Is anyone researching the MARTZ line in Frederick County, MD? I am interested in learning who the parents were of Joanna Martz - the 1st wife of Francis Calvin Isaac Renner. She died in September of 1867 and had 2 children Ida who married Clayton KOLB and Newton Daniel who married Carrie May Murphy. I am also interested in knowing if she died in childbirth as I have a 3rd child listed as being born on the day of her death - would like to know the sex if possible. Blessings, Janet
Daniel Martz married Elizabeth Curfman on September 20, 1818. He was born March 24, 1793, and died January 17, 1865. She was born August 6, 1801 and died January 8, 1880. They are buried in St. John's Cemetery, Woodsboro, Md. They had eight children. .................. Daniel's Will was witnessed by Michael Shank, Isaac Renner, and William T. Barrick. It was filed January 14, 1865 and recorded January 30, 1865. William H. Martz was the Executor. The Upper County Page 64: the Martzes of Maryland by Ralph Fraley Martz, 1973. I visited with Ralph in 1976, (July 15th when he signed my copy of his book) and there are some major errors for anything near Woodsboro and Double Piper Creek that he had included in his works. I am a Mort (Mort / Morts / Mortz) and Ralph had rolled those names into his (Mart / Marts and Martz). They are very distinct families but difficult to tell them apart from how the names were spelled and written. Many times in the same record Mort / Mart / Martz / Mortz were in the same document! Matthias Martz is Mathias Mort and so are many of the descendants which he changed the spelling to Martz which he did recognize was a separate family but after so many years he could not separate them out. He did admitt to changes some of the spellings from Mort to Mart/Martz when he copied documents.. So anything from Northern Frederick has to have the source documents examined to tell if they are Mort or Martz. So one must be careful with anything he has done with families in this area. These appear to be true Martz. I have about 15,000 of the Mort identified but the older records are still very sketchy. None of the family groups that he worked on in this area should be trusted unless you verify the actual documents. Some are clearly Mort and others Martz and Mark.l Ralph does cover the Renner descendents very carefully. His (partial) index only covers MALES and no female names are indexed. I do have the Barrick History as well. I have never sorted all the Mort documents out that he has included as Martz. I had extracted Mort documents in the early 1970's but everything in Frederick County needs to be rechecked for Mort. They have added quite a few indexes to the older reocrds which sometime in the middle 1970's were moved from Frederick to the MSA about the time they build the new court house in Frederick which now hoses the historical society. A major problem as in the old script very difficult to tell the difference between the script "a" and "o" when the names were written.
