The following are the comments about George Conrad Mack in "Counting the Cost." Willoughby doesn't indicate where this material came from but it may be at least partly from oral tradition. The reference to George Conrad being rebellious in "secular ways" may be a conclusion based on George Conrad's first child being born about a month after George Conrad and Anna Margaret were married, although I'm not sure that George Conrad's parents objected to this situation as much as Alexander may have. George Conrad's father seems to have been fairly generous to him in the will and George Conrad has children named Johan Philip and Anna Christina but no children named Alexander. "But the third son, George Conrad, a rebellious and difficult child, was often referred to as that 'cursed child,' and plans for him were uncertain." Page 25. "As a maturing young man, Mack had to think about his own future. He was made keenly aware of this when George Mack, the rebellious third son, announced his intentions of marrying Anna Margaret Schwartz from Ladenburg and leaving Schriesheim. After the wedding the Mack family bade George and Anna Margaret goodbye as they left to set up housekeeping in Ladenburg, where George could pursue his trade as a baker. The Mack family was not sorry to see George leave, for they looked upon him as a thorn in the flesh." "Both George and Alexander were rebellious against tradition, George in secular ways, Alexander in religious ways. It is quite evident that the stresses of operating the mill, the almost constant occupation by invading armies, and the pervasive insecurity of the times exacted a heavy toll from the Mack family." Page 28. Willoughby discusses the will of John Philip Mack, father of Alexander, Sr. and George Conrad: "To Jacob , the oldest, Mack gave one-half of the mill and to Alexander the other. To George he gave a house." ____________________________________________________________ Rock Solid Web Hosting.
