It sounds like you gals are up on current DAR verifying procedures and know that there were many approved old applications that would not be accepted today due to errors and misinformation. I guess Bill wants to believe some info that is out there as correct, but not all. There is a wealth of info that is now available that was not available 15 or 20 years ago, that we have access to today. Is it all correct? Of course not. The best proof is always first hand/original records and too many times those are not available or incorrect. For example the spelling of my parents' last name (and therefore mine), is not correct on the 1940 census - does that make all the info incorrect? No! BTW, the Hessian website is very helpful. I found out a number of years ago that my 4th great grandfather, Charles (Carl Ludwig) Wellbaum was a Hessian deserter. He married into a pacifist family, Mennonite I believe and the rest is history. Many people are not well informed about the Hessians and I had a hard time getting even a little info on them. I have a long history of Brethren or Mennonite ancestors, but I also have one Virginia ancestor who owned slaves. His will gives those slaves to some of my his daughters. However his daughter from whom I descend was not one of those. I have no idea if it was because of the religious influence of her husband who if not Brethren, produced descendants who were. Also, anyone can order a gravestone marker and have anything put on it.  The engraver does not question. People have been known to do all sorts of things to have the lineage they desire.
