    1. Re: [BRE] Elizabeth Cripe Perkins Bechtelheimer Eckerle obituary
    2. In a message dated 4/26/2008 7:25:19 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, KTompk7744@aol.com writes: Undated newspaper clipping from the Flora, Indiana, newspaper. About 1923. Toward the end, Great-Grandpa glued another article so that it partly overlaps this obituary. "MRS ELIZABETH ECKERLE DIES TRITLE HOME, SOUTH BEND." "Elizabeth Eckerle, nee Cripe, daughter of Daniel C and Anna Cripe, was born at Pyrmont, Carroll county, Ind., November 15, 1848. There she spent her first twelve years of youth. Then the family removed to near Galveston, Cass county, Indiana, where she grew to young womanhood, and on May 21, 1865, she was united in marriage to Ephriam Perkins. "To this union, seven children were born, two boys, Clarkey and John, and five girls, Laura, Emma, Hettie, Tina and Lydia. The oldest of the girls preceded their father to the spirit world and Hettie and Clarkey passed away within the same year that their father died. The father's death occurred on January 22, 1880, and the youngest of the girls, Lydia, was born seven months later, so was never permitted to share her father's love and caresses. "Life's burdens are heavy at best and even when shared by another, so after four years of struggle to keep the home together, the widowed mother found another companion in Samuel Bechtelheimer, a minister in the Church of the Brethren, and came to live near Flora. To this union was born one child, a daughter, Nellie. On January 27, 1894, the home ties were again broken by the death of the husband and once more the widowed mother faced life's stern realities alone, without a companion. "For twenty-one years she shared life's joys and sorrows with a third companion, Leopold Eckerle, a deacon in the Flora Church of the Brethren, but in 1915 she was to experience another separation and sorrow by the death of father Eckerle. "Sunshine and shadows chased each other ever across the pathway of our departed and beloved sister, but through whatever experience she was made to pass she graced them all with her full and devoted christian fortitude and loyalty to her Lord. "When sixteen years of age she gave her heart to the Savior and with a steadfastness rarely equalled she served and sacrificed for the promotion of the worthiest and highest ideals of the Kingdom. Her place at worship was rarely vacant if she was at all able to be at the services. Her counsels were those of an earnest lover of the whole Gospel which she lived and sought to promote. Her last service was a Love Feast of the Church on Monday evening, before being stricken with paralysis on Friday. Four times in later life she received the anointing with oil and always received abundant blessing from the service. Her place no other can fill, but her example and ideals will live on long after she is absent from our sight. "For the last four years and a half she made her home with her daughter, Lydia Tritle. All that loving children could do was done in the effort to make mother's last days days of pleasantness and long the paths of ______ But despite every care and ___ aid she could not stay and______ Sunday, December 2, 1923, _____ passed to her reward from _________ home of Mr and Mrs Tritle, _____ South Bend, at the ripe age of 75 years and 15 days. 1. [BRE] Elizabeth Zook Barnard Maxwell Betts obit
    2. >From the Hoosier Democrat, Flora, Indiana, May 6, 1916, this obituary: "OLDEST CONTINUOUS RESIDENT OF MONROE DIES AT AGE OF 89 YEARS. "Mrs. Elizabeth Betts, who has perhaps lived in Monroe township longer than any other person, died at her home a mile northeast of the city last Saturday about 12 o'clock, the direct cause being a fall that she sustained at her home on March 21. She had been gradually going down from infirmities of old age for some time and the fall caused her to take to her bed, and the constitution was too weak to withstand this blow. Mrs Betts' death removes another of the pioneers of Carroll county and Monroe township. "She was 89 years old and had lived for 86 years in Monroe township, within a mile and a half of where she died, and was known to everybody in and near Flora, "Elizabeth Zook was born in Preble county, Ohio, in 1827. At the age of three years she came with her parents to Carroll county and entered the land that comprises the south-eastern part of Flora. They built a house where the John G Trent home stands. There were very few white people in Carroll county at that time, the residents for the most part being Indians and the land all being wilderness. The subject of this sketch saw all the improvements that have come to our county in bringing it up from its primeval state to its present condition of being among the most fertile land in the state. "On March 1, 1855, she was united in marriage to Abraham Barnard. Five children were born to this union. Two of these died in childhood and the only son, Jacob, died a few years ago. There are two surviving daughters, Mrs Sarah Burge of this city, and Miss Lucinda Barnard, who had never married and lived with the mother. The husband died in 1865 and in August 1869 she was again married to David Maxwell, who died the following January. "In November 1871, she was married to Nathaniel Betts, who lived until December, 1876. After his death she moved to the farm she owned at the time of her death and for the past 39 years had continued to live there. "The funeral was held at the Old Order Dunkard church of which she had been a member for many years, Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock by Elder John F Flora, her pastor, assisted by Rev. Joel Fisher, of Howard county. Interment was made in the Maple Lawn cemetery." **************Need a new ride? Check out the largest site for U.S. used car listings at AOL Autos. 