I appreciate everything you are trying to do to preserve Brethren Heritage. If needed I will be willing to help index the book. I have a hard copy as well. Ron
Another clipping from Great-Grandpa's scrapbook. This is from the Flora, Indiana, newspaper for Saturday, August 19, 1916. (I think perhaps the paper was called the Flora Democrat; perhaps that's why the name is always cut off.) "AMOS FLORA, BROTHER OF FLORA LADY, DIES IN WESTERN HOWARD. "Amos Flora, one of the well known citizens of western Howard county, where he had resided almost continuously for 65 years, and a brother of Mrs W S Ewing of this city, died last Friday morning about four o'clock, following a three weeks' illness with kidney trouble. Although he had been complaining for a long while it was not until about three weeks previous to death that his condition became alarming. At that time, in company with his physician, Dr Lybrook of Young America, he visited a specialist at Indianapolis and his real trouble was diagnosed. He gradually grew worse until death came. "Amos Kendall Flora, son of Daniel and Elizabeth Flora, was born in Preble county, Ohio, October 6, 1848, which would make him at the time of his demise 67 years, 10 months and 5 days of age. When a babe his parents moved to western Howard county and ever since that time he had lived within its borders, dying on the same farm to which his father moved when he settled there. He grew to manhood in western Howard and in 1873 was united in marriage to Salome Fiant, with whom he lived a happy life and who still survives. The union was never blessed with birth. Several years ago, however, they took into their home and reared to manhood and womanhood a boy and a girl, who have become useful and well-to-do citizens. The girl, a child of Mrs Flora's niece, is now the wife of Charles Bowerman and resides on the Flora homestead, while the boy of yesteryear, Will (Flora) Williams, is now a resident of Chicago. Both of them paid a last tribute by attending the funeral. "Besides the widow and two foster children, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs W S Ewing, residing on South Center street, this city, and Mrs Joe Fisher, of Western Howard county; also by two brothers, Rev. John W Flora, of Howard county, and Howard Flora, of Chili, Indiana. "For over forty years he had been a member of the Old Order Brethren Church, in which faith he remained steadfast until the end. The funeral services were held at the residence, Sunday morning at ten o'clock, conducted by Rev Simon Morton, of Ohio. Interment was made in the Union cemetery." **************Need a new ride? from a newspaper clipping dated May 19, 1917, taken from the Flora, Indiana newspaper: "DAUGHTER OF MAN AFTER WHOM CITY WAS NAMED DIES AT A RIPE OLD AGE. "Just when nature's at its prettiest, when the trees, after months of barrenness are again clothed in a radiant, new foliage; when the birds, back again from a winter's sojourn... [25 lines of such general flowery prose here] "It was under such circumstances and in the midst of just these surroundings that the end came peacefully last Monday morning to Mrs Nancy Lesh Eikenberry, better known to our many readers as 'Aunt Nancy' Lesh, one of the pioneer residents of Flora, at her home on South Division street. Death was due to cancer of the stomach and came after a several months' illness. The funeral services were held at the Church of the Brethren Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Elder G B Heeter, of Burnettsville, assisted by Elder Ira Kreider, of the Bachelor Run church. Interment was made in the Moss cemetery, east of the city, where all of the family with the exception of one daughter, Mary Landis, now lie in quiet repose. "Nancy Flora, born November 29, 1833, on a farm where Flora now stands, was one of eight children that came to bless the home of John and Sarah Flora, the town getting its name from her father. She was at the time of death 83 years, 5 months and 15 days of age. "Her brothers and sisters were Abraham, John, David, Jonas and Jacob Flora; Mrs Henry Eikenberry and Mrs John Replogle, all of whom preceded her. During her early years there were Indians still camping on the Bachelor creek, north of town, the city was at that time unknown and most of Carroll county was a swamp and a wilderness. "On February 5, 1852, she was united in marriage to Christian Lesh, the ceremony being performed by Elder John Moyer, at that time in charge of the Bachelor Run Church of the Brethren, which has since been divided and of which the local church is a part. To this union nine children were born, five surviving as follows: John Lesh, of Nampa, Idaho; Mrs Sarah Myer, of east of Bringhurst; Mrs U W Blue and Frank Lesh of this city, and Harley Lesh of Chicago. The children who preceded her to the Great Beyond were Elizabeth, who died at the age of 4 years; Rebecca E, wife of Riley Montgomery; Mary, wife of Frank Landis; and