" This "marriage" is a major problem for me. I have searched several reliable dbases [familysearch, ancestry, etc] and can find no source for this marriage anywhere. ------------------- This brings me to the one John I've found in Franklin/Union Co, IN, who I believe could be Wm's parents - the man called COL. JOHN MILLER. What I've seen so far is that he is assumed to be a cousin of Potter John Miller. No apparent proof that this is a correct assumption. His family does not seem to be clearly defined or complete. Several sites have him married to Nancy Capper with a specific 1800 date in FranklinCo, VA. I have been unable to confirm this date [or her maiden name] using several dbases. There is a family record in the old Union County history (c1885 - I forget the actual book name - I perused it repeatedly down at the Library in Liberty IN). Col John Miller was born 15 Apr 1778 in Washington Co MD (the Antietam Church there is where Elder Jacob Miller ws first put into the ministry - and there are still a large number of Miller families living there - I pastored out there, Frederick Co MD). He ws orphaned (I'm guessing probably around 10-12 years old - c1790 - father dying), and was "bound out" to Pennsylvania (since his brother, Martin, visited from Pennsylvania in 1839 - with son David - possibly he was "bound out" to an older married brother - after his father died?). He was married in Franklin Co VA to Nancy Capper, who was born 10 Jun 1777 (Nancy was nearly a year older than Col John). She was born in Ireland (per statement, location was possibly a family error - did the Capper family come from Ireland? - I have long imagined a red-headed Irish girl - I have a copy of the pictures of Col John and Nancy in my 200th Anniversary PowerPoint Presentation - at www.cob-net.org/docs/brethrenlife.htm). The migration to Franklin Co VA of 5 Miller brothers (probably Col John's uncles) - Col John then went there also, on reaching majority? - 21 yrs - 1799 - and married. Col John is very young to have a son William in 1795 (17 yrs). In 1809, Tobias Miller (brother of Potter John) came to Franklin Co IN (now Union Co) with Col John Miller, James Webster and James Guggs (Union Co History). Tobias Miller is identified in 1801 in Butler Co OH (just east, across the Ohio/Indiana state line - just where I didn't try to determine). Tobias lived on Indian Creek, just west of Potter John, and just north of the outcropping of Flint (constantly used by the Indians - Indian Village site). Tobias installed a Mill (sawmill, corn mill and tannery). [When Potter John came in 1805, it was Indiana Territory ("Indian Territory" - per the Greenville Treaty of 1797 - General Anthony Wayne) - this area beyond the Ohio State Line ws called "the Gore", now i 1809 it is Indiana a state.] The migration from the Four Mile to "Wabash Country" (Parke Co and north) started about 1820 (when Indian lands opened across the southern part of the state of Indiana). Tobias Miller, son of Potter John, was one of hte early ones. Several more of the Miller family went in 1823. Completely separate, my Kentucky research has found that George Boone and Squire Boone, brothers of Daniel Boone, were Baptist Brethren ministers in Kentucky (our name then) The Boone family (Squire Sr) had stopped in the Antietam Church area (north a little in Pennsylvania) - probably while some of the Miller families lived there. While the Boone family was originally Quaker - one or more of the Boone children had married into the Dunkers (our nickname) and the family was reprimanded, then ejected, by the Quaker Meeting. It looks suspiciously like the family went Brethren. They lived repeatedly in Brethren community areas - clear to MissouriAbraham and several brothers left PA and [for reasons unknown] moved to BlountCo, TN, where he married Nancy Hawkins [bn c1781 NC] in 1801. c1811 this family removed to FranklinCo, IN, where in Oct 1823 his daughter, Martha, married William MILLER. Abe and son-in-law William Miller then removed to ParkeCo, IN. A tiny but possibly relevant clue was a conversation with my cousin several years ago that her mother had mentioned that she had heard from family member[s] our William Miller "knew" Daniel Boone. I could come to no conclusion in attempting to confirm this "maybe" clue. Merle C Rummel
Some of the Harter family were also among the early Wabash County Brethren. Joseph Harter (m. Elizabeth Brower) moved there from Preble County, Ohio, in 1836 and was the first pastor of the North Manchester church. A year later Joseph's nephew, Israel Harter, joined him and in 1851 succeeded him as presiding elder of the church. There were a couple of marriages to Millers within these two families, but I have not pursued their possible connection to the family being discussed.
