Yes, the Smith Hessian soldiers in our tree were conscripted. The story came down that the two brothers were working in their family's farm fields and were taken by the king's men, without even having time to say goodbye to their family. Of course, this could have been embellished over time, but they did not go willingly. They were so unhappy about this that they escaped and joined the American troops and stayed for the duration of the war. They were not Brethren, though.