Amanda, wife of Albert Niccum. The husband died July 29, 1883. Besides the above relatives 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great- grandchild also survive, making in all five generations. "Soon after marriage she oved to Howard county with her husband and immediately united with the Church of the Brethren, remaining for over 65 years one of the ardent members of the faith. At the time of death she held membership in the Flora church. "In March 1900 she was united in marriage to Henry Eikenberry, husband of her deceased sister, but he died during the following August and since that time she and her son Frank had been keeping house in this city. "She was a kind and affectionate mother, whose counsel will be missed by the children and whose exemplary life and character will ever be remembered as a shining monument to such a noble woman. Mrs Lesh enjoyed a unique distinction, one perhaps possessed by few in the state, some member of the family circle having been, for the last twelve consecutive years, a Carroll county official. At this time Ross Myer, a grandson, holds the office of county surveyor." **************Need a new ride? Check out the largest site for U.S. used car listings at AOL Autos. >From the Flora, Indiana, newspaper, about 1927: "'AUNT MARY' OVERHOLSER SUCCUMBS AT AGE OF 77 YEARS. "'Aunt Mary' Overholser, one of the aged and highly respect residents of the city, died at her home on South Center street, not far from the place of her birth, last Saturday. Her last illness was of a short duration. She had complained some during the past few weeks, the last nine days being more serious. However, she was quite reconciled to God's will and was ready to pass over to meet friends on the other shore whenever the call should come. With due consideration she had planned for some time her funeral services, the songs, the scripture and the manner. Funeral services were held at the Church of the Brethren Monday morning at 10 o'clock, being conducted by the pastor, Rev A P Musselman, assisted by Rev J G Stinebaugh, of Rossville. Interment was made in the Moss cemetery. "Mary Overholser, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Myer, was born in Monroe township, Carroll county, January 27, 1850, and was at her death 77 years years, 11 months and 24 days of age. She was one of seven children, being the only daughter. On December 8, 1867, she was married to Joel Overholser, who preceded her in death on June 22, 1915, almost 13 years ago. To this union were born three children: Samuel Gilford, who died at the age of 11 years; Cora Wise, of Flora, Indiana; and Susan Elizabeth Eaton, who died in the year 1919. There remain two brothers, William Myer, of near Bringhurst, and Samuel Myer, of Flora; also four grandchildren, J Paul and Verne Wise, Mary Fisher and Violet Eaton, and three great-grandchildren, besides other relatives and a large circle of friends. "She had during her life planned carefully for eternal things, for hers was the highest type of Christian life. Her great heart of love found not only God but mankind as well. Though unable to be quite active in the last part of her life, she kept in touch with a large circle of friends. She will be missed by many; for to the aged she was a cheerful counsellor, to the middle-aged and young she was a grand mother and the children loved to hear her words and know her deeds of loving kindness. She had been a member of the Church of the Brethren for many years and whenever possible was in her place in the worship. But while we miss her may we remember her desire to pass over and be with loved ones in a better land ---Life Eternal. "O, Carpenter of Nazareth, Builder of Life Divine, Who shapest man to God's own law, Thyself the fair design. Build us a tower of Christlike height, that we the land may view And see ___ Thee our noble task, Your E______ _____ to do." A small obituary apparently appeared in the Gospel Messenger, since it is glued to the same page of Great-Grandpa's scrapbook: "OVERHOLSER, Sister Mary, of Flora, Ind., died at her home January __ 1928, aged 77 years, 11 months and 24 days. She was one of the children of Samuel and Elizabeth Myer. On Dec 8 1867 she was married to Joel Overholser, who preceded her in death on June 23, 1915. To this union were born three children, but only one of these survives, Mrs Cora Wise of Flora, Ind. There also remain two brothers, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Found in Great-Grandpa's scrapbook, this clipping from the Flora, Indiana, newspaper for Saturday, October 27, 1923. This was printed as all one paragraph, so I took the liberty of breaking it up into more manageable chunks: "OBITUARY GEORGE BRUBAKER; DIED AT N.MANCHASTER "George Brubaker, youngest son of John and Mary Brubaker, was born in Preble county, Ohio, December 1, 1831; departed this life at North Manchester, Indiana, October 17, 1923, aged 91years, 10 months, and 16 days. In his