    3. Mary Elizabeth, The only Stump's I am familiar with are the descendents of Solomon and Samuel Stump in Ohio and Nebraska. I do have a Mary Elizabeth and a Francis, children of Solomon. I know nothing about the Rhoads brethren. The only Francis in the BE is the one that went to Kentucky, and I have no access to the Monitor. 3. Pat and others, When you know it's in the Brethren archives, but have no idea where to begin searching the chronological list (which is the one we mention below), RootsWeb provides another way to search: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search?path=BRETHREN This gives options for subject, address of original poster, and approximate dates, as well as a link to use for keywords. I generally use the index version, but have found this one useful for broad topics, such as "love feast," "Shively" or "Kentucky" for example. 3. I have several Bolender/Shenkle papers - The Shinkle Family 1897 (additions by Elbert Newhouse - 1983) Harold Miller papers on both Bolender and Shinkle K Merrill Bolender's book - Shaking the Branches (also - stated that there is a microfiche on the Shinkle Family at the Library in Cincinnati) I do not have the name of Elizabeth (Betsy) Kellum Fitterman's first husband (it could also be Fetterman - from 2 different papers) she was the sister of Thomas Kellum [wife: Elizabeth Shinkle - sister of Stephen Bolender's first wife - Margreta Shinkle] It states that Betsy was 26 years old when she married Stephen Bolender (Brethren preacher) (m. 19 Aug 1811) He was 55 years, and together they had 5 children. (names given) (Stephen had 11 children by his first wife) Stephen died 5 months after the youngest (Mary A) -1820 (Betsy lived 41 more years) Stephen's will gives Betsy right to live on the "plantation" for her life (1342 Acres - 3 miles NE of Felicity OH), but at death, her will, she was living in Brown County - and gave her property to her daughter Mary Ann Kellum now her daughter - Mary A Bolender - married John B Young - so I don't know who Mary Ann Kellum was - she was not a Fitterman Shinkle Family paper says that Thomas Kellum came to Ohio when he was 20, with a brother and family. That the father died when Thomas was young. They were from Eastern Shore Maryland. Thomas lived at Feesburg OH The Bolenders and Shinkles had moved from Berks County to Northumberland Co PA - to Penns Creek, Brush Valley, now the eastern part of Centre Co PA, I do not live down in Clermont County -to be able to check the Genealogy section at the Batavia Library. I did get my first information on the family there. The Benton Christian Chapel Cemetery is where Stephen is buried (on his farm), although he died before the Benton Chapel was built. The Olive Branch Christian Church seems to have been the original Bullskin Brethren Church (2-3 miles SE of Felicity OH) the Bullskin Brethren Church was "expelled" (their term) by Annual Meeting I do not have any information on the name Fitterman. 3. Andrew, glad you're on the line with the rest of us historians! Yes, your g. grandfather, B. E. Kesler started the Bible Monitor Movement in 1922 and helped to start the Dunkard Brethren Church in 1926. I have done some research on Kesler but you might already have it. The Brethren Encyclopedia has a nice write up on him. If you don't have a way of access to the B. Enc. write me "off-line" and I'll try to help. Another event coming up, hopefully by June of this year, is a new book printed about the "DUNKARD BRETHREN". I understand that the author of that book has one entire chapter dedicated to B. E. Kesler. Hopefully you will gain much from that book whenever it is available. If I can be of help, let me know Shirley Frick

    3. The interchange re Benjamin Elias Kesler, son of Stephen & Sophia Sink, of Wirtz, Franklin Co, VA, was of interest to me as I knew of his brother, Samuel L. Kesler b. 1885, d. 1954 & wife Martha Jane Ingram, who came to Colorado in 1910 looking for a homestead. Homesteads were all taken so they rented initially, then bought land north of River Bend, Elbert Co, CO and land west of of River Bend where they lived until 1936, when they moved to Limon, Lincoln Co, CO. Samuel Keslers had 6 children. Lincoln Co, Colorado is where I was raised, and while I did not know the Kesler's personally I am certain my grdparents did. This information came from "Where the Wagons Rolled" - The History of Lincoln Co and people who came before 1925 - compiled by the Lincoln Co. Historical Society Mary Ann Rhodes <milrho@bellsouth.net> wrote: Andrew, I have your grandfather in my file because of your Half Grandaunt Pearl's marriage to William Henry Beachel the son of Emerson Henry Beachel and Katherine May Nedrow related to Elder Henry Meyers. Elder Benjamin Elias Kesler, Sr. son of Stephen Kesler and Sophia Sink, born 06 Mar 1951 in Franklin Co., VA and died 01 Aug 1952 in Goshen at age 91. Most of what I have is from a very long article about his Brethren and Dunkard work and the census. There also is a photo of Elder B.E.in the Brethren Encyclopedia. In 1900, lived at Union, Greene Co., Arkansas with wife Mattie L.; 5 children. Mattie was the mother of 5, all living. He was a minister In 1910, lived in Precinct 5, Elbert, Colorado with wife M.L. and 4 children. Mattie was the mother of 11 children, 4 living. He was farming on a homestead. Daughter Pearl and son-in-law Henry lived on the same land. In 1920, lived in Poplar Bluff, Butler Co., Missouri with wife Lulu M. and son Maury, step-son of Lulu. He was a minister and pastor. At the time of daughter Pearl's death in 1927 was still in Poplar Bluff. After 1937, Benjamin lived in Goshen, Elkhart Co., IN. "The Goshen Indiana Dunkard Brethren Congregation was organized on Nov 30, 1926 by a group of 15 members with Leander P. Kurtz as presiding elder. Over the years, several ministers moved into the vicinity. Elder B. E. Kesler spent his last years here after 1937." In 1885, married Mattie Laura Hurt, Born 12 Oct 1862. 11 children In next married Lulu Matilda Thurman She had a son Benjamin Elias, Jr. born 13 Aug 1920 in Poplar Bluff, Butler co., MO. Died Apr 1981 in Goshen. I do not have his wife. I presume it is Mariam. >From your message; Jr. had Steven who had Andrew? I can not attach to this. If you would like what I have with the sources, let me know. Mary Ann Rhodes

    3. Andrew, Sorry, the date of B.E., Sr's birth is 1861. Was late lst night when I typed the response. There is a reference to him in the Brethren Encyclopedia; The Monitor (Sep 1, 1952) that may be his obituary. The day of his death? Someone on this list may be able to find that for you. There are also references to Brethren books; S. Missouri Arkansas (1964) pages 189, 208, 247-52; S. Illinois (1950) pages 240-241; Colorado (1963) page 54; N.Missouri (1945) page 142; and N. Illinois (1941) page 110, Kansas (1922) pages 179, 240. These books have been a great help to me for my "elders and ministers." They can be obtained from your library form inter loan. They normally come from one of the Brethren libraries with no cost.
