Website says Gene Andert is in charge, but months ago I tried to contact him since he had some of my Arnold relatives on his website and they needed updating. He finally wrote once that 'I have no more time for genealogy'(still has the big website up though). Is this Listserv not active? Who would I write to for more information who is active in doing searches in Kosciusko, as nobody has responeded on their Gen Web Site. RW has mailing Lists rather than Listservs. If the person is a List Owner over a List, they also should not respond negatively to inquiries about the List. James was minister of the Cape Girardeau MO church. Elder John Hendricks had a son William (married Elizabeth Shell in 1833, moved to Sangamon Co IL. So, your William W Henricks is not the son of Elder John. But I have also in Warren Co KY, a Thomas Hendricks, who lives close to Elder John. Thomas Jr (a son) went to Nashville (Davidson Co TN), then Thomas III went to Morgan Co Indiana - but I do not have much information on these families. From the Carolinas I only have a John Hendricks (Elder John -to Lick Branch of Drakes Creek -then Warren Co, later Simpson Co KY) and a James Hendricks (who I am sure is the James of the Hinkston Creek Church, Montgomery Co KY). So I do not know if Thomas is another brother. I do not have much information on the family of James Hendricks, probably the parent of these Elder John and James - this James Sr came down from York Co PA, to Dutchmans Creek, Forks of the Yadkin, Rowan Co NC, 1775. He is recorded as a wheelwright (made wagon wheels). But a James Hendricks (same one or other?) also purchased 349 acres on Middle Crane Creek (east of Salsbury NC - west of the Yadkin). He may also be the James Henrick mentioned by Morgan Edwards in 1770 as a minister at the Little Conewago Congregation. Be aware that the names John and James are common in every generation of the Hendricks family - so which one is a person talking about? The first settler west of the Susquehanna River was a John Hendricks, who moved there in 1728. His son James joined him in 1731, then was accidentally killed by his father in 1732. Michael Danner bought land from him. Ferne Baldwin indicated that the family went back to a Gerhard Hendricks, wife May and daughter Sarah, who arrived in America in 1685 from Krisheim Germany (a Brethren Settlement -amidst Mennonites - but the 1685 migration was a Mennonite migration, not Brethren). . Do you have information on Samuel Sears (1769-1846, wife Christina ?Conrad) and family? He is a son of Johann Zaher and Barbara (Miller) Hon (second wife). And Dwayne, you mentioned Daniel and Betty Martin Sears -yes, Pamela is helping me on these Sears families -but so far I only have partial information on the John Sears family. Merle C Rummel

