    3. Bro. Wm. M. Lyon's address is now Union Bridge, Md., where his correspondents should address him. Two were added to the Beach Grove church, Madison Co., Ind., recently, by baptism. So Bro. D. R. Richards informs us. Bro. D. C. Moomaw reports a good meeting at the Valley church, Botetourt Co., Va. Hope we shall have a full report of the meeting soon. The General Missionary Committee meets in Mt. Morris on Tuesday, Jan. 4th, 1887. Considerable business will come before the Committee. Bro. Hope is at this time laboring for the Brethren at Ames, Iowa. He will remain there several months, and may be addressed at that place until March 1, 1887. >From Three Oaks, Mich., we have a letter, containing money for an Almanac. The writer failed to sign his name, and will have to do without the Almanac until he sends his name. Just now our office is crowded with work. Bro. Amich works far into the night, and yet the letters accumulat on his hands. Our brethren will please have patience, and all will receive attention in due season. (Note from Wayne: Sounds like Bro. Amick and I share a lot in common for the exception he did it without a computer ) Bro. J. C. Murray is expected to begin a series of meetings at the Silver Creek meeting-house near this place on the 25th inst. (NOTE: Illinois) Bro. Elias Mongold, of Strickler, Washington Co., Ark., would like to hear from his brothers and sisters in the flesh. He had lost all track of them. If any should read this notice, they will please address Bro. M. as above. Bro. Jas. R. Gish, writing from Stutthart, Ark., Dec. 17, says: "Jst returned from Fairmount, where we had six meetings. Attendance was fair and attention good. Found the people friendly and sociale. In the vicinity of this place we expect to form our settlement of Brethren. It is about six miles from the railroad. The town is just starting, with a railroad graded, which, it is thought, will soon be finished." We have the following good news from Bro. J. C. Murrary, of North Manchester, Ind. He says, "We closed our meetings at Edna Mills, Dec. 17, with thirteen additions by baptism. When we commenced our meeting at this place, there were fightings without and fears within, but, blessed be the name of the Lord, he has triumphed gloriously and his name was honored with the above results. Came home to rest and have commenced meetings in our own congregation." May the Lord bless his labors! Bro. S. W. Hoover, of Dayton, O., spent a few days with us, recently, looking up the interest of the Tract Work, of which he is Foreman. Bro. Hoover is full of seal for the work, and has the energy and push to make things move. He left Mt. Morris with a substantial reminder that the brethren here are ready and willing to assist in the good work of spreading te gospel. During his stay with us he preached once at the Silver Creek meeting-house, and twice in the College Chapel. We were all sorry that his stay was so short. Come again, Bro. S. W. By request we publish the address of the Treasurers of the General Mission Board and of the Brethren's Tract Work. All money for the Tract Work should be sent to J. A. Hepner, Treasurer, Dayton, Ohio. Money for Home and Foreign Missions and for building meeting-houses, should be sent to D. L. Miller, Treasurer, Mt. Morris, Ill. Please keep this notice for future reference. Wanye Webb Editor: Brethren Roots

    1. [BRE] The Other Becker-Stump Marriage
    2. Dwayne Wrightsman
    3. THE OTHER BECKER-STUMP MARRIAGE: The Becker-Stump marriage that most of us have heard of is that of Elizabeth Becker (daughter of Elder Peter Becker) and Jacob Stump (son of Julian Stump and his second wife Maria). The Beckers and the Stumps were Brethren together in Düdelsheim from 1711, and emigrated together from Krefeld in 1719 with the first major wave of Brethren. The other Becker-Stump marriage that most of us have not heard of is that of Maria Catharina Becker (brother of Valentine Becker who emigrated with Alexander Mack in 1729) and John Stump (oldest son of Julian Stump and his first wife Elizabeth, and therefore half-brother of Jacob Stump). This marriage took place November 11, 1726, Christ Church, Philadelphia. Because Maria Catharina [Becker] Stump arrived in the new world some years earlier than her brother, Valentin Becker, and because her marriage to John Stump caused quite a stir with Conrad Beissel for "having married too near a relation," I believe that Maria Catharina [Becker] Stump was part of the Becker-Stump contingent that came over in 1719. Valentine Becker was a young man who was left behind in Krefeld. He married Stintgen Frantzen, October 23, 1723, Evangelisch, Krefeld. Stingen's name was spelled "Stinkee" on the Ship Allen list in 1729. Actually Stintgen ("Stinkee") is the equivalent of Christine or Christina. Having established that Valentine Becker and Maria Catharina [Becker] Stump were siblings, there remains the task of ascertaining their parentage. I suspect that they were from the Marienborn, Düdelsheim, Stockheim area in Hessen. I also suspect that they were fairly closely related to Elder Peter Becker. Despite Peter Becker's famous name, we still don't know about his birth family. Dwayne Wrightsman

    3. My Brethren ancestors were not from Kentucky, they landed in Kansas, Indiana, Ill, Mich, etc. I knew from early on that my mother's mother who died when she was 13, was Brethren. I didn't fully understand as a child what that meant. When I started doing genealogy in the early 80's I was shocked to find out how many Brethren ancestors I had on both my mother's and father's side. I wonder how many others today are in the same condition of being totally unknowing about their roots. I have learned to keep my thought to myself when I meet an obviously Brethren (to me) name, because if I ask they just do a sort of double take and said "Huh?" When you consider the normal migrations of families and then what was really a great diaspora of families in WWII there are thousands of descendants of Brethren who have no notion of their ancestors religion or way of life. I find this Brethren list a wonderful was to catch up on my history. Merle, you in particular, have really opened up a lot of history and put it online for us. 2. The Bible Monitor began publication in October, 1922. It was edited