family he had six half-brothers and four half-sisters, three full brothers and three full sisters. His father died April 8, 1846. On April 14, 1853, he was married to Susanna Eikenberry, to which union was born one daughter, Mary Elizabeth, January 13, 1854. Soon after his marriage, they with his mother and older brother and sister moved to western Howard county, Indiana, which was scarcely less than a wilderness. In this community he lived for seventy years. His wife died February 10, 1855, leaving him his little daughter, less than a year old. He made his home with his mother and sister until his marriage to Mary Hamilton, daughter of Elder Hiel Hamilton, June 3, 1860. To this union were born two daughters and three sons. Nancy Floretta and Eli Howard died in early childhood. Henry Martin grew to manhood, and with his family in 1895 moved to North Dakota, where he was killed by lightning August 28, 1921. Ida Augusta still lives with her parents. Ora George, after spending several years as a medical missionary in China, is now living near his parents in North Manchester. He was a conscientious active member of the church always willing in its support and anxious to see the work of the church prosper. He was more than eighty years old when his son, Dr O G Brubaker, was called to go to China, yet he said his son should go if it were the Lord's will. During his long service as a deacon he was often called to take a leading part in church affairs. He was active as a citizen, serving often on juries, superintendent of public roads, actively interested in whatever was for the better- ment of the community. He was especially interested in anything that would be a help for young people. As husband and father he made the home such that to leave it was a sorrow and to return to it was a joy. probably from the Flora, Indiana, newspaper about 1924.: "MRS ESTHER SINK DIES FOLLOWING A 2-YEARS' SICKNESS "Following an illness that had extended over a period of almost two years Mrs Esther Sink, widow of the late Esom Sink, died at the family home east of this city Thursday afternoon of last week at 4:30, death presumably being due to a stroke of paralysis, the second with which she had been afflicted. Just before the end came she had taken some medicine, administered by a daughter, Mrs Will Stouse, who resided with her. The latter had stepped from the room a minute, thinking the mother would again lay down. Hearing a noise she went back into the room and found that the parent had fallen to the floor, cutting quite a gas in her forehead, Death soon resulted. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at one o'clock at the home, conducted by Daniel Skiles of Rossville. Interment was made in the Musselman cemetery. "Esther Musselman, one of four children of David and Esther Musselman, was born on the old Musselman homestead, north of the city on Deer Creek, September 21 1847 and was at her demise 77 years 8 months and 20 days of age. All her life had been lived in Carroll county. On February 28, 1875, she was united in marriage to Esom Sink, who preceded her to the Great Beyond six years ago last February. To this union four children were born, all still living to revere her memory. They are David F, of near Burlington; Mrs John Moore, of near Cutler and Mrs William Stouse and John Sink of east of town. She is also survived by four grandchildren and a large host of friends. For 50 years or more she had been a member of the Old Brethren church." JT **************Need a new ride? Check out the largest site for U.S. used car listings at AOL Autos. Flora, Indiana, newspaper June 23, 1923: "SAMUEL MUSSELMAN DIES FROM MILITARY TUBERCULOSIS. "Samuel A Musselman, one of the best known and most highly respected residents of the city, passed away at 8:45 Wednesday morning at the family home on South Center street. Death was due to military tuberculosis and came after about four months' illness, although he had been complaining for almost a year. On May 23, in company with his wife, he went to Indianapolis, where he received treatment and on May 31st returned to his home, having since been confined to same and his condition gradually becoming worse until death came. Funeral services were held yesterday (Friday) afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Presbyterian church, conducted by Elder A G Crosswhite of Peru. Interment was made in Maple Lawn. "Samuel Asbury Musselman, one of six children of John and Hannah Musselman, was born on the old Musselman homestead about four miles north of Flora, and was the last of his father's family to survive. All his life had been spent in Carroll county. His death was likewise the first in his own family. Could he have lived until December 2 next he would have been 61 years of age. He was united in marriage on January 13, 1885, to Mattie E McCain. To this union, but one child, Glen, was born, who resides at Camden and together with the widow and one