Does anyone have a good timeline showing the major movements/events for Elder George Adam Martin? The references that I have seen are not all that clear but I have pieced together the following: >Martin was ordained at Coventry Church by Peter Becker 1739. He was baptized in 1737 (at Coventry?) >He was pastor at Little Conewago Church in York Co, Pa. in 1741 >In 1743 he and some families withdrew and formed Bermudian Church at East Berlin, York in now Adams Co., Pa. Daniel Leatherman replaced him at Conewago. >During the 1757 awakening, he attended a meeting at Eagle Church at Antietam at house of Joseph Greybuhl (I assume this is the same as Grable?) Is this near Hagerstown? I know Joseph Grable lived near there. >In 1762 he went from Ephrata to Antietam Church in Franklin Co., Pa. to work with Conrad Beissel and George Horn to establish hermitage which became Snow Hill. He was on tax lists in Antrim Twp of Franklin Co. 1751, 1753 1762-7. I gather he had his own church there? >In 1762, a church trial took place at Conewago Church wherein Martin was excommunicated. Those defending him included John Steiner, Peter and Abraham Knepper, Frederick Fuherman, George Schietier and Peter Zug. >In 1768, he went to Stoney Creek Congregation in Bedford Co.,Pa. Apparently he was in and out of here quite a bit. >He died 1794 at Brothers Valley, Bedford Co., Pa. Buried at Ephrata in Lancaster Co. Apparently he was in and out of Ephrata quite a bit. Did he go there from Coventry? Or go directly to York Co.? Part of my confusion has to do with references to the Antietam Church. One clear reference is about the Antietam Church in Franklin Co. and another reference seems to talk about the Antietam Church as being near where Joseph Grable lived near Hagerstown. Wondering how the Conococheaque Congregation fits into this. Also the Mumma Church near Sharpsburg? In other words, did the Antietam Church cover an area from southern Franklin Co., Pa. across most of Washington Co., Md. and this area include several local churches under the Antietam Church umbrella? I am trying to determine how Elder Martin might have interacted with several of my families e.g. Ludwig Miller (not the son of Michael), George Craft, Joseph Grable, George Leatherman, Peter Zook all of whom were in the southern Pa/Washington and Frederick, Md and moved to Fayette/Washington Co., Pa. These connections apparently go back to Conestoga/Ephrata and Coventry/Germantown as part of the overall Brethren movements. Any clarification of all this would be appreciated. Art Miller, Louisville
I'm looking for the parents of Elizabeth Martin, b. 15 Sep 1795 in NC, d. 18 Oct 1875 Leon, Decatur, IA, m. Daniel Sears 26 May 1817 Logan Co, KY. They lived also in Sangamon Co, Ill, Howard Co, MO, Jefferson Co, IA as well as Decatur Co, IA. In Jefferson Co, IA they are members of the Brethren Church in Liberty Twp. In Decatur Co, they were members of the Franklin Brethren Church and they are buried in the Franklin Cemetery. Would there have been an Elder Martin in KY around 1817 who had been in NC before that? I'm really stretching to try to figure this out. All records in court house in Decatur Co were destroyed in 1880 so we have no will, land records there. Court house records in Logan Co KY were also destroyed so I'm told. There is an index that states they were married but no parents names. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