by B.E.Kesler of Poplar Bluff, MO. It was way too late to record any information concerning the Francis Stump family of Kentucky. The connection of the Stump family with the Monitor is through the Clarence Stump family of IN and PA. For several years, a son, Paul Stump, of Englewood, OH has been the chairman of the Publication Board of the Dunkard Brethren Church, which has oversight over the Bible Monitor. The Editors of the Bible Monitor have been B.E.Kesler, 1922-1932; L.W.Beery, 1932-1946; Howard J. 3. Janet, I have found in recent years (through genealogical research) that some of my own family was with the Brethren faith. I was reared in the Baptist Church and now attend the Methodist. That is primarily because it is the one in the area (as you say--we are rural). I live in MO and your email intrigues me. I have been looking to see if my Tucker family may not also have had Brethren roots. Have you encountered any members of the Brethren Church by the name of Tucker? Any help sincerely appreciated. 3. Hello Merle, I've just read your e-mail, Reference your research "earliest Kentucky." 1. I have collateral lines in Cape Gireadeau, Mo. which may help other researchers. 2. Do you know surnames of families "refused" by "Annual Meeting"? 3. Since I "wandered" around before contact with your Brethren records, I have found Francis Stump records very sparse, but I do have documented Francis Stump records in Bedford, Fayette and Somerset Counties, Pennsylvania. I have very clear Stump records from my husband and his ancestors back to about the 1880s - including Francis (The Elder) - land transactions and his will - after that they have all been Methodist. So far, 1. No record of his marriage to Rachel Martin, but it does seem to be generally accepted. Do have copy of her marriage (after Francis death) to Philip Kimmel. 2. No official record of David Washabaugh's name change to David Stump, but do have record of his marriage - 1811 - as David Stump - to Catharine Ripple. Do have many records of her Ripple family. David and Catharine Ripple Stump had a son, named Francis. No record of his marriage, but census records show him with a 5-year old son, emigrating to Edgar County, Ill. No record of a mother of that son. Record in Edgar County, Ill. of that Francis' marriage to a Penelope Wood. Complete records of their children down to my son - last male of the line. I have set out the gist of my husband's earliest ancestors. If you have any comments, I will appreciate them. 1. [BRE] Early brethren in Cape Girardeua & Bollinger Co's. MO
    2. Here is a little some out of the Gospel Messenger. Ira P. Eby sure walk a fair distance to get this information. Dennis Roth Olympia, Wash The Gospel Messenger Nov. 29, 1902 page 765 Vol. 40 No. 48 What I found in the Cape Girardeau and Bollinger Counties, Missouri Nov. 7 I left home for Cape Girardeau, Mo.; stayed that night with wife and daughter who are attending the State Normal. Saturday I went on my search for lost but not forgotten sheep of our Brotherhood that wandered here as early as 1800. Judge Frank Williams of the Cape said he attended their meetings when he was a small boy. He is now 78. While the name “Dunkard” is familiar with the old people, all else concerning them is as a dream. The doctrine is lost. Trine immersion is known but the why is lost. Having obtained the name of Judge Andrew Miller, of Millerville, I left Cape for Jackson by hack – distance of ten miles. The next day being Sunday and no hack running. I was on my way by daylight with lunch in hand. I walked ten miles to Millersville, found Andrew Miller, son of John Miller, who came to Cape County over one hundred years ago. Andrew was born in 1825; was a member of the Brethren church at one time and is the only one living there that had ever been a member in this county. About 1850 the Universalists came in and swept the country and flourished for fifteen or twenty years; the Spiritualists came in and the two have joined together and are doing some work, but are not as strong as a few years ago. Old Bro. Andrew spoke of Eld. Geo. Wolf, David and Peter Wygle who went to Illinois. Daniel Hendricks who went to Jasper County, Missouri, and James Hendricks who died and is buried here. Monday morning I left for Lutesvlle, twenty miles away. I walked twenty-five miles by the time I reached the home of Henry Winters, where I received a most cordial welcome. Henry is a son-in-law of Jesse Lutz, whose father and mother were members. His father, Jacob Lutz, was about eight years old when they came to Missouri. Jacob married Sophia Lorrance. Five of their children are living, ranging in age from forty-eight to seventy-four years. Here also I found Bakers, Myers, Rhodes, Decks, Berry, Marricks, Drums, Scrums, Hahn’s, Wygles, Crites, Welties and Youngs. Many, many are the great-great-grandchildren. Was there ever a call for Macedonia? There is one from here. Did the eunuch need a Philip, so does this place. Great monuments of cold marble have been erected in honor of men of war, but O! my brother, here is needed a monument of sacrifice and love for these children, in honor to their great-great-grandfathers who were soldiers of the cross of Christ. Who is ready to help build? Do not delay. The county is full of old people. Soon they will all be gone, and it will be much harder to begin the work. Cape Girardeau and Bollinger Counties have excellent opportunities the Brethren of limited means, and if old people are any index of the healthfulness of a country, it is surely healthful here, for there are so very many old people. I saw the house where Brethren John Miller and James Hendricks preached and where they held their feasts, and also the place where they baptized. How sacred these places seemed to me, and as I walked where these old soldiers of the cross walked I wept and prayed. Lutesville is 133 miles form St. Louis on the Belmont Branch of the Iron Mountain R. R.; has about six or seven hundred inhabitants. Just one six is Marble Hill, the county seat of Bollinger County, with about the same number of inhabitants. The Mayfield Smith Academy controlled by the Missionary Baptists, is located here. I returned Wednesday. May the Lord add the Blessing. Ira P. Eby. **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living.