The Samuel Sears family, including that of daughter Susan and her husband William Hendricks, moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, near the end of the 1820s. In 1830, the family members started buying land in Scottville Township (Sections 20, 21, 28, 29) in Macoupin County, Illinois, and by 1835, all of the extended family were living in Macoupin. In 1836, the family started moving out of Macoupin and into the State of Iowa. William and Susan Hendricks and Samuel and Christina Sears did not move to Iowa until 1843. William Hendricks died during the move and was buried in Hoover Cemetery of Franklin Township, Lee County, Iowa. His widow and children settled in Polk and Decatur Counties in Iowa. The parents of William Hendricks are unknown to me, but I, too, suspect that he was somehow related to Elder John Hendricks. I don't have John Hendricks, but have wondered if he might be next in my family tree--no proof though. My line ends at William W. Hendricks, born 1788 in North Carolina. He married Susannah Sears (daughter of Samuel and Christena Sears) on 21 Oct 1817 in Russellville, Logan County, Kentucky, and started their family in what soon became Simpson County, Kentucky. The family, including Susannah's parents, moved to Macoupin County, Illinois (probably Scottville), between 1825 and 1829, then on to Polk and Decatur Counties, Iowa about 1845. One of the children in this family was Daniel Wesley Hendricks who was received in Carroll County, Iowa (by letter from the Prairie City Church) in the spring of 1880. As I said, I have no idea if this family is related directly to Elder John Hendricks, but would certainly not be disappointed to find out. Bill, Nicholas Gerst Jr. and Frederick Gerst were two of the sons of Nicholas Gerst. They were born into a Brethren family as Nicholas Gerst switched from Reformed to Brethren soon after settling in Bethel Township at age 22. I presume he became Brethren due to the Brethren influence in his life, e.g., marriage, etc. Dewalt Gerst was a younger brother of Nicholas Gerst who remained Reformed until after their father Theobald died in 1770. Dewalt had many children and only those born before 1770 were baptized as infants in the Reformed Church. I think Dewalt's Reformed affiliation ended with the death of his father. Dwayne: The 1777 non-associator listing for Bethel Township, Lancaster County included Dewalt Gerst, Nicholas Gerst, Nicholas Gerst Jr., and Frederick Gerst. This implies they were likely German Baptist or Mennonite. To a lesser degree they could have been Quaker or Loyalist to be on this list. Donnel's Creek was where the Christian and Mary [Garst] Frantz and the Daniel and Anna [Garst] Frantz had settled and where many of their Frantz descendants lived over the years. Mary and Anna were daughters of John Nicholas Garst. On page 174 of his book, Flory wrote the following about the wife of John Nicholas Garst. "John Nicholas, Sr., the father of the Garst sisters, was born in Germany in the year 1725. He arrived in Philadelphia in the year 1749 to search out and find a location for settlement. The following year his father, Theobold, mother Magdalene, one brother Dewald and five sisters, the youngest at the time being eleven years of age, sailed to America on the ship 'Isaac.' They landed at the city of 'Brotherly Love' and upon their arrival they soon settled in Bethel Township, Lancaster County, on land son John Nicholas had selected for the family. They settled in a community of German families, many of which were of the Brethren faith. SOON AFTER THE ARRIVAL OF THE FAMILY HE WAS MARRIED TO THE DAUGHTER OF A NEIGHBOR BRETHREN FAMILY AND SOON UNITED WITH THAT FAITH." Michael Frantz of Little Swatara was the same age as John Nicholas Garst and had no children. He did, however, have a sister, Elizabeth, who was two years younger than John Nicholas Garst. I never knew him, but had heard of him, and do use his Lest I Forget Vol 3 - on the Kentucky Churches (The Brush Creek Church [Strait Creek Church] there at Sinking Spring is where John Countryman came in 1797). Where did Rolland Flory get his information? I can assume he did a lot of traveling down into Kentucky. After he died, I did some checking about his records. There are none. But I am finding that his information is pretty accurate. The statement given to me by the President at Manchester College was that while he didn't footnote - he referenced most of his statements in his work. That is partially true (but there are so many times I wish I knew where he got certain informations). And you know - I'm not going to do a lot better. Do I footnote every statement I make? I can give major sources, and do give specific references, but there are so many pieces of information that I really am not going to footnoted every couple lines clear through my whole book!!! In a way, its like Jesus says in the Bible - The Jewish Scribes proved their accuracy by giving all the references ("Rabbi Gamalial says that Rabbi Lemuel said that - - ") - yet Jesus "taught with Authority" - and - "I say unto you - - " Merle C Rummel

In 1973, Rolland F. Flory, who was a Brethren minister at Donnel's Creek Church, Clark County, Ohio, wrote a book entitled "Lest We Forget and Tales of Yester-Years." Donnel's Creek was where the Christian and Mary [Garst] Frantz and the Daniel and Anna [Garst] Frantz had settled and where many of their Frantz descendants lived over the years. SOON AFTER THE ARRIVAL OF THE FAMILY HE WAS MARRIED TO THE DAUGHTER OF A NEIGHBOR BRETHREN FAMILY AND SOON UNITED WITH THAT FAITH." (all-caps mine) One wonders where Flory got this information, but, assuming he is correct, we know that John Nicholas Garst's closest Brethren neighbor was Michael Frantz of Little Swatara, whose first cousin, Michael Frantz II of Cocalico, was the father of the four Frantz brothers who married the four Garst sisters. Michael Frantz of Little Swatara was the same age as John Nicholas Garst and had no children. He did, however, have a sister, Elizabeth, who was two years younger than John Nicholas Garst. She is the most likely candidate to have been the wife of John Nicholas Garst. Dwayne Wrightsman

Elizabeth Landes, wife of John Fosher, was the daughter of Henry Landes (1760-1834) - her mother was Susannah - but I have only Susannah's given name. John and Elizabeth Fosher wer part of the migration to Putnam Co IN - the Ladoga Churches, about 1825. Elizabeth died in 1833. John Fosher was a son of Daniel Fosher (1762-1849) and Marillis Eckel (1764-1832) - these then would be John's sisters? - he had six of them (there were 4 boys). Susannah Fosher married Joseph Pagin (of Fort Kaskaskia IL) and went to South Bend IN. Mary Fosher married John Hale and went to Putnam County. Elizaabeth Fosher died at 7 years old - in Virginia. Catherine Fosher married Stephen Hicks and stayed in Virginia. Saloma Fosher married John Drook, and went to Grant Co IN. Anna Fosher married William Stanton and went to South Bend IN. Are these the "Fosher Girls"? Merle C Rummel
