    3. John: I am familiar with the Burkhart family of Allegheny Township, which my wife is a descendent. The patriarch of her family is Jacob Burkett who owned property near Brush and Wills Creeks. The 1816 map location is off a tad, if this is Jacob's property. I am unclear as to their religious denomination. My wife's ties to the Burkett's begin with her great grandmother, who was Roman Catholic. However, the cemetery where her great-great Burkett grandparents are buried is not Catholic. The New Baltimore area of Allegheny Township had a significant Roman Catholic population, but the area where Jacob lived had several Lutheran Churches in the 1876 Atlas. There also was a Burkett/Burkhart family that lived in Bedford County that was close to German Baptist areas. The nearest German Baptist community I am aware of near Allegheny Township where west of the mountain ridge along present Route 31, on the Stony Creek and Brothersvalley Township line. Bill Thomas

    3. Bill, Thank you for your response. I ask this question out of curiosity because my Shaffer family seems to have been so influenced by the German Baptists even before becoming members in Wayne County, Ohio. They drop out of Lutheran Church Baptismal records very early in the 1800's even though the family was still living in the same place. According to the records of the Berlin Reformed/Lutheran Church the Shaffers, Cohenours and Burkharts/Burketts witnessed the baptism of each other's children: So these families must have been Lutheran or Reformed before 1800. (My grandfather claimed they were Lutheran.) Jonathan, parents John Schafer and Catherine Born 10 September 1788 Baptized 17 Nov 1788, witnesses Jacob Borckfard and Elizabeth Samuel, parents Jacob Boochard, Elizabeth, Born 10 Apr 1790, Baptized 4 Jul 1790, witnesses John Shaffer, Catherine John, parents John Jacob Burkhard, Elizabeth, Born 20 Jan 1795 Baptized (no date) witnesses John Shafer, Susanna Elizabeth, parents Christian Lauchnour, Catherine, Born 29 Nov 1798, Baptized 24 Apr 1799, witnesses, John Shafer, Susanna This may not be of interest to you, but maybe others out there may have more information.
