    1. [BRE] Jacob Mack m. Hannah Engelhard, 1752
    2. I was doing some research in Philadelphia Co., PA records and came across the following marriage. I had no idea that Jacob Mack, grandson of Alexander Mack (b. 1679), had belonged to a non-Brethren church. Rev. Ankrum says nothing about this in "Alexander Mack the Tunker and Descendants" but he has the same marriage date so he must have been aware of this record. Makes me wonder if some of the Mack children from this marriage were baptized in this church. Those records weren't available on this website but I may be able to find them in our downtown library. 1. [BRE] Peter Eichenberg and the Graffs
    2. Dwayne Wrightsman
    3. I have been told by Debby Bliss that several of you are interested in the family of the wife of Peter Eichenberg. Debby told me that Peter was married to a Fronica Groff and asked me if I knew which Graff/Groff family that would be. Well, I think I have stumbled onto that family in my search for the family of my own Jacob Graff/Grove of NC. I discovered that my Jacob Grove of NC was most likely the son of Jacob Graff of East Cocalico, Lancaster County, and member of the Ephrata Society located in Cocalico Township before Ephrata became its own township. Jacob Graff/Groff died May 6, 1776, according to both the Ephrata Death Register and according to Lancaster County Probate Court. I found an abstract of his probated will on the Internet and it says that Peter "Echenberger" was an executor of the will of Jacob Graff/Groff. Often when a son is not named as executor the job falls on a son-in-law, which would be the case if Fronica Groff was a daughter of the deceased. Unfortunately, the abstract says that the children of the deceased were not named in the will itself. I have sent away for a copy of the will and related estate papers to see what I can find because my own Jacob Grove of NC would have been one of the children as well. Land and tax records of Cocalico Township indicate that a Peter Eichenberg was a close neighbor to the deceased and was the right age to have married a daughter of the deceased, so I think it is a match. If it's not, it sure is a strange coincidence. Incidentally, quite a few of Fronica Graff's parents and grandparents and uncles and aunts and brothers and sisters were members of the Ephrata Society with death dates and relationships given in the Ephrata Register, assuming that Fronica was the daughter of Jacob Graff (died May 6,1776). 1. [BRE] Jacob Puderbaugh
    2. Interesting. In the Jefferson County Genealogical Society's tombstone inscription book, "Tombstone Inscriptions and Burials, Jefferson County, Kansas, 1854-1986," I find a burial record for Jacob Puderbaugh with apparently matching dates in Jefferson County, KS: Puderbaugh, Jacob, 5 Feb 1788 - 11 April 1865 OZWK indicating that he is buried in Ozawkie Cemetery. However, while there are many listings for Puderbaughs in Ozawkie cemetery, I did not find a listing for Rebecca or for Catherine. No other Jacobs. I haven't been following the stuff about Richard Roe, so I don't know the names involved other than Puderbaugh. However, there is a listing for Mary Rowe [sic], which says "See Puderbaugh, OZWK" There are a few listings for ROE, one for ROW, and perhaps 10 for ROWE. Might any of these be relevant? In the same society's marriage book, I didn't find anything that seemed to fit. Jan T **************Need a new ride? Check out the largest site for U.S. used car listings at AOL Autos. 3. After reading this, I find that some link Catherine Puterbaugh to Jacob Puderbaugh (1788-1865) and Magdalene Schlechty (1789-1831) as her parents. Citing Marie Good's work. Are there two Catherines then? One with parents of Jacob and Magdalene and another with parents of Jacob Puterbaugh (1805-1835) and Rebecca Noffsinger? And, if there are two Catherine's, then who did Catherine Puderbaugh, daughter of Jacob and Magdalene, marry? 3. Some time ago the name of the Minister, Samuel Danner, of Muhlenberg Co KY, was brought up. Brethren Roots and Branches (predecessor of our current Brethren Roots) of 1987 (Spring-Summer and Fall-Winter) had two discussions on the Sauer Bible owned by Samuel Danner Sr (son of Jacob Danner - grandson of Michael Danner), father of the minister Samuel Danner. This was the family records of the birth and marriages of Samuel SR Family (did not include deaths). The second presentation included the children and spouses of Samuel JR - and a partial list of grandchildren. The Bible is at the Duggan Library, Hanover College, Hanover IN. The records are in German -from the sequence of names - the Bible was passed down for 3 generations. There was no indication of the location of any person mentioned - but I suspect, since it was given to Hanover College, here in southern Indiana, that the Glenroi Danner who donated the Bible in 1981 was a descendant of the family, and one of those who had moved from Muhlenberg Co KY north across the Ohio River to Indiana (usually around Evansville -while many moved north into Illinois [Adams County] - I am finding that a number of the Muhlenberg family descendants did go to Indiana). 