    1. [BRE] Real Brethren Ghost Story
    2. Merle Rummel
    3. Elder Martin Gaby was the first pastor of the Oley Church (3rd Brethren Church in America), Berks Co PA. Two of his youngest children came here to Indiana Territory in the early days. Salome Gaby, wife of Daniel Fiant, came out in 1802, right after they were married, and settled at "Fiants Ford", the crossing of the Whitewater River (Delaware Indian Road), near now Yankeetown IN.. She was followed by her younger brother, John Gaby (wife: Hannah), who settled south of Salome, just west of Brownsville IN, on the road to John Conner's Trading Post (now Connersville IN). John Gaby had a daughter, Susannah, born in Maryland in 1802 (probably in the Beaver Dam area, where a sister lived - Esther, wife of John Pfoutz). We first have record of the John and Hannah family here in the Four Mile area, about 1814. In 1834 both families moved a few miles west, into Fayette Co IN, living just north of Springerville IN (which is on the same old road). John died before 1840, Hannah lived with Susannah and died before 1850. Susannah married Richard Strong, a medical doctor, in 1825. Richard died in 1848, Susannah died in 1883. The Strong Cemetery, on their farm, has headstones for Susannah and Richard, and a daughter, Henrietta. There are 8 more field stones as markers. (I really suspect that John and Hannah Gaby are buried here.) Daniel and Salome Gaby Fiant are buried on their farm, about a half mile west of the Strong House. Up until about 50 years ago, there were odd circumstances happening in the old Strong House. Footsteps would be heard climbing the steep steps to an upstairs bedroom, then a rocking chair, always left in the room, began to slowly rock. Lilac Perfume would often be smelled. One day , with the footsteps, a woman was seen entering the room, going toward the rocking chair. She wore a high collared blouse with a long flowing skirt, her hair was pulled up on top of her head. the person seeing the woman (as I remember, the mother of the lady telling me, a descendant), calmly said: "Susannah, you need to go!" - the woman disappeared, and none of the traces of her have been heard or seen since. As a preacher, and a scientist, this is hard for me to accept, but I do respect the person telling me of this. I think she told me the truth. These were Brethren Families. The New Bethel Brethren Church was on the corner of the Fiant farm. My wife's grandfather and gr grandfather went over there monthly to hold services. Her gr grandfather's second wife came from there, and is buried in the Cemetery at Springerville. Merle C Rummel