2. >From Great-Grandpa's scrapbook, a clipping dated July 3, 1923, from the Flora, Indiana, newspaper: "MRS DANIEL STINEBAUGH, PROMINENT FLORA LADY, DIES "Malissa, daughter of James W and Martha Stonebraker, was born in Carroll county, Indiana, June 8th, 1850, and died at her home on South Center street, Flora, Indiana, Wednesday morning at the advanced age of 72 years, 7 months and 23 days. She grew to womanhood and married Daniel Stinebaugh, also of Carroll county, on March 1st, 1869. They were continuous residents of Carroll county all their married life except one year in Howard county, living in Clay township until 1892, when they moved to what was called Pikes Peak and from there in 1900 to their home on South Center street, in Flora. "Eight children, three sons and five daughters, were born to them while living in Clay township, four of whom died in infancy and are buried in the Pyrmont cemetery. Together they were baptized into the Church of the Brethren at Pyrmont in June, 1872 and had kept the faith and worshiped with them for more than fifty years. Mrs Stinebaugh enjoyed good health until they had celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary, March 1st, 1919, soon after which her health failed and she had been an invalid for more than a year. Sunday, January 28th she became overbalanced and fell to the kitchen floor, causing injuries which hastened her departure. She was a patient sufferer and having lived a devout Christian life and receiving the anointing according to James 5:14, was ready and awaiting the call of the Heavenly Home. "She is survived by the husband, two sons, Gilbert and Jerome, and two daughters, Mrs Henry Garrison and Mrs Frank Replogle, all of this vicinity; twelve grandchildren and three great- grandchildren; one sister, Mrs Julia Overholser, who has been caring for her, and two half brothers, P W Stonebraker of Burlington, and Noah Stonebraker of Wheatfield, and other relatives and friends. "Funeral services were held yesterday (Friday) at 10 o'clock at the Church of the Brethren, by Elders H C Early and Riley Montgomery. Interment in Maple Lawn cemetery." **************Need a new ride? 1. [BRE] undated obituary for Elizabeth Sheaffer Moore
    2. Also from Great-Grandpa's scrapbook, probably from the Adel, Iowa, newspaper: "AGED LADY DIED QUITE SUDDENLY. MRS. ELIZABETH MOORE PASSED AWAY AT HOME OF HER BROTHER ON TUESDAY MORNING. "Mrs Elizabeth Moore, an aged lady who has made her home with her brother, John S Sheaffer, for some time, passed away about 10:00 o'clock yesterday morning. Death was quite sudden and was due to the infirmities of age. "Mrs Moore has been poorly for a week or more, although her condition was not thought to be serious. When members of the family looked into her room to see how she was feeling it was found she had passed away and the doctor summoned stated that death had occurred about an hour previous, presumably from a heart attack. "Mrs Moore had been poorly [sic] for a and 25 days old. She was a sister of the late Mrs Anna Starr, who died at the home of Mr and Mrs O E Emmert on September 28th. She was able to attend the funeral of Mrs Starr but has failed rapidly since that time. "Funeral services were held at the Shaeffer home this afternoon and the body shipped to the old home at Lena, Illinois, where burial will be made." [I was hoping for a DOB and DOD, since I was very curious as to what constitutes an "Aged Lady."] JT **************Need a new ride? Check out the largest site for U.S. used car listings at AOL Autos. 1. [BRE] obituary for Anna Sheaffer Starr
    2. Probably from an Iowa newspaper (undated clipping), found in my great-grandfather's scrapbook, perhaps about 1929: "ILLINOIS LADY DIED AT EMMERT HOME. "MRS ANNA STARR PASSED AWAY SEPT 28 AT HOME OF MR & MRS O E EMMERT." "Mrs Anna Starr, aged aunt of Mrs. O E Emmert, passed away at the home of the latter last Saturday, September 28th. Mrs. Starr came here from Illinois several months ago for a visit, and her illness prevented the return trip to her home. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon and the body shipped to Lena, Illinois that night. "Anna Sheaffer, daughter of Marin and Leah Sheaffer, and wife of John Wesley Starr, was born January 14, 1856 [sic], in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania and died September 28, 1929 at Adel, Iowa, aged 78 years 8 months and 14 days. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died on August 10, 1926. "In the early sixties she came with her parents to Illinois, locating in West Point township of Stephenson Co., where nearly all of the rest of her life was spent. She was long a member of the Church of the Brethren and was always interested in her church and in the Christian faith. "Mrs Starr is survived by her only son, Frank B Starr, who with his wife and two daughters, Stella M and Mildred M, of Lena, Illinois, compose the immediate family. There are also one brother and two sisters, John S Shaeffer of Adel, Mrs Lizzie Moore of Adel, and Mrs Leah Forhney of Rasin, California." Note: I tried adding 1856 DOB and 78 years and couldn't make that work for 1929. So either she was born about 1850, or she was 73 y when she died. Something doesn't compute. 1. [BRE] obituary Sarah Isabel FLORA Ewing (1921)
    2. another from the scrapbook of newspaper clippings taken from the Flora, Indiana, Hoosier Democrat: "MRS SCOTT EWING, PROMINENT LADY OF CITY, PASSES AWAY. "Mrs. Scott Ewing, a resident of Flora the past several years and one of the well known ladies of the city, died at the family home on South Center street Monday afternoon, the immediate cause of her demise being hemorrhage of the brain. Her illness started with 'shingles' about six weeks ago. For about the past two weeks she had been bedfast. "Sarah Isabel Ewing, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Flora, was born in western Howard county, Indiana, March 17, 1853; departed this life August 8, 1921, aged 68 years 4 months and 21 days. "She was united in marriage with W S Ewing January 23, 1872, in Howard county, Indiana. This union was blessed with three children, all of whom with the devoted husband survive. They are Mrs. Lova Clingenpeel and Mrs Lula Moss, of this city, and Lon R., of Howard county. There are five living grandchildren and one who has passed away to the Great Beyond. There is also one great-grandchild, Margaret May Albaugh. Besides those mentioned there are two brothers, Elder John W Flora, of Howard county, and Howard L of Chili, Indiana, and one sister, Mrs. Joseph L Fisher, of Howard county. One brother and two sisters preceded her to the Spirit World. "Sister Ewing was a consistent, conscientious Christian woman, possessed of many virtues and was truly a 'mother in Israel.' She, with her companion united with the Church of the Brethren in the Bachelor Run church under the preaching of Elder Rosenberger in the year 1885 and remained faithful until her translation to her Heavenly home. Had she lived until next January they would have celebrated their Golden wedding, the Lord sparing the husband also. A happier couple and a more loving family would be hard to find. She will be missed in the home, in the church and especially in the Sisters' Aid Society and as a neighbor and friend, but our loss is her eternal gain. At her request her former pastor, A G Crosswhite, of Peru, assisted by her present pastor, I R Beery, of this city, anointed her with oil in the name of the Lord, according to James 5:14-15 to her great comfort and joy. "The funeral services were conducted from the Church of the Brethren on South Center street, near her home, Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock by Revs. Crosswhite and Beery. Interment was made in Maple Lawn cemetery." **************Need a new ride? Check out the largest site for U.S. used car listings at AOL Autos. (http://autos.aol.com/used?NCID=aolcmp00300000002851)

    3. Does anyone know if Jacob and Catherine (Bennett) Overholster (or Overholser) were the parents of this Catherine Overholser, born in Preble County Ohio in 1825? -----Original Message----- From: brethren-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:brethren-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of KTompk7744@aol.com Sent: Friday, April 25, 2008 2:56 PM To: dshow@sbcglobal.net Cc: brethren@rootsweb.com Subject: [BRE] Another Overholser found (Catherine Overholser Trent) >From the Flora, Indiana, Hoosier Democrat, Saturday May 15, 1913: "CATHERINE TRENT PASSES AWAY THE HOME OF HER SON." "Aunt 'Katy' Trent died at the home of her son, John G Trent on South Adams street last Friday morning at 6 o'clock from ailments incident to old age. For several years she had made her home with her children and during the past two years had been almost totally helpless at the home of her son John, whose family had given her every care possible to make as happy and comfortable as they could, her last earth's existence. But the time of her departure came, and she closed her eyes in the final sleep just at the dawn of a beautiful day. "Catherine Overholser was born in Preble county, Ohio, September 2, 1825. When a small girl the family moved to Carroll county and settled on the farm now owned by ELizabeth Betts, just northeast of Flora. The country was a wilderness then and Mrs Trent's early life was similar to that of other pioneers. She learned to spin the flax and wool and to