Date: Thu, 28 Apr 2011 15:11:38 -0600 Does anyone have knowledge of this colonization company headquartered in North Manchester, Indiana. This letterhead found among miscellaneous papers from the Mineral Creek/Leeton German Baptist Brethren Church, Leeton, Johnson County, MO contained the names of six Bowman births and three Bowman deaths. Reading the names of people connected to this company raised many questions in my mind. I would certainly like to know more about the company, where and when they planted colonies (of Brethren?) and who were the colonizers. What was the "co-operative plan"? Why did they need the capital stock or the incorporation? ************* Incorporated Capital Stock $25,000.00 CO-OPERATIVE COLONIZATION COMPANY. Main Office: North Manchester, Ind. Colonies located on the Co-operative Plan. South Bend, Ind. ****** S. F. Sanger, President Samuel Borough, Sec'y Dorsey Hogden, V. President W. W. Barnhart, Treas. __________________________________________________________ DIRECTORS S. F. Sanger, Samuel Borough, South Bend, Ind. North Manchester, Ind. Dorsey Hogden, W. W. Barnhart, Huntington, Ind. North Manchester, Ind. Samuel S. Keller, F. R. Hartman, Bourbon, Ind. South Bend, Ind. Levi Winkelbleck, W. H. Johnson, Hartford City, Ind. South Bend, Ind. E. M. Grossnickel, H. V. Wall, North Manchester, Ind. Los Angeles, Cal. C. S. Petry, West Milton, Ohio. There is a small article on this company in BE p 342 which states that it developed the second largest Brethren colony in California at Empire in 1908. Money was used to buy large tracts of land which were parceled out to settlers giving the settlers an advantageous option on land prices. Are there other colonies in California or other states where this company helped settle Brethren? A later effort begun in Canada did not materialize. Where? Jane Davis.
