    1. Re: [BRE] Reference all your help re Francis Stump

    3. RE: Johannes Stump of Philadelphia. When Francis Stump lived in Somerset County he lived near a John Stump. John Stump owned property adjacent John Rhoads of the Rhoads family. Warrant records show a John Stump and a John Stump Jr. holding warrants in Somerset County (circa 1774) a decade before Francis Stump. John Stump is also listed in records related to Harmon Husband in 1774. It is not clear if John Stump and John Stump Jr. is the same person. John Stump's property was between Harmon Husband and John Rhoads. It seems very likely that Francis was related to John Stump considering both have close ties to the Rhoads family. The warrant dates imply that John might be an older brother, or if John Jr. is a son of John, John may even be the father of Francis (pure speculation). Merle listed a reference from Blough's history that Francis Stump was related to Elder Peter Becker. A Stump family lived in Philadelphia County, and one of Becker's daughters married a son of immigrant Johann Julian Stump. Johann Julian also had a son John. However, it has been speculated for some time that this John was the John Stump who lived in Leacock Township, and died around 1748. John of Leacock did not have a son named John. Also, Johann Julian's sons listed in his will do not appear to have a son named John based on their wills. This eastern PA Stump family has other Brethren ties besides Becker. If Francis came from the Philadelphia, it is likely John Stump of Somerset County also did. That bit of information you have on Johannes and Barbara Stump is worth looking into further. Bill Thomas

    3. Evening List, The following item from the May 24, 1887 issue of the Gospel Messenger (page 333) has some intersting facts about the congregation that did not make it into the Southern District of Ohio history written some thirty plus years later. But the article does demonstrate that Eld. J. C. Bright was starting to amass material towards such a history if it was ever written. Wolf Creek Budget. During the year, closing March 1, the Wolf Creek church has increased in number more than in any previous year of its history. We received about thirty-seven by letter and baptism. Love and peace prevail, thanks be to the Lord. Who will give me the biography of the first two elders of the Wolf Creek church-Daniel Cripe and Emmanuel Flory? They both left this district in, or before, 1830. In what year were they elected to the ministry, when ordained, etc.? Was Daniel Cripe the same one who served on the Standing Committee of the Special Meeting of 1848? I will thankfully receive all information relative to these two brethren, and also to the first deacons of this church, as I am preparing a history of it. At our council, April 28, we decided unanimously to organize Sunday-schools at two places - our big house and the Eversole house. The church elected brethren Jacob Hepner and Jacob Kimmel, Superintendents. Our love-feast was held on the evening of May 7. The large room in the big church near Brookville, was crowded with communicants, and some were in the basement story. Nearly 400 communed. This was the first communion service held in this church, in which we "rose from supper," and "washed one another's feet," after the pattern instituted by the Head of the church, in that memorable upper chamber. The order was good; the change gave entire satisfaction, and joy filled our hearts. Many of the dear brethren and sisters enjoyed what they had long looked, waited and labored for, and "thanked God and took courage." Eld. I. J. Rosenberger led in the services, assisted by elders G. Holler, L. West, O. F. Yount and others. The District Meeting of Southern Ohio was held May 10, in the Price's Creek church, Preble Co., O. Twenty-two churches were represented. Bro. John Smith was chosen Moderator; Bro. Jesse Stutzman, Reading Clerk; and Landon West, Writing Clerk. Bro. Jesse Stutzman was appointed as our delegate for the Standing Committee. There were ten queries before the Meeting, mostly of a local character. The mission work received the unanimous encouragement of the meeting. Ministers were instructed to "study" and "read" and "rightly divide." The membership was admonished to give substantial aid in forwarding the good work. We also decided that members who visited saloons should give satisfactory reasons for doing so (if it can be done). We send nothing to the A. M. The atttendance was large and business transacted in a spirit of brotherly love. Bro. Joseph Holder, of North-western Ohio, and Bro. Spitzer, of Indiana, were with us. JOHN CALVIN BRIGHT. 3. Per the Peru Republican--Peru, Indiana Annie M. blocher, wife of Josiah Blocher, was born Mar.7, 1848, in Montgomery County, Ohio. Her parents moved to Miami County, IN. in 1854. She was married to her now bereaved husband Jan. 1, 1868. After a short illness, at her home in this city she passed away on the morning of Sept. 20, 1868, being 20 years, 6 months and 3 days old. She became a member of the United Brethren Church in 1865 and gave satisfactory evidence of entire devotion to Christ. It was not her nature to be demonstrative, but modest and retiring in character, she made no enemies, but bound all who came in contact with her by the silken cords of affection. It was said by those who knew her best that "Annie was always a good dutiful child." As a wife she was all her husband could have desired. To her companion, father, mother, brother and sister, the affliction is a severe one indeed, but they are comforted with the reflection that their loss is her gain. They can unite in these beautiful words. "Peaceful be thy silent slumber, Peaceful in the grave so low, Thou no more wilt join our number, Thou no more our song shall know." "Yet again we hope to greet thee, When the toils of life have fled, Then in heaven with joy to greet thee, Where no farewell tear is shed." --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. 3. thanks - I had a couple differences in the information I had collected - Mary Custer Kessler was sister to my ancestress, Sarah Custer Kern. John Custer (father) died in 1812, living on Duck Creek, near (east of) Sharonville, Hamilton OH (north of Cincinnati). I have that John Custer moved to the Sharonville area about 1805. I had earlier found him living near New Richmond OH - close to the Ohio River, with Elizabeth Houser Custer (mother) moved back among the children at the Obannon Church, and is buried at the Myers (Moyer) Cemetery west of Goshen (1829). Two sons and two daughters (including my Sarah) lived in that area (the Myers Cemetery was not conveniently located to where my Sarah Kern lived - so I suspect at death she was living with either Emanuel Custer, or Elizabeth Custer Frybarger - both of whom are buried at Myers) is there information available on the children of John and Mary (Custer) Kessler - I have information on only 2 of the 10 children in my list. Maria Agnis Matten (List A), and his child? Christopher Gotlip Matter (under age fifteen List A). There is a question whether or not George Adam Martin was on this ship. The Brethren Encyclopedia says that he was born in 1715, which, if true, would put him on the cusp of the few boys under age fifteen who were listed. 3. I suspect this is the minister Jacob Tinkel. His grandson, William Tinkel was a minister and professor of biology, Indiana University among other places. He was retired at the Union Grove Church of the Brethren, Muncie IN. As a young school teacher of science, I had an argument with him about Evolution and the Creation. He was one of the original Creationists in the nation. There was well over a hundred of us eating a church dinner in the basement at Union Grove, and it got absolutely quiet with everyone listening to us I was arguing as a "Theo-Evolutionist" (Genesis tells us the procedure of Evolution). Bro Tinkel made me want to dig a hole in the cement floor and bury myself. "Who do you think you are? to tell God - how He - did His Creation!" I am now for years a Creationist! - in other words - the Bible is Absolutely True! Merle C Rummel > -Brethren Burwick and Tinkel, of Landess, Ind., visited the Brethren near Sycamore, Howard Co., Ind., Jan. 14, and preached for them in the Honey Creek school-house until the 16th. The house was crowded. The Brethren will build a meeting-house the coming summer. So reports Bro. S. L. Burwick. >