make garments for the family's comfort from them. She also helped in the field and the music lessons learned were those from the throats of the many song birds. The piano of that day was the loom or the wash tub, the harmony of which made a lasting place in history of Carroll county. It is to these old settlers with their hardships that we younger people lift our hats, realizing as we do that only by the continued hardship and privation it is possible for us to enjoy a great degree of comfort and ease in the best spot on earth. "She was united in marriage to Jeremiah Trent July 18, 1844. To this union 7 children were born. They were Susan, William, Samuel, Thompson, John G., Mary and Sarah, all of whom have preceded her except John G Trent of Flora, and Sarah E Flora of Canada. The husband died November 9, 1892. She is also survived by two brothers, Joel Overholser of Flora and Levi Overholser of Lafayette. There are also 25 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and a host of distant relatives. She had been a faithful member of the Church of the Brethren for more than 65 years. The funeral was held at the church Sunday at 10:30, by Revs J G Stinebaugh and Riley Montgomery. 1. [BRE] Sarah Barnard FLORA Bower newspaper obituary
    2. >From Great-Grandpa's scrapbook, this clipping of an article that appeared in the Flora newspaper on Saturday, July 9, 1921: "'AUNT SARAH' BOWER DIES FOLLOWING EXTENDED ILLNESS. " Mrs David Bower, one of the highly respected ladies of Flora and a pioneer of this vicinity, died at her home on South Center Street last Monday night at 11 o'clock. Death was due to a complication of diseases, and came after a several years' ailment. She had been confined to her home for about the past three months, two of which she had been bedfast. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Church of the Brethren, conducted by the pastor, Rev I R Beery, assisted by Elders J G Stinebaugh and Riley Montgomery. Interment was in Maple Lawn cemetery. "The subject of this brief memoir ---Sarah Bower, nee Barnard--- was the daughter of Jonathan and Mollie Barnard and was born in Carroll county, Indiana, February 6, 1845. She lived and grew to womanhood on the Barnard homestead about a mile east of Flora. Her schooling was of the meager kind common to that day. There are at least five of her former schoolmates still residing in or near Flora. They are H D Eikenberry, Sarah Harter, Margaret Harter, John Callane and William Cline, the first four residents of Flora and the last named residing at the east edge of town. "On March 6, 1864, she was united in marriage to Elder Abraham J Flora, also of this county. To this union were born four children, one of which died in infancy. The other three are Elder Riley Flora of the Walnut Stump vicinity and Perry Flora and Mrs J J Stinebaugh, of near Flora. "In 1865 'Aunt Sarah' united with the Church of the Brethren and was, during the rest of her long life, a most consistent and helpful worker in all of the church's activities. After more than thirty years of labors, sorrows and joys together, the husband passed on to his reward. "On May 29, 1902, she remarried. This time David Bower became her companion and shared with her life's cares and toils until her death at the age of 76 years, 4 months and 28 days. On May 27, 1921, she was annointed with oil according to James 5:14-16. Up to the time of her last illness she was a regular attendant at Sunday school and the services of God's house. Not many months ago she completed eight years of perfect attendance at Sunday school and had received her Robert Raikes Diploma with seals according. An aged husband, the three children above mentioned, two step-children, Mrs. David Myer of east of town, and Frank Flora, of Peoria, Illinois; 3 grand- children and a host of friends are left to mourn her departure. "She sought sweet rest and a loving Father permitted her to enter into that rest. She needs none to eulogize her. Her life is its own eulogy. She was worthy of the confidence and respect of all. Her heart was fixed on God. She most devotedly lived her convictions of righteousness. She yearned for the salvation of her children. She loved and prayed for the success and spirituality of the church. Like a full sheaf of grain she has been garnered home and we bow to the will of Him who doeth all things well. "Her peace is sealed, her rest is sure Within that better home; While we weep and linger here, Then follow to the tomb." **************Need a new ride? 1. [BRE] Solomon Flora
