My ancestors came to America before the American Revolution, and my father remembers family members speaking German. A 1940 article on one relative notes she didn't learn English until she was in her late teens. They were Mennonites, but even today, Amish still speak German, and most of their roots go back to the 1740's. German Baptist's held church services exclusively in German until the mid 1820's, almost 100 years after they came to America. Thanks Bill: The Newcomer and Newmyer names seem to be fairly distinct, and I haven't run into any records where variations on the names would be confused. I have also run into connections between the two families. I have one Peter Newcomer, born 1753 in Manor Twp, Lancaster Co, PA. He was Mennonite, and later settled in Tyrone Twp, Fayette Co, PA. His son Christian, married about 1814 to Mary Newmyer, who was the granddaughter of Jacob. Based on proximity, I'd imagine Wolf and Peter were probably related. Nancee Seifert Would you please send me information on the John Gaby family -and the children. Are you indicating that he is a nephew of Salome (son of Martin Gaby JR) - and about her age? I have him born about 1781 -which is the same year of Salome's birth (25 May 1781 Oley, Berks Co PA) Salome Gaby (wife of Daniel Fiant) was the youngest daughter of Elder Martin Gaby of the Oley Church. In 1802, right after their marriage, they moved to "Fiants Ford", over the Whitewater River, near Yankeetown, in Union Co IN (then Indiana Territory - outside of the Gore - or in squatter country). About 1834 they moved west into Fayette County, Waterloo twp, where the New Bethel Church was established (a later building on their property), and were buried on the back of their farm. Sometime about 1813, a John Gaby, wife Hannah (born c1789), is found living adjacent them. I find him listed in the 1820 census. It lists one son and seven daughters. I have only the names of Susannah (1802-1883) who married 1825, Richard Strong MD, Lydia (c1804-) who married 1821, David Stevenson, and Rachel (c1808-) who married 1829, Henry Hubbard. All these are in Fayette County IN - adjacent to the Fiants. The only child I have incomplete information on is Susannah- with twelve children (I found nothing on any other children) . I have been to the Strong homestead property in Fayette Co. Supposedly they were buried on family farm "Strong Cemetery", but recently I found a stone to a Richard Strong at the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, south of Springersville - several miles south of their farm. It was cold/snowy -and I did not record any information from the latter stone (am going back when possible). Since Henry Hubbard was a prominent historical figure in the Whiskey Rebellion in Somerset County PA - who is this Henry Hubbard? and where did he go after he got married? - he did not remain in Fayette County -according to the informations I looked at. These are all part of the early Four Mile Church - and I am attempting to complete information on the church families. Merle C Rummel > Hi Nancy: I am a descendant of MARTIN GABY, Jr. -- to JOHN GABY -- to > SUSANNAH GABY who married RICHARD STRONG. > They were Old German Baptist Brethren. >
I looked through my Stoner genealogy papers and only found 2 Michaels. One was Michael Stoner (1774-1853), son of Abraham Stoner (1745-1824) and Mary Ann Miller (1741- ), and married to Elizabeth Snively in Washington County, Maryland (2 Jul 1799). Have no idea if this is the same one or not. I don't have any other information about him. However, this one might be the same one as in the 1850 Waynesboro PA census. The other Michael C. Stoner wasn't born until 1828 - 1910. Michael doesn't seem to be a popular Stoner name. Now Abraham or Solomon or Jacob... John Hardin. When I read this I remembered the song that was posted and found the above message and thought I should type it out as there was some interest. Robin Poeschek Kamloops BC Info on Michael Stoner - from “A History of Shenandoah County” page 647 + 648 (accessed through ancestry): Stoner, Bush Michael Stoner (1748 – 1815), great hunter and pioneer, born in Pennsylvania, was a “cousin” of the Harmons, originally of Shenandoah. There is some evidence he resided for a time in this county. The published statement he was a relative of Daniel Boone is probably untrue. It is stated his name was originally Holsteiner and that he was son of a Palatinate. He may have been a nephew or relative of Henry Holston (Holstein), from whom Holston river probably derives its name. Michael Stoner went to New River, Va., about 1765 – 1766, and there for the first time met Daniel Boone. Stoner and James Harrod went from Fort Pitt down the Ohio, crossed Kentucky to the Cumberland and Stone river and there met the Isaac Lindsey expedition from South Carolina, 1767; conducted Daniel Boone as far as Crab Orchard, Ky.,1769; went with Boone from Virginia to the Falls of the Ohio, with dispatches from the Virginia government, warning Col. John Floyd of Indian hostilities, 1774; marked with Daniel Boone the road to Boonesboro, 1775; met Simon Kenton in northern Kentucky and conducted him to Boonesboro, 1775; raised corn on Stoner’s branch, Bourbon county, Ky., 1776; was wounded in one of the Boonesboro sieges, 1777 – 1778; present at taking of Vincennes, 1778; at King’s Mountain, 1780; at Blue Licks, 1782; “out” with Gen. Benj. Logan, 1786; and “out” with Col. John Hardin. Col. Daniel Boone about 1809 sent for Stoner to visit the former in Missouri. They started up the Missouri river, hunting and trapping, but Boone at the end of a hundred miles was forced through illness to return. Stoner continued up the river about 1700 miles and was thus one of its first explorers. He returned to Wayne county, Ky. He married Frances, daughter of Rev. Andrew Tribble, and they had Dr. Michael Lower Stoner, member of the constitutional convention of Kentucky. The Stoners of Montgomery county, Ky.,are descendants of Michael Stoner. Among them was Maj. Robert G. Stoner, who joined his battalion, with that of Col. Wm. C.P. Breckinridge, to form the 9th Ky. Cavalry, C.S.A. Michael Stoner’s wife’s mother, a Miss Burrows, was sister of Frances Burrows, wife of Captain “Billy” Bush. Captain “Billy” Bush, born 1747, went to Kentucky, 1778; returned to Clinch river, 1774; went to Kentucky again, 1775; helped build Boonesboro, first fort in Kentucky, 1775; raised corn in now Clark County, Ky., in the heart of the Blue Grass, 1776; and founded Bush’s Station or Bush’s Settlement, first permanent occupation of Clark county.
