    3. First, I would like to ask a quick question of everyone. I'm interested in hearing from anyone who had family in 1840 WashingtonCo, IN. Washington Co may be my key to solving my mystery. --------------------- I've done a study of the Brethren Churches of far southern Indiana - included in my Kentucky Study - yes, there was one in Washington Co IN, south of Salem on the Blue River. The Wright families there were leaders in the formation of the Church of Christ (recorded as originally Brethren Preachers from Carolina). The Brethren Churches (5-6 of them near the Buffalo Trace - to near Bedford IN) The Adam Miller Family (1791 married Hannah Sheets - son of Casper) came there in 1824 from Rowan Co NC. Adam's son William (1806-1884) married first Elizabeth Winkler (1833) then Acenith Sill (1847). He remained in Washington Co IN - he ran a wagon freight line down to Louisville. One that might apply is the David Miller family (son of Peter Muller). David was a Brethren minister, came from Washington Co PA to Shelby Co KY (Brashear creek) about 1795, and moved up to Clark Co IN in 1814. David had a son William, born 1801, and I have nothing more on him (have on all the rest of the children). Washington Co was formed from Clark Co - and some of these families were there at the change. Also, the "Buffalo Trace" from Louisville to Vincennes (General Clark's Army route) went almost directly from the Brethren church area in Clark Co (south of New Washington), past the Brethren families in Washington Co as it went west. The Brethren Families in Washington Co IN that I have identified include Nathan Buchanan (minister, m. Rebecca Wright); David Colglazier (m. Cynthia May); Philip Copple (m. Anna Wrigt); Daniel Hardman (m. Elizabeth Leatherman); Adam Miller (m. Hannah Sheets); Adam Ribble (wife unknown); son John Ribble (minister, wife Margaret Streit); Joseph Ribble (m. Catherine Philips); William Ribble (m. Elizabeth Berkey); Amos Wright (minister of Revival, 1/m Elizabeth Lowe, 2/m Margaret Davis); John Wright (minister of Revival, 1/m Peggy Wolfescale, 2/m Nancy Perlee); Levi Wright (minister, m. Nancy Ross); Peter Wright (minister, 1/m Rachel Wood, 2/m Margaret Moore); Philberd Wright (minister of Revival, 1/m Mary Sears, 2/m Elizabeth Devan); Andrew Sheets (m. Sarah Stutzman); Most of these came from the Carolinas to Kentucky and up to Indiana. These were the families I identified as Brethren, there were connected families that I have not included. I have visited down that area - and done some research there. *********************** You wrote: "Col John MIller married Nancy Capper - 1 Jan 1800 in Franklin Co VA - from family informations they had 6 children: Martin (1802); John (1805); Thomas (1807); Elizabeth (1808); Mary 1811); and Benjamin (1815). " This "marriage" is a major problem for me. I have searched several reliable dbases [familysearch, ancestry, etc] and can find no source for this marriage anywhere. ------------------- I obtained the information on Col John Miller from our Union Co Records at the Library at Liberty IN and from one main member of the family. I will verify that it was accurate, and that the sources agreed with one another. I have been to Col John's house, and those of his children who lived here. Let me add, that Nancy Capper was born in Ireland, came to Virginia, to Franklin Co VA. The marriage was in Franklin Co VA records, that I verified with Gertrude Mann.(local historian there, now deceased). Most of my research was NOT from the internet - was done long before it existed. I was in direct correspondence with (even visited) Gertrude Mann, a major authority there in Franklin Co VA. She and I frequently compared information that she found, that was connected to these families that came to the Four Mile. I had papers and information from her and a number of other sources - 30-40 years ago - when I was working on my wife's families, which devolved into researching the origins of the Four Mile Church because of the normal "problem" we Brethren had, repeated intermarriages in the church families (and so often they were kin).. Much of this information I doubt if I can now find. Some might still be in my filing cabinet. *********************** There are 4 John Millers md in FranklinCo, VA - to Phebe McClure 1792, Hester Brower 1798, Margaret Turpin 1789 and Susannah Scott 1789. --------------------- George Chapman Miller (a cousin of Potter John, who lived back in Virginia) stated that there were 5 Miller brothers, all brethren ministers, who came down the valley to Franklin Co (Patricia Johnson "Elder Jacob Miller") - those known are: Elder Jacob, Tobias (m. Barbara Brower) and Baltzer. research in Franklin Co seems to indicate that the other two were Daniel and Isaac. (Baltzer's Will includes a sister: Catherine.) "Potter" John Miller married Phoebe McClure. She was the daughter of Halbert McClure and Mary Henderson, full sister to Isabella McClure, who married William Crawford (Potter John's best friend - they lived about a mile south, almost to Col John's place) and half sister to Sarah Henderson (dau of Samuel Henderson and Mary (Henderson) McClure) who married Potter John's brother Tobias Miller, and lived a half mile west of Potter John) - all here in then Franklin Co IN (now Union Co). I have done little to trace the brothers of Elder Jacob Miller. Only two of Tobias Miller's children have records, and they followed the Franklin County families on the Kanawha Trace coming this way, but went only to near Gallipolis OH, did not come on out here. The possible Daniel Miller and Isaac Miller both went to Tennessee, if I understand correctly. Might I point out, that there is considerable confusions on the various internet data. I have used it only during the last couple years (the Kentucky Book) - I have mostly gone to original research (and I do know how to do it - I have 2 Master's degrees and actually completed a third (an error in interdepartment correspondence lost it), some 5 years of Graduate Studies - in Bible, History and Physics). 3. Merle, I think I've figured out the major problem with the Miller/Capper marriage. You have stated that this marriage info came from Gertrude Mann, VA historian. But while another very old msg of yours speaks of Gertrude sending you a copy of the marriage record for Barbara Lybrook and Jacob Kingery, there has been no mention that she sent you a document for Col John and Nancy. Familysearch.org, the site I've referred to, contains the abstracted records [from original documents] from the LDS library in Salt Lake City. On this site I find the Barbara Lybrook/Jacob Kinsey [note misspelling] marriage of 2-12-1801. From this information I could easily order a copy of the original doc. With early marriage recs, I will often find up to 3 documents for a single marriage - the marriage bond, a marriage consent if the bride or groom is a minor, and the marriage license. If you check the Statistics page from our site http://hatcherfamilyassn.com/browsetrees.php you will note I've uploaded 1300+ original documents and nearly 3600 tombstone photos used to verify our family data. Documentation is the primary goal of our Hatcher researchers and we work very hard at it. This morning I did another search on ancestry and found a marriage reference for a John Miller and Nancy Capper. But this reference came from the <http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=7836&enc=1> /U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 /collection, a source not considered primary documentation by professional genealogists because of the secondary sources used to collect this information as shown below. * Source Information:* Yates Publishing. /U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900/ [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2004. Original data: This unique collection of records was extracted from a variety of sources including family group sheets and electronic databases. Originally, the information was derived from an array of materials including pedigree charts, family history articles, etc. Here is the info for Nancy and John from this dbase. Nancy Capper Female [bn] 1777 Ir [md] 1800 John Miller [bn] 1778 MD Notice that no county or state is provided for this marriage and the results for VA marriages compiled from official marriages do not include this marriage. It would appear that someone upon finding this information has decided this marriage must have occurred in Franklin, VA, even tho no evidence of this marriage has been found in the VA county/state archives. In short, family group sheets and family histories can't be considered as reliable sources but should only be considered as a clue. Going back to the census recs, the recs for the only person who could be Col John shows he had children born before 1800. And that also conflicts with this 1800 marriage. So that's why I can't rule out Col John as father of my Wm. But you are quite correct that internet data can be confusing and conflicting, particularly with a common name like Miller and the number of people so willing to simply copy someone else's garbage that compounds the problem. At the same time the genealogy community has been blessed with more and more state and county archives uploading original records online. No one has done a better job than the LVA but also TN, NC, SC, MO, IN, KY, and now the LDS. So, yes, some very fine research can now be done on the net but without question there will always be those times when it is necessary to go directly to these archives to get access to important records.
