    3. Hi - could someone tell me how to read the entry in the Encyclopedia, pg. 1658, bottom left - regarding "Holler, George (CB)"? What does "adv." mean? Then what does the list of church/locations indicate after his name? I know he was in some of these places, but I am unsure what the meaning is as listed here. I don't think all these places are also church names. Any help is, as always, appreciated. winter

    3. Winter--"adv." as per the abbreviations found on page viii of Vol 3 refers to "advanced to 2nd degree of ministry." Usually you will find a date listed beside the "adv." if the date of advancement in the ministry is known. For George Holler, it evidently was unknown, but it is known that the work he did in the churches met 2nd degree expectations. I am not familiar enough with the Indiana churches to know whether these were names of the churches but it is evident the churches were located in these places, except for Grasshopper Valley which location was unknown. I believe there was a church named Markle which may also be the name of the town--same also for Nettle Creek. Hopefully someone familiar with Indiana churches can better answer this part of your question. Notice of his death is located in the Gospel Messenger, page 806, 1905. Most likely you will find an obituary for George Holler in the Gospel Messenger on page 806, 1905. The locations listed may be information obtained from the obituary. A copy of the obit would be helpful at this point.