grandchild, Jewel Maxine, survives. Deceased moved to Flora from the farm in 1904 and for eighteen years had been one of its highly esteemed citizens. The past few years he had been employed as auto salesman, being connected for about two years with Blue & Lesh and the past year with Jackson Brothers & Company. In this capacity he had formed a wide acquaintance over Carroll county. Twenty-two years ago he united with the Lower Deer Creek Church of the Brethren and upon moving to this city for residence, transferred his membership to the local church, and had always remained a faithful follower of the faith. He was a good neighbor, kind and loving companion and father, his word was as good as his bond, and in his death the city once again is called upon to give up one of its useful and best liked men. Sparky, Your comments were thank you enough Sir. Actually I had a small group of volunteers who agreed to help and who have the keywords nearly completed. And an admirable job has been done by each and everyone of them. Thank you volunteers! We are almost finished and are contemplating what to do next. I agree with some of the comments that have recently been posted to the list about there being original copies of the book available. For what it is worth I agree with them - there is nothing like curling up with a physical book for an enjoyable afternoon. That being said when I am working on a project it sure does make it easier when it is in my computer. This is especially true when researching and/or writing an article. It just does not compare. Now if I can just figure out how to curl up with my computer.<grin> Since someone was kind enough to point out that the Brethren Heritage Center of Brookville, Ohio has a copy I urge my fellow list members to please purchase your Brethren books from them. They are doing a wonderful job in preserving our heritage and we need to support them in any manner we can. A yearly membership costs far less than a dinner for you and your significant other, and that $20.00 for a yearly membership will go a long way. Please visit their web site at http://www.brethrenheritagecenter.org/ and browse it. Getting back to the Some Who Led site. I did get a few reports back from people who had visited the site. Amazingly no one had any problems with accessing the site or with the speed that it was delivered to their computer. The amount of emails was fewer than I thought I would receive which in some ways is a small blessing - not having to respond to a multitude of emails. One I did get was extremely frustrating. A lady sent me a personal email, that to put it bluntly, ripped me a new posterior entrance. How dare I not allow her to download the images to her computer. And furthermore why did I have the unmitigated gall to place that copyright on each page. Oh well! You can please some of the people some of the time, and, well you know how the rest of it goes. Once again, your comments were thank you enough Sparky. Wayne Webb ----- Original Message ----- > Wayne, you are so generous, thank you so much. > I wish I knew how to help you. Is it hard? Was John S. Brubaker's son nicknamed "Happy"? I have a photo of a singing group at LaVerne College with Happy Brubaker in the group along with my Uncle Howard Hoff. Wayne, you are so generous, thank you so much. I wish I knew how to help you. Is it hard? I'm a computer moron, but if I can figure out how to help I sure will! Sparky Wayne Webb <SpiWebb@aol.com> wrote: Afternoon List, As part of my ongoing archival project of German Baptist church related material I have posted online a sample of one of the books in my collection. I offer it for your reading pleasure. There are no strings attached but I do offer these words of advice. You may have trouble printing it depending on your computer. I can not control this and offer no solutions to this problem. You will not be able to "right-click" the image and save it to your computer. There may be some other problems that I am not aware of - no warranty comes with the material. For those of you with dial-up modems you will likely have problems with the images in the film strip at the bottom of the page. I know I did when the site was created. Your web browser will likely time out and not paint all the images. In their stead will be just a place-holder. Clicking on the image still serves the same function - it takes you to that page. Those with a faster connection to the Internet should have no problems. How it would appear on a Web TV I do not know. Web site creation for that crowd offers difficulties. The book contains the biographies of a sampling of prominent, and some not so well-known, ministers and elders of the German Baptist church of the 19th and early 20th Century. The graphics were scanned individually and then the book in its entirety was typeset. It represents a lot ofd work on the part of myself so I do hope that you enjoy it. I am looking for a select few individuals