3. Merle, I'm still wondering if you received the packet of items I mailed you quite a while back? You and the e-mails I read ref. trying to complete my husband's Francis Stump-David Washabaugh line were helful and I tried to return the courtesy. May I have your response? However, I think this may mean something to you. I have just cleared - page-by-page - of the last file binder of my husband's which he had labeled: "Census Records." This contained, not only hand-written census records from microfilm on STUMP. but literally jillions of what he must have considered "collateral" family names. Only thing that may interest you was a pencilled note "History of HAZELCREEK Baptist Church" and a film number -- 0156901 item 2. I'm guessing this is something from the Salt Lake City Library, but nothing else identifying except it was stuck to a census record on Muhlenberg County KY. I seem to remember some of the messages mentioned some Brethren had sort of moved over to Baptist churches in some places. Did you receive the package of snail mail I sent sometime back? 1. [BRE] Biography of Ezekiel Roe
    2. This is from the INWELLS site. They have been posting a lot of biography's the last couple of weeks and there are two other Roe biography's listed. Surnames: ROE, FUNK, WALKER, PUTERBAUGH,KREWSON,HUNTER, GORRELL http:// boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.wells/4617/mb.ashx Biographical Memoirs of Wells County, Indiana, 1903. pp.477-478 EZEKIEL ROE. It is generally considered by those in the habit of superficial thinking that the history of so called great mean only is worthy of preservation and that little merit exists among the masses to call forth the praises of the historian or the cheers and appreciation of mankind. A greater mistake was never made. No man is great in all things and very few are great in many things. Many by a lucky stroke achieves lasting fame, who before that had no reputation beyond the limits of their communities. It is not a history of the lucky stroke that is of the most benefit to humanity, but the long study and effort which made the lucky stroke possible. That which serves as a guide for the success of others is the preliminary work, the method, and it is that which should be praised and commended by the historian. Among those in this county whose success was achieved along steady lines of Acton is the subject of this memoir. Ezekiel Roe, one of the oldest and most prominent settlers of Jefferson township, was born in Fayette County, Ohio, May 3, 1823, his parents being Ezekiel and Elizabeth (Funk) Roe. The grandfather of the subject was a native of Ireland. The father and mother of the subject were both born in Pennsylvania, and there grew to maturity. Eventually they were married and walked to Indiana, where they lived for several years. Finally becoming tired of frontier life they returned to Fayette County, Ohio, and took up their residence. It was on this farm in Randolph county, Indiana, that the subject, Ezekiel Roe, was reared. The scenes of rural life became familiar to him, and it is small wonder that he followed the life to which he had been born. His education was received in the subscription school, which was held in an old log building, totally devoid of even the semblance of comfort. The seats were benches hewed from logs, unplanned and minus the backs; each student took care of his books, which consisted of a state, spelling book and arithmetic, by placing them on the bench beside him during the day and at night piling them up on the common desk around the wall. This common desk, or rather shelf, for it was no more than a shelf held to the wall by large pegs, was known to the students by the dignified name of "write's bench", and , armed with a quill pen and a copy book, each scholar laboriously fashioned the letters as the teacher dictated each day. Despite such disadvantages, young Ezekiel stored his brain with much useful knowledge, which served him well in after years. He worked on the farm until he was of age, and then was hired by his father for a year at seven dollars per month. After working for his father for a year, he began to hire himself taut to other farmers, receiving as a compensation for his labors the paltry sum of seven and nine dollars per month. Even with so small a salary, he was