    2. Another undated clipping from the scrapbook, presumably from the Flora, Indiana, newspaper, about 1913: "CURTAINS FALL ON EARTHLY CAREER SOLOMON FLORA "Solomon Flora died at the home of his son, Ezra, east of town Sunday from a general breakdown, which set in about six months ago at his home at Detroit, Fla., where he had moved his family about three years ago for future residence. Mr. Flora's physical condition had been breaking for several years, but it was not until last fall that a rapid decline set in. Last week it was realized that the end was near and he was brought back here, arriving on Thursday, and taken to the home of his son, where every care was given during the few remaining days. "The funeral was held at the home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by Elders Leedy and Musselman of the Deer Creek Old Order Church, assisted by Eld. Amos Flora, of Pete's Run church. Interment was made in the Moss cemetery. "Mr Flora was the oldest son of John H. and Anna Flora and was born on a farm near where he died, September 7, 1853. He was united in marriage with Hannah Catherine Reist, October 31, 1880. To this union 7 children were born, 6 of whom are living, and were present at the funeral, except Mrs. Ruth Peters of York, Pa. The other children are Reuben and Ezra of this locality and Clora, Carrie and Roy, who were still at the parental home at Detroit. Florida. "In 1882 he and his wife united with the Old Order German Baptist church, and he was called to the ministry a short time thereafter and had served in that capacity for about thirty years. Mr Flora was a man of advanced ideas, being far to the front in agricultural lines. It was largely through his efforts and perseverance that the swamp land east of town, that was a few years ago thought to be worthless, were turned and now is the most productive corn land in the county. "He saw great possibilities in Southern Florida and went there to work out his theories three years ago, and had his health not given away, it is not unlikely that he would have succeeded in demonstrating that there is a fortune in Florida for the man who uses scientific methods of farming. "He was a brother of Josiah Flora, of this place, Amos of east of Bringhurst, and Jonas R, of east of Camden. There are also two sisters, Mrs John Humberd of west of town and Mrs B S Hendrix of Guthrie, Oklahoma." Brethren Encyclopedia's ministerial lists volume gives Solomons dates as 9/7/1853 to 6/8/1913. An obituary for him appeared in the Vindicator in 1913, p 380. **************Need a new ride? Check out the largest site for U.S. used car listings at AOL Autos. 1. [BRE] Mrs Louis Frank Flora undated obituary
    2. Another clipping from Great-Grandpa David Bower's scrapbook, one with no relevant dates and not even parents for the deceased. This is probably from the Flora, Indiana, "Hoosier Democrat": "WIFE OF FORMER FLORA MAN DIES WEST PLAINS, MO. "Mrs. David Bower [Great-Grandpa's second wife, Sarah Barnard Flora] has received word of the death of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Frank Flora, which occurred at West Plains, Missouri, last Friday evening, death being the result of heart failure which attacked her while washing the supper dishes. She fell to the floor and was dead before her husband and son could get her on her bed. "The funeral and interment were at West Plains. Frank Flora, the bereft husband, is a son of the late Rev A J Flora and a brother to Mrs David Myer and Riley and Perry Flora. He left here about 18 years ago and met Miss Cli__fie Wise, who became his wife at Peoria, Ill, some two years later. They have resided in Illinois and Okla. till recently, when they moved to West Plains. One son, Frank, 13 years old, is left to share with the father in the great loss." 3. Many thanks to you, Wayne, for sharing this with us, and thanks, too, to the volunteers who were so willing to help! Computers have given us access to works that we would never have been able to view in the past, but the people who present them for us to enjoy are what really make it all possible. I'm going to look into the Brethren Heritage Center. Those who preserve our heritage deserve our support. I'm so sorry for the ripping, Wayne. I hope the gratitude that most of us feel will help to heal the damage. Are you able to wear the same ol' britches, or do we need to buy you some new ones? LOL!!! Kindest regards, Sparky Wayne Webb <SpiWebb@aol.com> wrote: Sparky, Actually I had a small group of volunteers who agreed to help and who have the keywords nearly completed. And an admirable job has been done by each and everyone of them. Thank you volunteers! We are almost finished and are contemplating what to do next. Since someone was kind enough to point out that the Brethren Heritage Center of Brookville, Ohio has a copy I urge my fellow list members to please purchase your Brethren books from them. They are doing a wonderful job in preserving our heritage and we need to support them in any manner we can. A yearly membership costs far less than a dinner for you and your significant other, and that $20.00 for a yearly membership will go a long way. Please visit their web site at http://www.brethrenheritagecenter.org/ and browse it. One I did get was extremely frustrating. A lady sent me a personal email, that to put it bluntly, ripped me a new posterior entrance. How dare I not allow her to download the images to her computer. And furthermore why did I have the unmitigated gall to place that copyright on each page. Oh well! You can please some of the people some of the time, and, well you know how the rest of it goes.