willing to help me create keywords, such as shown on the pages. What is needed is the keywords from the individual pages to be typed into the block to the bottom right and then emailed to me. Let us see how many are willing to aid in this and how many just want the book with no effort on their part. Takers and no givers! This web site is a test bed to see how the technology works and how to set up an aesthetically appealing site. It, with several other works, will hopefully be the start of something that will attract attention so that others of it's kind can be worked on. I am looking for critiques on the page. Please do not send an email asking for a serarch engine. Yes, there is no search engine as you may have noticed. You need keywords to create a search engine plus the program that can eventually be obtained to create the search engine. As stated, a few readers can facilitate this by taking the time to email them. One person to take a range of pages and one or several others to take another range of pages and soon it would be done. Then a search engine program can be purchased to create one. The one thing needed is a Javascript routine to include a "next" & "previous" page button on each page. I do not know how to create such a script as I am not a programmer. To create each page and then include on it these buttons is very time consuming thus requiring a script to accomplish it. You try coding this many pages, and more, and soon you will see what I mean. If you go to the "Contents" page (pages 7 and 8) you will see an alphabetical listing of the biographies. They are all capable of being clicked with your mouse which will take you to that page. Furthermore, if you scroll using the film strip at the bottom to page 225 there is an index. You can clck on the number and it will take you to that page. My thanks to Mr. Dennis Roth for hosting this site for me. His willingness to step up to the plate is most welcome and admired. Please, no emails asking something that was already covered in this email. Read the email if you have any questions. And lastly. You may pass this email along to any mailing lists you would like to. However, please include the entirety of the email and not just the web site link. http://www.brethrennetwork.com/orwahist/books/001_some_who_led/ Wayne Webb Editor: Brethren Roots P.S. In my great-grandpa's scrapbook I find an obituary for John Brubaker. The newspaper's name is not given, nor is it dated; however, it is most likely from the Flora, Indiana, local newspaper. Brethren Encyclopedia says he was born 3/10/1854 and died 2/5/1912. Presumably this newspaper clipping is from 1912. "DEATH ELDER JOHN BRUBAKER IN CALIFORNIA; LIFE HISTORY "Elder John S Brubaker died at his home in Glendora, California, February 15th, after a three weeks' illness of heart trouble at the age of 58 years. Mr. Brubaker was born in Preble county, Ohio, but come [sic] with his parents to Ervin township, Howard county [Indiana] when four years old and resided there until 18 years ago, when he located in California. He was united in marriage January 18, 1877, to Elizabeth Brubaker, daughter of Mr and Mrs George Brubaker of Western Howard county. She died May 1st, 1879, leaving a small child which died soon after. On August 1st, 1880, he led to the altar Miss Emma Fisher of Flora [Indiana]. The Glendora paper pays the following tribute to his memory. He united with the Church of the Brethren when twenty-four years of age and entered the ministry four years later; since then his life being wholly consecrated to the cause of christianity and the welfare of his fellowmen. "Eighteen years ago he moved his family to California, for the past ten years residing in Glendora, where he has become immensely wealthy. He assisted in organizing the Brethren church in Glendora and became its first pastor. He was director of the First Savings Bank and also of the Glendora Light & Fuel Co., and an honored trustee of the Lordsburg college. He enjoyed the distinction and honor of being first and only mayor of Glendora. Besides enjoying the confidence of the people he has proven himself able, intelligent and broadminded in his views. "He leaves a wife and seven children, all of whom reside in Los Angeles county. They are Roy, Omer and Leland Brubaker, Mrs Laura Trostle and Mrs Lorie Detter and Vera and Veda, one child having preceded him to the great beyond. "The funeral services were held at 10 o'clock a.m., Wednesday, February 7, at the Glendora Brethren church conducted by Elder W F England, assisted by D L Miller. "The business houses were all closed as a mark of respect. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Banked about the casket they were typical of the purity of the life now stilled in death." I hope somebody on the list is following these Brubakers. My granddaughter recently married a Brubaker whose roots are in Virginia, and I'm trying to find a Brethren connection. Happy hunting.