able to lay aside some money and in time invested his earnings in an eighty-acre tract of land, which he entered Union township, Wells County, Indiana, and which is now owned by John A. Walker. On the fourth of July, 1852, Mr. Roe was united in marriage with Miss Catherine Puterbaugh, a daughter of Jacob and Rebecca Puterbaugh, of Elkhart county, Indiana. Mrs. Roe was born in Elkhart county, her parents having moved from Darke county, Ohio, at an early date. The father died in Elkhart county and the mother and young daughter were left to face the world alone. The mother did not long survive her husband and at the age of six years Catherine was left an orphan. She was then taken by an older brother, who reared her. Her opportunities being limited, she was forced to neglect her education and at a tender age, just when other girls were being anxiously cared for by fond mothers, she went out into the world to make her way. This she did by working to the week, receiving but seventy-five cents per week, and was able even with so meager a compensation to eventually save thirty-two dollars by the time she was married. Shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Roe moved to a farm in the woods of Union township, where the young husband set to work to clear enough ground to enable him to make a living. In 1859 after he had succeeded in clearing his land until it was in good condition for cultivation, he sold his farm and bought one hundred and sixty acres of uncleared land one-half mile north of Ossian. This land he improved and here he reared his family until, one by one, the birds left the nest and now only the parents are left in the old home. Eight children, seven of whom are living, were born to them: Addison, died at the age of eighteen years; Andrew is a farmer in Jefferson township; Mary is the wife of J.S. Krewson; Maggie is the wife of Allison Bowman; Arthur F. is a farmer of Jefferson township; Anna is the wife of Joel Hunter; Ama is the wife of D.C. Gorrell, and Hampton is a merchant of Ossian, Indiana. Mr and Mrs Roe are members of the German Baptist Church and are active in church work. His entire life has been spent in active work and politics has for many years opened an avenue for this activity. The Democratic party has always profited by the subject's political efforts and he is counted by the party as one of it most faithful followers. Mr and Mrs Roe are among the best citizens of Jefferson township where they have resided most of their lives. They are a worthy couple and no fitter compliment can be paid them than that given by their neighbors, who join in bestowing upon them their highest praise. **************It's Tax Time! 2. Dwayne, I'm not surprised to learn of material that doesn't coincide with facts, since the books are written from collected materials and/or reminiscences of various family groups. They might be a place to start for someone beginning work on a branch of the family, backed up by research in public and/or private records. Since you are a thorough family historian, it's possible you may yet uncover some evidence regarding your Jacob Graff. I hope you do. 3. Dwayne: I wasn't clear as to my intentions. I was just trying to group some of the Graff families based on warrants (one piece of the puzzle, but far from conclusive). Any idea if your Christian Graff, is tied to the John & Christian Graff who had the Bethel Township, Blue Mountain 1739 warrant? Their warranting property next to George Beshore, who warranted his property in 1738 is intriguing. This was before George Beshore was baptized by Michael Frantz in 1746. Both properties were neighbors of Christopher Stump, who has no baptism record, but his 1743 naturalization record shows him listed with those who did not take the oath of allegiance. Also on the same list of "Quakers or such..." were two Jacob Graff's, Johannes Stump, and Peter Becker. (list from PA Archives) Bill Thomas -----Original Message----- From: brethren-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:brethren-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Dwayne Wrightsman Sent: Saturday, April 12, 2008 4:47 PM To: brethren@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BRE] Graff Info Bill, I have information that is missing from your analysis. My extended Graff family lived on Cocalico Creek in what is now East Cocalico Township, just east of what is now Ephrata, very close to Henry Mohler and Michael Frantz. Unfortunately, their land holdings do not show up in your sources because they lived on John White's huge holdings originally deeded 8 August 1687. The patriarch of my Graff family was Christian Graff (died 1748). After he died, his heirs (his widow and his children) deeded 140 acres