States Federal Census Name: Martin Rdrack Age: 48 Birth Date: Oct 1851 Birthplace: Russia Home in 1900: Verona, Essex, New Jersey Race: White Gender: Male Immigration Year: 1894 Relation to Head of House: Hired Man Marital Status: Married Father's Birthplace: Russia Mother's Birthplace: Russia You need to be tracking with period maps 1890-1910, boarders where constantly shifting in Europe, this is why there is no solid country they identified, but the origin is consistently Russian. Another clue in this census, he is "AL', alien. You can narrow down the place and time he filed his first papers. From what I can see, his sons all applied on their own, this means they were over 21 at the time he applied, and not covered under his application. You can almost pinpoint the year if you analyze the data. Back-out the sons naturalization first. The name variations aren't going to get any easier, if you want to search beyond the US shores. I suggest spending time and getting the lay of land, google Russian genealogy and start studying. You'll no doubt pick up some tips to help you on this side of the pond as well. Mathias C BEAMER was born about 1822 in Pennsylvania, although I can't find a birth record. He doesn't show up on a census until 1850 in Lower St. Clair, Allegheny, Pennsylvania with his wife, Maria(h). I can find him in 1860 census and have his Civil War record as serving 3 months in 1861 with a medical discharge. Family stories have him then joining the Pinkerton Agency and being either shot or hanged in the south as a spy during the war. Unfortunately, the Pinkerton records for the time/place were burned in the Chicago fires so I can't verify this but the family stories have been fairly true to history thus far. I can't find a death record either. I think he probably died about 1863 since his wife took the kids and re-married H Carrier in Oil City, PA. I've been told by relatives that the Beamer lineage comes from Switzerland originally. He could also be a BEEMER or any of the other variations of the name. The 1860 census has Mathias' family living next door to two other BEAMER families, but I haven't had any progress searching them either. I was hoping they would be some kind of relative, perhaps and Uncle or Cousin? Any ideas for a search will be really appreciated! Based on other records they also reported coming from different places like Germany, Lithuania, Poland and/or Russia. My great grandfather was Augustus Martin Radwick (b. 1852) and his wife was Pauline (b. 1855). Their children were Karl (b. 1882), Ludwig (b. 1884), Andrew (b. 1888), Albert (b. 1888) and William (b. 1892). Most of them settled in the Naugatuck Valley in Connecticut but William eventually moved to Cortland NY. Augustus (Maryin) shows up in the Naugatuck City directory in 1906 and various sons in the subsequent years. Nothing about them in the 1910 or 1920 census. One problem is that Radwick isn't their real name (from what I understand) and I've searched on all the variations of the name that I could find i.e. Radwick, Radweicke, Radwicke, etc etc. How do I go about finding immigration information for a family who came at different times, reporting different countries of origin and changed their name once they got here? I would love to find their real last name. ANY guidance will be GREATLY appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: AMV0801 Surnames: ALLEN, LOVEL Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.researchresources.brick-20-walls/398/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I've hit a brick wall with my 3rd great grandfather and grandmother. Their son, my 2nd great grandfather, was in the Civil War so I ordered copies of his file from the National Archives in hopes of finding a few helpful details, like a city or county of birth so I could place his family, but sadly there was absolutely no information about his birth place or parents. I do have a lot of info on Elijah and his family once he married, it's his parents on back where I hit the brick wall. I know there are many, many, many resources out there and I would appreciate some advice on where I might start looking since I don't have specific counties or cities to narrow things down. Here is what I have, thanks to Elijah's death certificate: Elijah ALLEN, born in Kentucky, April 5, 1843 Father: Ezra ALLEN, born in New York Mother: Katherine LOVEL, born in Scotland I have not been able to definitively identify Elijah in the 1850 Fed US Census, but believe he is living in Perry Township, Brown County, OH with Samuel and Esther CRAMAR. Also living in this household as a farmhand is a 17 year old Martin APPLEGATE, who I believe to be a son of one of Sarah APPLEGATE BISHOP's brothers. Sarah is the mother of Maria Lucetta BISHOP, who Elijah marries in 1861. Sarah and Maria and the rest of their family are also neighbors in this census. Another neighboring family is that of Benjamin D. CRAMER, brother to Samuel mentioned above. Living with Benjamin is another ALLEN child, a boy named Reason who was born in Kentucky about 1840. The CRAMAR/CRAMER brothers are from NJ, which neighbors NY where Ezra is supposedly from. While I haven't yet been able to connect them, I'm thinking they could possibly have known each other/traveled to OH/KY together and that's how Elijah ended up with Samuel. Age and surname could very possibly mean that Reason and Elijah are brothers and that sometime between 1843 (when Elijah was born) and 1850, something has happened to Katherine and/or Ezra and the children are sent to live with other families. I've traced Reason and believe he was also in the Civil War. He shows up in the 1870 Fed US Census in Illinois with a wife named Ellen and a 1 year old daughter, Mary. After that, they disappear, although I will admit I've not spent much time yet researching them. I know very well that most of what I've built above is based on nothing more than possibilities, but it's all I've got to go on for now. Ideas and suggestions welcome! Thanks!!
