Anything going back that far is very subjective. Even comparing the cost of living today with 30 years ago using the official consumer price index is full of holes, since they specifically exclude certain things from the index (those on Social Security are realizing that fact). Even the Dow Jones average is 'fixed'. If a stock is underperforming, they replace it with a different one to keep the index high.