to Henry Mohler on 13 May 1752 (Lancaster County., Deed Book S, pp. 28-30). This deed is invaluable because it names the widow and the surviving five children and their spouses. The oldest son Christian Graff (died 1748) was Jacob Graff (died 1776), and he is the one who was the father of my Jacob Graff who moved to North Carolina. The death dates of Christian (1748) and Jacob (1776) are from the Death Register of the Ephrata Society of Seventh-Day Baptists. I use Julius S. Sachse's account of the Death Registers published in the Pennsylvania Magazine of History, Vol. XIV, 1890, pp. 297-312, 387-402. The 1776 death of Jacob Graff is also based on his will (Lancaster County, Will Book C, Vol. 1, page 339). The extended Christian Graff family was very tight in terms of where they lived on Cocalico Creek just east of Ephrata, and also in terms of how they worshipped. Basically the whole family were members of the Ephrata Society. You have named in your message below those who were members in 1770. Members who died before 1770 are included in the Ephrata Death Register. In addition to the patriarch, Christian Graff (died 1748), there was the death of Jacob Graff's daughter, Priscam (died 20 February, 1749). She was mentioned in the Register as 28 years of age at her death and that she was the daughter of the aged Bro. Jacob Graff. The members you listed for 1770 are also included in the Death Register. My Jacob Graff seems to have moved out of Cocalico about 1760. He was not a known member of the Ephrata Society as were his parents and grandparents. I got the about 1760 date of departure from Cocalico from my microfilm of the Cocalico tax records for 1751-1808. 1759 was the last year that both he and his father appeared in the tax rolls. After that, there was only one Jacob Graff. My Jacob Graff/Groff/Grove shows up in Rowan County during the 1780s. He is listed with a group of known Brethren who were keeping guard at the Salisbury jail. He is listed as a member of the Ashe County Brethren community in Sappingtons Carolinas book. I suspect that he was Brethren due to his family being members at Ephrata. He may have been a member himself but was not around in 1770 for Morgan Edwards to record him. Then there is the matter of his children's names. They are the same as the names of his brothers and sisters and his nephews and nieces back in Cocalico. Someone is going to have to convince me that my logic is faulty before I would dare to tackle the multitude of Graffs/Groffs in Lancaster County. I have found a single tight-knit family that fits as well as can be expected and I am using documented evidence, except for one thing: I cannot yet prove that the Jacob Graff whose parents and grandparents were Ephrata members is the same Jacob Graff who ended up in North Carolina. So far I am using religion and children's naming patterns as my way of connecting the dots. I think you misinterpreted my previous message, and I am hopeful that this one might make things more clear. I have her parents possibly being Benjamin Grove (1772 Washington Co. VA - 6/4/1853 VA) and Hannah Swaggart 1/18/17? New Holland, Lancaster Co., PA - 7/15/1852 Highland, VA) I guess that there was a fire in Rockingham Co. Virginia that might have burned some of the county records to help follow the ancestry of Mary and Rudolph. Does anyone have any information on this family? 3. The family of Joseph Roland (son of Gaspar) is in the Winter 2006 issue of BRETHREN ROOTS, pp. 69-71. The John Dick family follows on pp. 71-74 of the same issue. Joseph Roland and John Dick were colleagues and Brethren leaders in Muhlenberg before heading up to Illinois in the late 1820s. Before that Roland worked with Hendricks at Drakes Creek. John Dick was probably not active until sometime after 1800. I have a copy of a letter written, April 2, 1869, by Isham Gibson to Abraham Harley Cassel telling Cassel that he (Gibson) was baptized in Tennessee in 1823 by John Dick. Gibson was ordained as elder three years later by Joseph Roland. Like many of the Kentucky Brethren, including the Rolands, the John Dick family had come from North Carolina. From the accounts in Isham Gibson's letters, both Roland and Dick were present in Tennessee although they apparently spent more of their time working in Kentucky where they lived. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Merle C Rummel" <cliff@rtkonline.com> To: <brethren@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 13, 2008 7:25 AM Subject: [BRE] Roland Family >I am asking many questions - as I work on these families for my Frontier > Brethren (Kentucky etc of c1800) Book > > One of the important Elders in the early Carolina-Kentucky area was > Gaspar/Caspar Roland (Rowland).
