This is some info on him: His son was John Tanner who was captured by the Indians. was Baptist minister and a close associate of James Rucker. born in Va, before 1760 moved to NC, went to KY about 1780 lived in Madison, Woodford, Boone, Shelby, and Caldwell Counties in KY had wills in Missouri and in KY John Tanner was a Baptist preacher in Virginia, at a time when the law was that no ministers except those of the Church of England werepermitted to preach or teach publicly or privately. He was jailed atleast twice for preaching without a license. A monument was erected onthe site of the jail in 1925 to commemorate John Tanner and 5 otherjailed preachers. That monument is still there! John Tanner was alsoshot in the leg by a man who was irate that the Reverend had baptized hiswife. There is some confusion about the order and number of John'swives. Wife one may have been Dorcas or Susannah; his second wife (whosigned deeds as his wife until 1791) was Rachel Cain. He wed SallyRucker in July, 1792. The Rev. John Tanner died in 1812, Cape Girardeau,Missouri, after surviving the massive earthquake and moving away from theruins of the town. Book written about John Tanner: "The Family of Rev. John Tanner--BaptistPreacher" by Marguerite Hussey (now deceased) Also mentioned in Sudie Rucker Woods' book and mentioned in a history onbaptist ministers. Also mentioned in the Lyman Draper papers at University of Wisconsin. 1770 **************Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars.
