Is there some where that these forty-two are listed? Is that list available somewhere? Dave Sloan In a message dated 3/28/2011 12:30:33 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: Yes, there were many Brethren families living in Botetourt County prior to 1800. Forty-two heads of German Baptist Brethren families signed a petition, 13 December 1799, seeking exemption from fines for not attending muster. Some lived near Fincastle although most lived closer to Roanoke and Salem. The families were intermarried and quite familiar with one another. Many migrated to Botetourt around 1790 from Eastern Pennsylvania. As far as I know, they did not have an organized church name. You might try going to a library or go through inter-library-loan for a copy of "The Brethren of Botetourt County, Virginia, 1799" and "Brethren Roots of the Botetourt 42" which are back to back articles in BRETHREN ROOTS, Vol. 37, Number 3, Fall 2005, pp. 68-78. The list itself, in clear English, is on page 69. Bear in mind that these were heads of Brethren families that signed the petition. There were many more Brethren in Botetourt that did not sign the petition. A facsimile of the signatures written in the native German is on page 68. But in official county records from 1810s and up, they called themselves "Fraternity of German Baptists", Later, the location name was added (at front or back), and ' Fraternity of ' was dropped, so they were "(Location name) German Baptists" or "German Baptists of (Location name)". Of course, "Church of the Brethren" was officially adopted later. Maybe the Botetourt group used the same or similar naming convention? If I hadn't widened my name search, I never would have found "Fraternity of German Baptists" used in deeds. Whichever ways the "parties" are written in the Deed is how they are indexed. So it might be worth it to check the Botetourt Deeds for entries of "Fraternity of German Baptists", "Botetourt Fraternity of..." or "Fraternity of G.B of Botetourt". Judy
